Pirates Owners Did Not Kill Bay-Braves Trade

TUESDAY: Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette talked to sources with the Pirates and Braves, who said there is no truth to the report.  New ownership has not vetoed any trades.

MONDAY: According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com:

A proposed deal, which would have brought Jason Bay to Atlanta in exchange for four Minor Leaguers, was killed when presented to the Pirates owners for approval.

Bowman believes Pirates targets might include Brent Lillibridge, Brandon Jones, a talented A ball pitcher, and a marginal position player prospect.  He says the Braves will continue to pursue Bay.

I didn't attack you so why do you find it necessary to attack me? I am not from NY so do not make assumptions. You have attacked atlanta fans, NY fans and called me a "nipple dick" for no apparent reason. These boards are a great place for discussion until people like you clog them up with nonsense.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

"It's like playing cards with my brother's kids...."-BBT

No offense to Mets fans I do believe they have enough to make the Bay deal but I just like what the Braves have in their system better.

The only arguements I could make for trading Bay are first they get an amazing package from the Braves (i.e. A top ten and a couple upside guys) the other point is if Bay gets moved the Pirates for the first time in probably 16 years would have money to actually be active in the free agency market I mean for real FAs like Sheets etc.
we can't afford Sabathia he will want Johan money.

Personally I would rather just keep Bay and try to move Wilson, LaRoche, and Osoria/Grabow.

Pay no attention to him nyyfan, I get the feeling he'll be banned soon enough. I'm pretty sure he never even discussed the deal, deciding to attack individual posters and the towns he thinks they live in instead. I feel kind of sorry for him. I can't imagine his life is to great if this is how he gets his jollies.

I should be clear when I say a top ten I mean overall not in their system

BucSox,

I've tried explaining this before, but I'll say it again now, teams don't trade top 10 overall prospects for positional players, especially positional players at non-important defensive positions who only have a little over a year left of their contract. The only guy ranked that high traded recently was Cameron Maybin, and the return was a 25 year old 3B under team control for 3 years who has a far better track record than Bay. To think the return on Bay is going to be that plus some is just insane. Teams aren't as dumb with top prospects as they once were. They realize 6 cost-controlled years of their top 10 prospect is far more valuable than 1 year of Jason Bay. I'm sorry you guys in Pittsburgh haven't gotten that memo yet.

Just to put this in perspective for Pirates fans, do you think it would be worth it to give McCutchen up for a guy like Bay? Coming into this season he was "only" the 14th rated prospect, though with promotions he'd be 9 or 10 now.

Absolutely nixa37! If it meant we had a chance at the World Series this year or next, definitely! Bay will still be productive for many years to come.

Nixa, I don't expect them to you misread what I wrote I said the only arguement I had for trading Bay was IF and I mean IF someone would part with a top 10. I didn't say I expected it to happen nor do I believe anyone would I just said the Pirates should only trade bay IF that situation occured.

whats the big difference between what the braves get for teixeira and 2 months and what the pirates get for bay and a year and 2 months?

Doesn't really matter much anyway, since the Braves aren't going to be buying! Say goodbye to Tex!

surprised Tim didn't update this after Dejan K of the Post-Gazette got Pirates management on record denying these claims?

Bucsox,

Sorry about that then. I don't necessarily agree with that opinion as I don't think Bay should be in the Pirates long term plans, but I understand wanting to hold out for that. I doubt it will happen and I think it will hurt the Pirates in the long run if they do, but that's really another discussion.

ChicagoBucco,

That's pretty much irrelevant as that's what Pirates management would say regardless of whether or not this happened. No one wants it to leak out that their owner doesn't trust the FO.

not irrelevant when it comes to objectivity or journalistic ethics ... print both sides.

The part I find amazing is the Braves thinking they're still buyers? Their record is as bad as the Pirates. They have 3 teams to pass in their division and the wild card is even more out of reach.

It really amazes me how all these rumors get out there when there's not a shred of truth to them. I don't doubt that the Braves and Pirates have had talks, what I doubt is the rest of the story just the same as every other journalist out there is reporting the d'backs as the team the braves have honed in on and this schmuck is saying everybody but the d'backs. Amazing!!

What I meant was the braves are honed in on the d'backs for Texeira and Bowman says any team but the d'backs. When this guy gets something right, maybe then we can start giving him some credibility.

The Braves are shooting for next season, especially now that Chipper is on the DL. If Bay came to Atlanta and the Teixiera/Chad Tracy+ deal goes through, they have this lineup:

CF Blanco
2B K.Johnson
3B C.Jones
LF Bay
C McCann
1B Tracy
RF Francoeur
SS Y.Escobar

And with Tex gone and Bay signed cheap for one more year, there's enough money to get an outfielder(s) to replace Francoeur and/or Blanco.
