Mariners beat writer Geoff Baker has a new blog post up this morning about the team's trade candidates. In a well thought-out piece, Baker names Arthur Rhodes, Erik Bedard, Jarrod Washburn, Raul Ibanez, and Adrian Beltre as the most likely to go (in that order). A few highlights from the post:
- Solid lefty relievers are available - mainly Brian Fuentes and Damaso Marte. But the price is reportedly high for both, leaving the 38 year-old Rhodes as a fine alternative. Plus, the '08 Mariners can live without him.
- Baker indicates that both Bedard and the Mariners favor a trade. However, Baker believes Bedard will have to take the mound at least one more time and maybe twice before the deadline to satisfy a suitor. Bedard is said to be 50/50 to make his July 22nd start.
- Washburn has about $14.4MM left on his contract, which runs through '09 with limited no-trade protection. The M's would trade him for salary relief rather than prospects.
- Ibanez and Beltre are down on Baker's list because he believes the team owes it to the fans not to put a Triple A offense on the field. While neither player has an .800 OPS, trading either without a big league replacement could lead to an even more embarrassing second half. Additionally, the Mariners like Ibanez's leadership skills. Baker finds the Beltre-to-Twins idea improbable. Interesting note: Beltre is thought to want to return to the L.A. area when his contract ends.
I bet Piniella is in Hendry's ear to get Arthur Rhodes.

Owe it to them? Listen I would rather see a bunch of prospects and twenty somethings that this group of losers! Trade beltre now if he wants to be back in la then great get laroche and young from the dodgers and get rid of that salary. Ibanez needs to go as well anything of value outside of hernandez, putz, morrow, balentein and clement. This is a lost cause get it through your heads already. It's time to start fresh and look toward 2009 and beyond.

So Baker thinks they owe the fans better than a Triple A offense. Last week they had Vidro, Cairo and Bloomquist in the same lineup - hell, they're already putting a Triple A offense on the field. It's always interesting to read Baker's column - for entertainment value only.

Seattle is on the west coast.

I'm sure the Mariners would have interest in one of the Twins young arms in exchange for Beltre. Minny seems to have a surplus of quality SP (I know, thats kind of an oxymoron), but with Liriano close to returning, I'm sure they could work out a deal that would work for both parties.

lol r0ry...i thought the same thing when i read it...

Yup. rOry beat me to the punch on that one as well.

Papelboner, I think you are actually on to something though. Minnesota does have more starting pitchers than spots in their rotation. Obviously Livan Hernandez wouldn't be something Seattle would be interested in but what about a Boof Bonser or Kevin Slowey headlining a package of players?

Rhodes to the Cards?

I'd like to start by saying that mismanagement destroyed the Ms season to be this year. From the top of Bavasi/Armstrong's decision to trade out for Bedard all the way down to the McLaren/Charlton/Stoudemeier decision to put Hernandez as #2 in the rotation in order to make Bedard feel welcome in Seattle as #1. This was hugely misleading to fans and set the former Oriole up for failure. I feel like Clay Bennett bought the Mariners while I was living in Pullman for the last four years...
But, what else has been more of a problem for Seattle 08? Impotent batting avgs or the lack of quality starting pitching? Somehow "both" seems to answer the question.
Why not take advantage of NL desparation with our pitching prospects of today and their rising talent of tomorrow?
Seriously, NL teams right now are likely as stupid and desperate to put together a "winning team for the next season based on 100% pitching!" as the Mariners were at the start of this dismal season.
The Ms should trade out most of their lame duck starting rotation (with the exception of FELIX "el gato" HERNANDEZ) over the bull-pen gems Norm Charlton has yet to have a full season to work with. Think of Bedard, who is either a wimp or was knowingly traded injured to the Mariners by Baltimore. Or think of Washburn who would would probably excel in the NL. Package them together and throw in a free Batista and get some more hitters, please! Developing R.A. Dickey and other AAA come-uppers would be better in my mind than keeping those other losers around...
Trade Morrow? Putz? Green? Not if the Ms want to win over .500 next season... What about Arthur Rhodes, who is just great? He could very well be part of the Ms success story of next year, but it all depends on what is offered for him before the 08 deadline.
As said by Baker, trading Ibanez and Beltre wouldn't make much sense for Safeco Field. Ibanez is this generation's poor-man version of Edgar Martinez (I suppose a good thing relatively speaking), while Beltre is a gold-gloved leader and totally a fan favorite who loves Seattle. If you don't believe me about Beltre, look for the red-headed dude w/ 3rd baseline season tix who brings Beltre statues & posters all the time--Adrian even gave him a signed bat because he was so impressed.
Keep Lopez. Keep Ichiro. Keep Betancourt (unless offer is too good to pass up). Keep Clement for a long time, he could be the replacement for Dan Wilson we've been looking for (despite Clement's lack of defense in comparison).
Riggleman should dangle both Jamie Burke & Willie Bloomquist (who both are pretty decent), as well as entertain offers (if any)for Johjima, Balentien, Reed, & Vidro.
Questions, comments, ideas?

Comments:
trade beltre and ibanez. they will not!!! win with these guys move them and get some decent young guys. They will not win next year with free agents and the junk they throw out there now. Learn from the fleecing the orioles gave you with bedard. Young cost controlled players have way more value then declining veterans. It doesn't matter if beltre has a buddy who brings him statues if has value move him winning is more important then how "guy with statues" feels.

good point, but you forget that if you get rid of someone like that you lose fanbase, ergo you lose ticket sales. beltre's at least worth keeping around, and moreso than Ibanez. trading your only gold-glover who stops most right-handed pull-hitting is akin to cutting your hands off and trying to write a novel.

yes slowey and a little more for beltre that makes sense. both guys have real value. slowey doesnt have much experience and beltres expensive but the needs r right.
i dont like rhodes to the cards terribly much but if it was cheap. boggs or parisi straight up. maybe mather. dont know seattles needs but i figure everyone needs pitching. also isnt washburn lefthanded? if seattle paid some salary(maybe half) and we got him now ok. hed go in the rotation and also maybe the bullpen later in the year. maybe rotation next year, maybe bullpen.

116, nothing personal but I think you are a little overly optimistic. Keep Ibanez.. keep Beltre, Keep Green, Putz, Lopez and Betancourt? You named about 3/4s of the team. A team that is one of the worst in baseball.
First off Betancourt and Lopez should be VERY available in a trade. Both are awful defensively this year and both have very poor on base skills. Ibanez should be dealt regardless. He is walking after this year and if we can get a couple prospects for him now, DO IT!
Beltre is more valuable to the Mariners because there is no 3B prospect knocking on the door. But if we could get LaRoche + another player or two, you do that as well.
You have to understand that this team needs some massive changes and keeping most of the current core isn't going to help in that rebuild.
Ibanez, Rhodes and Washburn should all be dealt for whatever we can get for them. If we could dump Kenji, that would be huge.. fat chance on that though. Beltre should be kept unless we get some REAL value for him.
Seattle needs some big changes.

BaseballGuru, you are so far off on that evaluation I don't know where to start. Your logic is mind boggling.
Posted by: thr33niL | July 15, 2008 at 09:10 AM
Dude, the twins need a 3rd basemen !! and they wouldent head line with a pitcher. You would get Dennard Span who could be an awesome center feilder, who is fast as all hell and hits for Ave, boof bonser also has devestating suff if someone could get his head on straight, and prolly one of out ++ minor league pitchers try kevin Mulvey who is 22 and playing very well in triple A, i don't even know who you have in center, but span is an upgrade TRUST ME,
Posted by: Bray991 | July 16, 2008 at 10:08 AM
thr33niL, dumping more than 1/4s the Mariners would be crazy. not only would they run the risk of trading a worthwhile youngin' (past example: adam jones) but they'd fair out no better than the Marlins after their championship years. Seattle doesn't need big changes (already happened), they need some crucial changes (trade deadline impending).
You are abolsutely right on one thing, though. I didn't realize how short Ibanez's contract is. If we kept him around I'd doubt him walking off to another team, but its always possible. Thus, trading him would be a good idea. Especially now that big-name players are in consideration for him.
And FYI, Jose Lopez would make a wayyyy better DH than 2B for the Mariners
Posted by: 116ismyfavoritenumber | July 16, 2008 at 02:54 PM
slowey and denard span aren't going anywhere. i could see the twins parting with some good young pitching NOT in the majors (swarzak, duensing, manship, mulvey, humber are all expendable). but i don't think the twins would be wise (and they are) to give up any major league talent. remember, they're rebuilding too. they're more likely to give up a oouple prospect pitchers and take beltre's salary. keeping beltre makes no sense for the M's, because his value is low with his salary and they are going to stink for awhile.
Posted by: minnesotawins | July 17, 2008 at 01:07 AM
swarzak and mulvey for beltre actually makes sense for both teams. the twins have plenty of pitching in their system, and are getting the righty to bat behind morneau and a great defensive third basemen. the M's are getting a high upside guy in swarzak (he was rumored by SI to headline a deal for atkins last offseason) and Mulvey, while cutting 12 million off next year's salary. DO IT TWINS!
Posted by: minnesotawins | July 17, 2008 at 01:12 AM
now that i think of it, Swarzak and Mulvey for Beltre makes a lot of sense for both teams. The M's are getting a high upside Swarzak (who was rumored by SI last offseason to headline an atkins deal) and Mulvey, while cutting Beltre's salary. You're not gonna get anybody's top prospects for beltre, so stop dreaming M's fans. The Twins are getting the right handed bat they need and the glove at third they need. do it twins!
Posted by: minnesotawins | July 17, 2008 at 01:14 AM
Yes, i would love for the twins to get beltre, that would be so NICE !! but i am looking at our roster, and we have a bunch of outfeiders who are here and more comming up, and if they want to move Ibanez they will need another OF so why not give up Span or mayber even cuddyer?? and i would rather have Atkins then beltre and they would be more willing to trade him becuase there #1 prospect plays 3rd base!!! G atkins for Span and Swarzak !! make the move!!
