In a long-awaited move, the Mariners released first baseman Richie Sexson today. They'll eat about $6MM in salary for the rest of the year.
Sexson, 33, is hitting .218/.315/.381 in 292 plate appearances this year. Perhaps someone could pick him up as a lefty-masher; he's fared well against them this year (not so much in 2006-07 though).

I'd love to see the Mets get Sexson... platoon him with Delgado..
Sexson this year against LHPs: 61 ABs, 5 HRs 12 RBIs and a 1.046 OPS. I hope the Mets are all over him and get him to platoon with Carlos.

A Delgado platoon partner would be a waste of a roster spot. He's been coming around the past few weeks.

Sexson could be a good righty bat off the Dodger bench.

Sexson to the Indians? DH or platoon him with Garko against lefties.

How about a return to the desert? Maybe a change in scenery will wake Sexson up.You can platoon Sexson at first with Tracy while moving Jackson to left. Or, move Tracy to right to replace Upton.

Gotta agree with the Indians going after Sexson. Indians need all the help they can get offensively, and even though Sexson may not provide much there is always hope of a turnaround.

I definitely agree with Grimace. Indians can use him against lefties. He is still capable of hitting 25 home runs, and with Garko struggling, what other choice do they have? 6 home runs is no production from first base.

They already fired the GM and manager. Sexon is released. Bedard is on the DL, again. Not good in Ms land.

How 'bout the Indians don't sign Sexson, cut Garko, and get a real first baseman?
Posted by: Krambo42 | July 10, 2008 at 02:17 PM
how about the braves signing him? could use his bat coming from the bench..or even maybe sign him to trade teixeira for a pitcher and left fielder?

krambo42..
would u guys want teixeira and lillibridge for carmona and francisco?

Any suggestions that aren't blatantly stupid for 1B krambo? Garko isn't even at arbitration yet so now way he gets cut and as for Sexson it would only cost the Indians the league minimum to sign him. On top of that if memory serves he isn't that shabby of a 1B with the glove either.

ANSWER FOR da510:
I would make that trade in a heartbeat

I hate to be the guy who brings up the Yankees when any known player gets released, but how about Sexson to the Bronx? Basically, he'd fill the role Shelley Duncan was expected to fill at the beginning of the season. Righty power bat off the bench; no speed; low average; decent at first base and can play corner outfield if ABSOLUTELY must (though not recommended by any means). We all know the Yanks will always be in buy mode when the opportunity arises. Their bench is pretty awful, as is their hitting against lefties. If everyone's healthy, I see Sexson occasionally getting a start against a lefty, with one of Abreu, Matsui, Damon, Giambi, or even Melky getting a rest. Sexson would play first or DH (which could also give Giambi the oh-so-needed DH day here and there), as their usual DH (Matsui) can handle the outfield if needed. Just my worthless 2 cents.

I am confused as to how the Mariners can justify keeping Vidro and getting rid of Sexson. At least Sexson hit against lefties. Vidro is terrible. Got to be the worst run team.

I think indians would be stupid to make that deal but as a braves fan i would do that now

sexson doesnt help the yankees, steinbrenner would never allow it, he would override cashman again if he considered it. the yankees should be making the move to a acquire teixiera and get a negotiation window, move giambi to the dh spot and pray they can somehow pass the sox and rays in august

I wonder if Pat Gillick would consider bringing in Sexson to replace So Taguchi off the bench. Manuel was around the Indians organization when he came up, maybe he could get him going again. Manuel said he wants another bat, and there's not much risk in taking a chance...

the yanks should try to get some starting help before hitting, hitting has never been a yankee weakness, no more home run hitters are needed. Harang should be on the radar or bedard or something like that

Grimace - Sexson is equivalent to a potted plant at first base. Just horrible defensively.
Posted by: Logger | July 10, 2008 at 03:43 PM
DB - great minds think alike...
He used to be a Masher. He also used to be an OF - could he be much worse than Taguchi for an inning if they needed him as a PH against a lefty?
I think if the pressure of the big contract is off and he seees that park in philly we might get a bargain and the righty hitter we need off the bench...

Royals should sign Big Sexy he'd be a great upgrade over Gload

04Forever-
Both guys you mentioned, Harang & Bedard, are injured.

Question-
If someone signs Sexy, are the Ms on the hook for the full remainder of his contract?
Or is there something in the collective bargaining agreement that caps how much a released-then-signed player is owed by the team who released him?
