unfortunately, Myers has little to no value whatsoever right now. They might be able to pull a really low level prospect with a little bit of upside, but that doesn't help them this season.

I actually would not mind Randy Winn. I think that would be a good idea. Castillo is out and the Mets can use a 2 hitter, as Endy Chavez has been playing there and that will only work for so long. I know Winn is not a great corner OF guy, but he can play all 3 spots and while he doesnt provide the pop you want from a corner, the Mets have some of that pop in CF so they can get away with it. He also switch hits and would not cost much, fitting right into the 2 hole for the time being. If Church and Alou come back, Winn still gets his AB's as he spells both of them 2-3 days a week. Given the Mets currently constructed roster, Winn seems like a very good idea to me.

Not to mention he adds speed to the top of the lineup, and a switch hitter to provide a good at bat against a righty or lefty. I would have no problem taking his whole contract and paying him the 8 mil for next year. I believe he is under contract through 09 for about 8 mil for 09, so that is not a horrible commitment to get some help right now. He has been hot, and the Mets are starting to roll I think he could fit right in at shea.

Myers is really a jack***. I read that they turned off the stadium gun readings at Lehigh to prevent him from trying to muscle up and blow it by hitters. Exactly the same tendency that has led to missed locations on his fastball and about 60 home runs this season. I think he basically has the mental capacity of a head of lettuce.
The guy closes adequately for half a year and he thinks he's Mariano Rivera. Hey Brett, how about you mix in a salad and cross your fingers that the Phillies will let you back on their big league roster at some point???

I agree with nrmax that Winn is probably the Mets' best option in terms of what they would have to give up and what they would get in return. Winn would give them a versatile OF who can play all three positions and bat from both sides of the plate. Between him, Beltran, Church and Alou, they should be able to construct a good outfield lineup nearly everyday, as Winn can help offer rest to all three other players.
Plus, I think that because of his contract he probably wouldn't cost much more than a low level prospect. Obviously some of the Mets' better prospects are low level guys ( Francisco Pena, Wilmer Flores), and those guys are off limits, but I think that Winn would be a solid move. I doubt that they would have to give anything up that they would seriously regret in the long run.

No offense Tim, but I don't think Gallardo's career stats mean ace yet! Maybe in 2-3 years. Coming from a cubs fan I know, but that would be like calling our former #5 Matt Clement a ace when he was with us.
Here is Gallardo's career stats:
G GS CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB SO W L P/GS WHIP BAA ERA
23 20 0 0 130.1 122 52 49 10 43 114 9 5 97.8 1.27 .248 3.38

Gallardo has looked good, but people would've called Felix Hernandez and Francisco Liriano aces in the past and Johnny Cueto an ace after the first 3 weeks of this season. Let's wait to see him come back before counting him in with the aces.

Didn't a torn ACL used to keep players down for at least a year? How the hell can Gallardo possibly come back after 4-5 months?
Posted by: SBE | July 09, 2008 at 12:58 PM
Gallardo's stats last year were deceiving due to one 11 ER thrashing at Coors. But even including that...a 3.38 ERA is an ace. Francisco Liriano was DEFINITELY an ace in his first full season.

"Francisco Liriano was DEFINITELY an ace in his first full season."
He was more than an ace. When he was a starter he was THE best pitcher in all of baseball Johan included. His numbers were ridiculous as evidenced by the fact that he carried my fantasy team into the play-offs despite my tean being in second to last place before he became a starter.
Trading him for Teixeira was the best move I have ever made in my entire life in any capacity!

If Gallardo comes back in late september and get maybe 2 starts in before the postseason, I think he will pitch in October. If he cant get any starts in in the regular season, I think they will put him on the shelf until next year. Can you imagine this starting 5 come playoff time.
CC, Sheets, Gallardo, Parra, Suppan
That could potentially put the brewers over the top, but it depends on how fast he rehabs and all that stuff.

I disagree about the salary-eating strategy would probably only help with Winn. I think Sherman was hinting that the other team could include a bad contract with the player.
ie...Seattle could throw in a guy like Sexson who makes more the 2 million dollars a month. Even to lose him at the deadline would save Seattle around 4.5 mil. Vidro could be another possibility depending on what his 09 option is based off of. I'm sure the other teams have bad contracts like that also.

I hadn't thought of that spieldogg, you make a good point.

Melancon for Fuentes? Pass. Fuentes is going to be 2008's Gagne.

Just looking at the Mets top prospects, 8 of their top 10 are pitchers. Just a point. But Winn is a quality outfielder, with a little pop, you can count on him for a constant, .285 batting average, with 10 home runs, and 80 RBI's. But he's doing even better this year. I think Randy Winn to the Mets for a guy like Dylan Owen. Doesn't blow anyone away, but is consistent.
P.S. Hey Tim do you have any info on the Giants signing Posey? I'll be pissed if they wasted the 5th overall pick on someone they don't sign.
P.S.S. Mets fans, where is Fernando Martinez? How is he doing? What is his ETA? That kid looks great, I wish the A's or Giants signed him.
Posted by: AriGoldisaG | July 09, 2008 at 04:14 PM
Fernando Martinez just got back from the disabled list and is hitting .299 on the season for AA Binghamton. I think Randy Winn for one or two low level guys like Owen would be a fair trade.
Posted by: willie randolph sucks | July 09, 2008 at 04:25 PM
So does that mean he could be up for a september call-up? How much of a signing bonus did you give that guy anyway?
Posted by: AriGoldisaG | July 09, 2008 at 05:12 PM
Ari, under normal circumstances no way on a Nando call up, just because the Mets are usually conservative with this stuff, but the kid is 19, has held his own(albeit while not dominating) for 2 years at AA with kids 3-4 years older then him, and he is about the same age as Reyes was when he got the call. Plus, with Alou down, Church down, and no real corner OF's I have been hearing that he may get a call in the next few weeks even just to give him a cup of coffee and see how he handles himself, to try to gain an idea of what he can do if/when Alou goes back down.
I think they gave him like a mil and a half as a 16 year old back in 05.

Brett Myers just needs a change of scenery. Maybe a team like San Diego....
Posted by: smhg30 | July 09, 2008 at 08:13 PM
And in an absolutely stunning turn of events, the iron man himself, Moises Alou, hurt himself again at his rehab start for the Mets (I believe Binghamton) last night. This makes a LF acquisition or a Fernando cup of coffee all the more likely.
