« Rosenthal's Latest: Ibanez, Ohman, Fuentes | Main | Rays Scouting Jayson Werth »
According to Scott Miller of CBSSports.com, the Phillies had the Padres ask Greg Maddux if he would accept a trade there. Maddux told Padres GM Kevin Towers he would not. Towers continues to be limited to the West Coast as he tries to move Maddux's remaining $3.3MM salary.
Tom Krasovic says the Dodgers are the one plausible option, and they're not interested at this time. They should probably look into it though. The Giants could be buyers, but only with an eye on '09.

He would be smart enough not to go to one of, if not the, best hitters parks in baseball. Petco's been nice to him this season.

As a Mets fan I wish he would come, I would love to beat a Brave on the Phillies on the way to a division tittle.

The Giants are not interested in Mad Dog. You didn't make that suggestion, did you? That last line must've just been a condensed Giants post, because there's no room for Maddux in SF, unless he wants to sit on the bench and coach Mr. Zito.

Any chance Maddux would allow a trade to Milwaukee ? Brewers could use another arm in the rotation, and he may like to be reunited with his brother.
Then again, maybe he doesn't like his brother...

He'd be a pretty awesome guy to mentor their rotation (and I guess all the minor league arms in spring training).

I wouldn't be so sure that the Giants wouldn't want Maddux for one year for 2009. He'd be better than Correia out of the 5 spot, for a relatively low cost. As NJM says, he would be ideal to mentor the young guys on how to pitch rather than throw. He'd be a one-year bridge until either Lowry or a minor league pitcher is ready for the 5 spot in 2010. He pitches well in SF, in that park. And the Giants think they can compete in 2009 in a relatively weak division by simply adding a 3B with power.
I'm not sure adding a power-hitting 3B is enough by itself, but adding a Maddux at the 5 spot wouldn't hurt for a year.

Lowry's supposed to pitch off the mound in a couple weeks, so I guess I imagined him coming back next year to take that 4 spot (if Zito is 5).
That said, I'd rather have Maddux in the 4 or 5 -- even more so if he'd replace Correia. I just don't think the Giants will spend money on a luxury move like that, especially as Lincecum and Sanchez don't seem like pitchers formed in the Maddux mold. Maybe Cain would benefit most from working with him. I don't know. I just don't see it. They need a big bat. Just as they did when they made the Zito signing.
