Manny To Dodgers, Bay To Red Sox

4:05pm: Peter Abraham says Manny's team options were removed and he has agreed to decline arbitration.

3:58pm: Let's sort through this wild trade.

  • For 1.3 years of Bay, the Pirates receive LaRoche, Morris, Hansen, and Moss.  Moss becomes the regular left fielder, LaRoche takes over at third until Pedro Alvarez is ready.  When that happens, they might have a good problem on their hands.  Future Pirates' outfield: Moss, McCutchen, McLouth.  The pitchers are a couple of live arms at this point.
  • The Red Sox might be downgrading a bit with Bay replacing Manny, but they get Bay next year for just $7.5MM.
  • The Dodgers will have Manny play every day.  That leaves Juan Pierre, Andruw Jones, Andre Ethier, and Matt Kemp splitting two outfield spots.  Not ideal, but they didn't give up a ton to get Ramirez.  One question - can they get Manny to agree to decline an offer of arbitration so they can net draft picks?

3:39pm: Bob Nightengale has the Bucs getting Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss from the Red Sox and Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris from the Dodgers, correcting what looks like a typo in the Rosenthal report.

3:37pm: Rosenthal has details:

Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is headed to the Red Sox. The Pirates will receive Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Damien Moss and releiver Craig Hansen from the Red Sox.

He adds that the Red Sox will pay the $7MM remaining on Manny's contract.

3:30pm: According to SI.com's Jon HeymanJack Curry agrees.

I agree with purple, personally I don't see what all the hatred is about towards Pierre. He has a few holes in his game, but he's a solid player.

The problem is that Colletti paid too much for him. That's not Pierre's fault, it's Ned's fault.

Ok, sorry i was in rush spelling(pittsburgh)and Hanson just sucked playing for the sox but maybe he will be the #1 go to guy on the pirates. That's all i meant to say. sorry for the problems BucSox.

"So let's face it, odds are Jones will still be an everyday player with Manny in the lineup and Pierre and Ethier, two players absolutely superior to Jones right now will get the shaft. Torre needs to get a pair of brass ones, bench Jones and make sure Ethier plays everyday."

That has actually already happened. Torre had gone to Pierre/Kemp/Ethier for RHP and Pierre/Jones/Kemp for LHP, which made sense given Ethier's un-Ethier-like struggles with LHP this year. I don't think they DFA Jones, at least not till Young is healthy, but he won't be an everyday player.

Hey Pedroia no prob I just hate seein people get ripped on for stupid stuff like spelling and I know how you feel about Hanson I'm a big Red Sox fan too and with our sad bullpen he is likely gonna be the closer.

JJyankeesfan, Im sorry that you had to resort to petty insults and saying "I wont bother to respond" because you dont have a good response. Typical Yankee arrogance. Please do keep talking about history, We can continue to bask in the sucess of our franchise and if pretending to be an alzheimers patient and living your life in the 90's is what gets you through the day, thats fine by me.

I'm reading most of these comment on the trade, and some of them just make me laugh.

My beloved DODGERS, came out with a win on this trade by dishing out two young players, one(LaRoche) who is hasn't proven to be anything special in the minors or the pros. And we get a HOF'er for the rest of the season and 2 picks after. The only problem is how many OF'ers we have. Since Ramirez is free we can now waive Jones, and platoon Ethier and Pierre. Furcal shood be back in a month, and Penny shood return on Fri. vs. the Giants. I don't see how we are not in talks for the world series now.

The Sox, and Bucs, both got good outta the deal also. Bucs with a slue of prospects, and Sox with and out fielder with more HR's than Ramirez this year a better attitude and MUCH better defense for this year and next.

Everyone shood be pretty stoked.

BucSox, thanks for finding my spelling mistake. I don't think that hanson would be the closer know but if he worked on his location and pitches, maybe he could be a future closer or set up man. it's just he get's the bases loaded and walks in one or two men i mean come on. i think that a good offseason or a little time in the minors will help hansen alot.

I'm thinkin the Dodgers line up shood look like this.

1-Pierre-LF
2-Kemp-CF
3-Martin-C
4-Ramirez-RF
5-Kent-2B
6-Loney-1B
7-Blake-3B
8-Berroa-SS
9-Pitcher

With Ethier platooning, when he plays Kemp cood hit Leadoff and Ethier 2nd.

Is that stacked or what. especially when Nomar is back in less than a week.

This is totally random, but who thinks Andy LaRoche will play better playing across the diamond from his brother Adam.

"Ok, sorry i was in rush spelling(pittsburgh)and Hanson just sucked playing for the sox but maybe he will be the #1 go to guy on the pirates. That's all i meant to say. sorry for the problems BucSox. "

So you were also rushing while creating your username? LOL

No. That's not stacked.

"stacked" might be an exaggeration. if furcal comes back...and torre starts favoring ethier over pierre...and nomar starts playing 2b when kent comes back, that would be stacked:

SS Furcal
CF Kemp
C Martin
LF Ramirez
1B Loney
2B Garciaparra
3B Blake
RF Ethier

i'm really curious though...is manny on a jet back to LAX as we speak to get the start tonight?

*instead of kent when he gets off the DL

Last I heard of Garciaparra playing 2nd is when NYY tossed it around before LA signed him. At any rate, what Kent needs with his back, etc, is 2, possibly 3 days off a week instead of his current 1.

@ the guy that said Andy Laroche hadn't proved anything in the minors or majors... I'm pretty sure I've read he's had three 900+ OPS seasons in the minors,no?

I like this trade for the Buccos ... 3 guys (granted, all big losses for the current ML team) netted them 8 prospects ... three relievers, two starters, two OFs, and a 3B. I'd call Laroche and Tabata 5-star potential...the rest of the guys who knows but its obviously a little lower ceiling.

Overall, I think the bucs got at least 5 future ML players for 3 guys (2 of which they had zero intention of re-signing).

Why Bay?? couldnt the Sox have tried to land Holliday if they were gonna give up so much? or am I wrong to think of Holliday as a far more superior player?

one thing is for shore: the dodgers are going to have a stacked bench, which in the NL is worth something.

I have a great question.

Will Torre make Manny cut his hair???

Holliday is somewhat better than Bay...and a year younger...but when does his contract end? And what about his numbers outside Coors? Plus, Bay's bat should play well @ Fenway.

ChicagoBucco, not to refute for the sake of refuting but Holliday would have been just as good as Bay, maybe better, at Fenway. He would definitely have cost more.

Uhh yea that is stacked, And Kent is good in the 5 slot, u might not see it in his # but he is a vet. at moving runners over, gettin the ball in the air when he needs to the little things, that helps wins games, I jus can't see Nomer playing 2nd more likely Blake, or when furcals back Blake, and Nomarr can platoon. Either way having too much talent are always good prollems to have.

We needs to sweep the D-Backs which puts me in a dilemma.lol I have a tryout for the D-Backs coming up and I'm a die hard dodgers fan.lol who do I root for? I think even if the D-Backs sign me ill still be a dodgers fan.

i can't believe no one's pointed this out

Nomar and Manny are back on the same team. What is this the 2002 Red Sox

"i'm really curious though...is manny on a jet back to LAX as we speak to get the start tonight?"

I doubt that will happen, though I am going to the game so it would be a nice surprise.

"And Kent is good in the 5 slot, u might not see it in his # but he is a vet. at moving runners over, gettin the ball in the air when he needs to the little things, that helps wins games"

Calm down.

That said, you are right about Kent's hitting not translating to numbers. Kent has been scorching the ball for weeks now and hasn't had much to show for it.

"Will Torre make Manny cut his hair???"

I think not. Even Beimel's "hair cut" wasn't much of anything. Ethier's hair is actually longer and DeWitt was growing his. Perhaps a counter-trend?

"Why Bay?? couldnt the Sox have tried to land Holliday if they were gonna give up so much? or am I wrong to think of Holliday as a far more superior player?"

Bay played half the games in his career in a pitcher's park. Holliday has played half the games in his career in a hitter's park. Holliday's numbers away from Coors pale in comparison to those of Bay, which are fairly even home/road. In fact, Holliday's ex-Coors OPS is under .800.

Who is better now?

BTW, any bets on who the Dodgers dump from the 25 man? Good money is on Sweeney, outside shot on a DFA bath on Jones.

Lol yankees2727, just a matter of time until they make a waiver trade for Pedro.

Say what u want I believe the Dodgers will be in the world series this year. Wait and see. We now have Pitching and Power.

OMG. I'm in this other chat, and this guys goes SUPER crazy overone of my comments. Like seriously its chill to blog about sports but, come on now low life. I'm actually and MLB bound prospect while your prolly and over weight fat 40 guy infront of his CPU with stains on his shirts. get a life arguing on the CPU is soo petti and that comin from a 19 year old.

Manny, Nomar, Derek Lowe I believe Bill Mueller works in the organization.

"So you were also rushing while creating your username? LOL

Posted by: UConnHuskies | July 31, 2008 at 06:16 PM "

Outstanding, though the LOL almost ruined it.

No what ruined it is I'm pretty sure he was talking about me but he used it in the wrong context as he was actually quoting the other guy but a lot of people have dyslexia.

BleedDodgerBlu27 just deepens the hole he has dug for himself.

Look. We are all seriously impressed with you being major league bound. As a prized prospect you must have special insight into how the Dodgers are going from 500 team to a club that is going to be in the running for the WS.

You are pinning your hopes on a mediocre 3B in Casey Blake, an injury prone Nomar, and a guy that they had to kick out of Boston. Now, Manny is absolutely one of the best hitters in the game, when he tries. It has yet to be seen how playing in a pitchers haven like Dodger Stadium, coupled with his recent attitude issues will impact his performance.

The Dodgers may not win the suckiest division in baseball. Why in the world would you assume that they should be taken seriously when it comes to playoff discussions?

I do like the move for the Dodgers. Just am not convinced that they were one piece from putting together a contending team.

BTW - just so you know - pulling out the "mlb bound" status doesn't impress anyone. You realize this is an anonymous web page right?

Are you insinuating someone might lie on the internet???

No way...I don't believe that for a second.

Bj watevs, Who are you???

For one I no this is an anonymous site I need not to impress anyone. I was just stating that u must not have a life if u have the time and effort to take sumthin sumone says that seriously.

If I wanted to impress I wood of stated my name and the signing bonus I'm lookin at. But I'm not that type of player nor man, the fact that I'm an athlete has nothin to do with what kind of man I am

But n e ways, we have the 2nd lowest ERA in the MLB and we are 16-9 in july. we been improving over the past two months and now with blake who is 7-17, and ramirez we do have a shot at the series. We have had by far the worst injury prollems in the league and we still will be in the playoffs, blame in on our division but once your in the playoffs its a whole new season.

Wait a second Dodgers fans. I don't even think this puts you in the playoffs. Theres a team called the Dimondbacks in first. They might not have much hitting but neither do you. What the dodgers needed was pitching (nevermind the recent shut outs). They didnt get anybody. The dimondbacks have a really good rotation and with Rouch now being their 7/8 guy they got a nice bullpen. watch out for the Rockies they are not dead yet.

"If I wanted to impress I wood of stated my name and the signing bonus I'm lookin at. But I'm not that type of player nor man, the fact that I'm an athlete has nothin to do with what kind of man I am"

Technically you are that kinda man if breaking out that speech... but I digress, online people are only known by the names they give, the personalities they invent, and the words they use and the ultimately point comes to this: No one really cares who we are individually... but I digress again, now onto critiquing the Dodgers.

The Dodgers made a move that was exactly what they needed, a power hitter, even one on the decline. In the weak NL West, it could be the move that wins the division, especially if the D-Backs fail to wake up. On the other hand Manny in left, Blake at third, and Garciaparra supposedly taking over at short (at least part time) and you have defensively liable team. Defense tends to be a huge key to winning the big one... just ask the 2006 Tigers. The other big problem is the belief that since Jones is paid like a superstar he should be regularly in the lineup... I'm half surprised no one in LA has taken a lead pipe to his knee. Right now, I'd say the Dodgers are favorites in the NL West, but I'd bet on the Cubbies, Phillies, Mets, and Brewers ahead of the Dodgers in taking the National League. And if they make it to the series, I'd take all the American League leaders over the Dodgers.

Wuttup Yankfan1.

Who's your weed man. He must of hookd u up with the good stuff to have you talking like that. We don't need pitching we have the 2nd lowest ERA in the MLB and Pennny is coming back next friday. We do have bats Ramirez and Blake with more than solve or hitting wohws. Since mattingly came in as hitting coaxh after the all star break of hitting has enhanced drastically.

We had our AAA team playing ball for us with our injuries for close to two months, and the D-Backs still couldn't run away with the division now that we r sumwhat healthy we are 1 game back if we beat em tonite we'll be even. The D-Backs are don't they can't win the division with ramero play RF for them.

And the Rockies seriously, I don't believe you the rockies still havnt recoverd from the Red Sox whooping, Jus worry about your STANKEES making the playoffs becuase the Dodgers are a lock.

Purple dude or watevs your name is.

I am technically that guy by breaking out that speech???? How please explain, where is your logic that sounds just as stupid as you baseball analysis.

I don't care who you guys think I am, or if you doubt that I'm a prospect, I need to prove nothing to you. I proved myself already that what got me where I'm at. You can dream about being a baseball analysis or a pro baseball player but I'm living it.

Lol. you are sad...

BleedDodgerBlu; If you are in fact a prospect good for you, but the fact you have a tryout for the D'backs tells me what your signing bonus will be, zero. If you were drafted then you would be getting a signing bonus. Only international free agents get signing bonuses of any consequence. You might be lucky to net a couple Happy Meals at Micky D's.

I really do hope your a baseball prospect because those writing skills aren't going to take you too far in life.

"I don't care who you guys think I am, or if you doubt that I'm a prospect, I need to prove nothing to you. I proved myself already that what got me where I'm at. You can dream about being a baseball analysis or a pro baseball player but I'm living it.

Lol. you are sad..."

MAN, this is gonna sound so much worse when you're 25..

As for the Manny trade, I can't see how a Dodger fan could complain. Yeah, maybe the defense will suffer, but this trade has so many benefits for LA that it's a no brainer to me. First off, they get to bench Pierre and Jones. Or at least they should. They're done with them, waste of money, whatever. Second, he's perfect for them. A masher in the middle of the order who can take deep counts and he's one of the clutchest players in recent memory. Third, look at what you paid. You guys gave up Andy LaRoche, who seemed destined to spend the rest of this year in AAA before getting dealt during the offseason, and Morris, a good prospect but nothing that wouldn't give up for something nice. In return you landed an elite bat, the kind of impact guy that can change a season. Now obviously I'm not saying that Manny is going to come and save the Dodgers, but really I don't see how the Dodgers could've made a better deal. Coletti may be an idiot but this is a stroke of genius.

And also, anyone who thinks the D-Backs are out of this is so freaking nuts that I can't even comprehend. Do you realize how good Brandon Webb and Dan Haren are? With those two in the rotation, a pretty good bullpen and a solid lineup, you just can't count out the D-Backs. I mean, they've tried the whole two big time aces thing before, with some guys named Johnson and Schilling (I think one of them might still be there and pitching pretty well), and it worked out. They've got some streaky hitters in young guys like Upton, Reynolds, Young and Drew, but when they're hot, the Diamondbacks are a very, very good team.

to the guy who asked about my signing bonus, I was tryin to tell u the agreement I have with team A but the site blocked it saying.

"We're sorry, your comment has not been published because TypePad's antispam filter has flagged it as potential comment spam. It has been held for review by the blog's author"

But yea, imma get more than happy meal money, as a bonus. The worst part is goin to a rival of my fav team.lol that'l have to change tho.

I'm done. seriously. I can't believe how many haters, and how much negativity is out there and for no reason.

I wood think sum ppl wood be happy for a young black male to make it out one of the worst neighborhoods in Los Angeles, To be doin sumthin positive instead of selling drugs, or gangbangin.

U can't say I won't make it ill be sayin the same thing when I'm 25, or that I'm illiterate and can't write say what you want doubt me, because no one except my mom ever believed in me I'm used to it. its jus more ppl to prove wrong.

HAVE A NICE LIFE.

Jeez this site is getting really personal

getting? I don't think there's a day that goes by without some flame war... notably they happen more with guru around... but yeah, today's seems to chocked full a little extra bit of the crazy.

I think it's a little sad and awkward to say it but I think there can be no doubt that the problem is there are far too many "fans". I don't mean fans of baseball, obviously anyone who goes to this site is. I mean the guys that come on here and every single thing they say relates only to the team they root for, and is blatantly and clearly biased towards that team. It's happening more and more often, and it begins to ruin potentially intellectual baseball discussions. See, these fans get really angry and take it personal when you say something negative about what they say, because they take it somehow as an insult to their team or whatever. I just wanna talk baseball and analyze stuff and talk about potential trades and whatever. I don't wanna talk about how great the Cubs or the Orioles or the Angels are, or how they're a lock to win the pennant for some reasons that undoubtly cant be logically backed up. The end.

scribble, you got a point, but every fan for every team is biased in one way or another. It ranges from the fan who reads a team blog and starts arguing a B prospect is the second coming of Bob Gibson or Ted Williams to the fan who will defend a GM's move virtually regardless. I do agree that extreme bias is annoying. I'm a Red Sox fan and honestly for me one of the most annoying things is listening to some frat boy who's lived in Boston for 2 years saying he's a lifelong fan but can't tell me who Tony Conigliaro is or the significance of the phrase "Bucky f---ing Dent." Mostly these guys would say something stupid like package Jed Lowrie and Chris Carter for CC. All you can really do, stop listening.

Scribbs and Purp.

Yall both got a point, with me I just simply love baseball, I love playing it, I love watching it, I love talking about it. And a lot of people don't no about the game of baseball they jus no about a baseball game, if that makes any sense, as the name says I bleed dodger blue cuz I am from L.A. I start Liking Bo. Sox in 2000 for the fact they are underdogs fell in love with their tradition, Carlton Fisk, The infamous trade, Ted, Wade and learn to hate Bucky "F----n" Dent and to hate the Stankees, I'm not gonna say imma a die hard sox fan, I Love the Dodgers I like the R. Sox, and I hate every other team, but most of all I love the game. But I will be the first to admit fact about my team even if they are flaw, like Coletti is one of the worst GMs in the league, and we r garbage at signing free agent, and the as much as I hate to say the angels practically own us. Before we argue about petti things jus remember why we are on this site. becuase we love BASEBALL.

Perfectly put Scribble. Let's just talk some baseball.

You all suck, and your parents hate you.

man, I missed a lot here; and it looks as though I'm glad I did.

ummm what the hell happened in here? i leave for a couple of hours and when i come back everyone is trying to kill everyone, and surprisingly enough its not me everyone wants to kill for once...

i think this board should be shut off about now

BleedDodgerBlu-

Damn. Everyone beat me to the jokes...and they were funny too! (bjsguess, Nixa, scribble...props all around)

Don't get too worked up though, man. You just reek of youth and naivety is all.

Good luck at your tryout. Seriously....good luck! Bustin' stones is one thing, but you got a dream and you're doin' what you gotta do to get there. It's admirable. Just keep the ego in check, 'cause it's a long way to the bigs. Remember...even that fat guy at his CPU probably had big dreams at 19; may have even had a tryout, himself. You start thinking you're better than other people, you might be the one who winds up with stains on his shirt, typing bitter messages and screaming at his Mom to make him a sandwich.

Do you think that Manny will have to cut his hair?

Why do people think the Red Sox want Jack Wilson whatsoever. Don't the Red Sox have Julio Lugo to stink it up?

Lowrie for Wilson would be a major loss for the Red Sox. Wilson is all glove no bat, Lowrie has been a better hitter and he hasn't even played a whole season. Lowrie isn't the second coming of DJ, but his ceiling is much higher than wilsons. It is safe to say that Wilson has reached his peak, and what a foothill it was.

What is more likely to happen is this...if the Red Sox feel the need for a defensive SS utility player they will get someone for next to nothing. Someone like I dont know maybe Omar Vizquel. Something tells me the Giants would sell him off for a no name prospect. That is no dis respect to Visquel who is one of my favorite SS, but his age makes him cheap.
