Pirates Rumors: Alvarez, Marte

A few notes from Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette this morning.

  • The Pirates are still engaged in deep, tight-knit negotiations with first round pick Pedro Alvarez.  No one's talking, but Kovacevic heard a rumor that the sides are $2MM apart.  This might not be settled until the August 15th deadline.
  • Kovacevic talked to a Pirates source who said Boston's interest in Damaso Marte has heightened.  Many clubs are after Marte.  The lefty has a $6MM club option for '09 with a $250K buyout.  That actually might be worth considering.  Marte seems likely to sneak into Type A free agent status - important stats like wins, saves, and innings are all up from last year.

If I were Huntington I would be very hesitant to part with Marte unless someone just "wow"s him with an offer...

Type A compensation for what may be a fairly deep draft in 2009 would be hard to pass up...

Mick, the 2009 draft is suppossed to be a thin one, not a deep one.

Actually, I heard it was a deep draft, too. But whatever.

I think saving Marte for the picks is a good idea in theory. The only problem is the Pirates are too cheap and too poorly run to actually sign their draft picks.

For example, this year we took Tanner Scheppers and Justin Wilson with two of our top 10 picks. We probably aren't going to sign either one. What good is drafting these guys if you don't actually sign them?

So the Type A picks sound good but if we don't actually use them, then Marte is basically leaving for nothing. It's probably better if we get two minor league guys even if they aren't elite prospects.
