« Heyman's Latest: Nady, Teixeira, Sherrill | Main | Rosenthal's Latest: Laird, Washburn, Nady, Bay »
4:32pm: More from Towers - he's had inquiries on Jake Peavy, Trevor Hoffman, Heath Bell, Kouzmanoff, and Greene. Potential deals will be assessed after the season, though Towers wants Hoffman to stay until the end of his career.
2:43pm: MLB.com's Corey Brock has the latest on the Padres and Greg Maddux.
Maddux apparently will only accept a trade to a West Coast team, preferably the Dodgers. Padres GM Kevin Towers doesn't mind trading within the division. The only piece missing is interest from L.A. They've got good pitching depth, but if Maddux could be added at a reasonable price, why not? The Professor has a 4.18 ERA this year.
Don't expect to see younger Padres like Kevin Kouzmanoff, Khalil Greene, or Josh Bard on the move. Towers said a trade of any of those three is "very doubtful."

I like Maddux but I like this deal only if he's cheap and can also show that he can hit for power. Then he'll really be filling a need.

I would think that the Dodgers would be willing to give up something like Ivan DeJesus Jr. and maybe another prospect.
DeJesus may not be much with the bat but he's definately ready defensively for the majors. He would give the Pads some insurance in case Khalil Greene continues his descent into suckdom, or gets traded. They seem to really be in need of a young shortstop so this could make sense.
I know that Chin Lung Hu would make more sense, but I doubt the Dodgers would want to give up Hu just to add Maddux. DeJesus is like a poor man's Hu, and if the Dodgers were willing to give up another prospect (Cody White? Delwyn Young?)

if you have to throw in an arm to get a power bat, then go for it...they may be able to get maddux to replace the arm.

Amazing pitcher and all..only thing i didnt like was that anybody could steal on him. He has such a slow delivery.

"if you have to throw in an arm to get a power bat, then go for it...they may be able to get maddux to replace the arm."
Any arm they give up to get a bat will likely be one that is a prospect.

"DeJesus is like a poor man's Hu, and if the Dodgers were willing to give up another prospect (Cody White? Delwyn Young?)"
Young alone is too much to give up for Maddux. Too much hitting potential and it would leave the outfield a bit light when you consider Jones' problems. De Jesus and White for Maddux and cash sounds right.

Hmm fair enough sounds like a deal.

If the padres have half a brain they would move maddux, hoffman, greene and peavy.
Maddux could be moved to the dodgers for delwynn young or maybe soeone like stultts.
If someone wants hoffman then move him! You might be able to get a coulple decent players. If texas can get what they got for gagne then the padres could get at least two good prospects.
If you can move greene then do it. This guy is bad!!!
Peavy would bring in a haul! You'd get more then a bedard trade. So one elite offensive prospect one A- pitching prospect and 2 other B- guys. The padres will not win next year and need to get some real players. This is really the only way.

"Peavy would bring in a haul! You'd get more then a bedard trade."
Peavy is better than Haren, so yeah he should bring in a lot. Still, trading a guy like that without bringing in a name in return will get Towers slaughtered.

If the Padres would in fact shop Peavy, what position needs would they want back in return?
Posted by: tmoney352 | July 23, 2008 at 06:37 PM
if the padres would shop peavy, they better get an entire farm system. - i'll take the Rays or the A's.
Peavy is an absolute stud.

"if the padres would shop peavy, they better get an entire farm system. - i'll take the Rays or the A's."
Peavy would require a Haren-type package with even more hitting potential.

Maddux would be great to kershaw...
Honeycutt has never inpressed me as a pitching coach.... Maybe he could teach kershaw how to throw a freaking slider....

Hmm I don't even think we should be discussing Jake Peavy.
He signed a pretty team friendly contract when you consider how good he is, so the odds are that rather than move him they try to build their rotation around him. It may not be the right thing to do, but unless some team comes along and offers something like Matt Kemp and Clay Kershaw plus more, I just dont see how they get equal value.

Peavy is signed till 2013

"Peavy is signed till 2013"
"Peavy would bring in a haul! You'd get more then a bedard trade. "
The Bedard trade would be meager compared to the Peavy trade. Few teams would actually have the prospects to make such a trade happen, and those that do would be cleaned out pretty deeply.

A Peavy trade is nearly impossible. How do you judge the value of a player who's undoubtedly worth more than stars that landed multiple top prospects? Do you just keep throwing more top prospects into the pot?
Posted by: scribbletone | July 24, 2008 at 11:29 AM
Well who would inquire on peavy? My guess yankes, mets, maybe angels and rangers. I think the rangers could pull it off with a salty, elvis, and mayberry. That's a lot but maybe throw in hurley. That sets the pads up real nice.
