If I were Huntington I would be very hesitant to part with Marte unless someone just "wow"s him with an offer...
Type A compensation for what may be a fairly deep draft in 2009 would be hard to pass up...

Mick, the 2009 draft is suppossed to be a thin one, not a deep one.

Actually, I heard it was a deep draft, too. But whatever.
I think saving Marte for the picks is a good idea in theory. The only problem is the Pirates are too cheap and too poorly run to actually sign their draft picks.
For example, this year we took Tanner Scheppers and Justin Wilson with two of our top 10 picks. We probably aren't going to sign either one. What good is drafting these guys if you don't actually sign them?
So the Type A picks sound good but if we don't actually use them, then Marte is basically leaving for nothing. It's probably better if we get two minor league guys even if they aren't elite prospects.
