According to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com, the Red Sox are "deep in conversations" for White Sox infielder Juan Uribe. Knobler says the return is unclear but the White Sox want to shed Uribe's salary. Uribe has about $1.7MM left on his contract this year.
Uribe's White Sox career has been on life support several times this year, but he's managed to stick around. With Joe Crede's back ailing, Uribe is currently filling in at third base.
I don't buy this rumor for a second. Jed Lowrie will hit far better than Uribe and is decent enough at SS; I don't care how good Uribe's defense is, the Red Sox would sooner play Lowrie than dump Uribe's career .294 OBP into their lineup.
who would become the whitesox utility infielder? Getz perhaps - he is the future second basemen and has been hitting great in AAA this season. Uribe is worthless though so I doubt this is a true rumor
The Red Sox should just leave Lowrie in and give him some experience while Lugo is out. Juan Uribe is terrible - I've been watching their series with Seattle and having Lowrie in the lineup is negligible compared to Lugo. If not for anything else, at least showcase Lowrie for a trade OR see exactly what he has on the major league level.
"Getz perhaps - he is the future second basemen and has been hitting great in AAA this season"
Hmm well actually he really isn't their future second baseman. With Alexei Ramirez locked up and Gordon Beckham probably ready by 2010, I believe those two are their shortstop and second baseman of the future, even if its not clear who will be which.
There is no way theo does this. this trade makes absolutely no sense at all trading your backup ss for a replacment for lugo that is just as bad. i mean i havent seen lowrie make an error yet and he is hitting .300 at the big league level and getting on base a third of the time. Uribe is trash its completely pointless and a dumb move to trade for him
I hope the White Sox don't trade Uribe. He is a good ball player. He gets hits when you need them and can fill in for Crede when he's out. Personally I hope they play him at third and Crede at first. Trade Konerko instead.
"Personally I hope they play him at third and Crede at first. Trade Konerko instead."
Yeah! Let's move Crede off third to put a middle infielder there! It's not like Crede is a great defensive third baseman or anything. Oh wait. Yes he is. Crede will never play another position because his defense is too good to move him, that's where a lot of his value lies.
While I agree that Konerko should be moved, my belief is that they should move Swisher from center to first, and then try either Anderson or Jerry Owens there.
Or, in my fantasy world, they move Konerko and then move Swisher to first, add Brian Roberts, and move Alexei Ramirez to center, or possibly to a utility role wher he plays SS, 2B, 3B and CF.
Juan Uribe and a B prospect for a small bag of peanuts... yes, Uribe has negative value. Without the prospect, the White Sox wouldn't even get the peanuts.
Read the article, folks. Apparently Cora is unhappy being a backup to Lowrie, as he should be.
"It's not clear who the White Sox would get in return for Uribe, but one possibility is Alex Cora, the utility infielder who has fallen out of favor in Boston. Cora's brother, Joey, is the White Sox's bench coach"
I love Cora and how he's accepted his role as our utility infielder, but if he's unhappy it would make some sense to trade one for the other.
Uribe's glove/arm would be a nice late inning replacement for Lugo/Lowrie at SS and he can also give Pedroia some rest.
I don't see the Sox doing much at the deadline, other than minor moves like this and possibly set up a replacement for Varitek. Getting burned by Gagne last year has me thinking Theo isn't going to be quick to make the same mistake (esp. after last night's promising relief outing from Masterson).
Before people start freaking out about the Sox not giving Lowrie a chance at starting, it seems pretty cleary they want to swap utility men with Cora and Uribe. I'm sure Cora thought he would get a chance to play more if Lugo was hurt and he has been upset with his playing time. Seems like a minor move since both men can play good defense at 2b/3b/ss without bringing much offensively.
This deal actually kinda reminds me of the way the Sox acquired Cora. An upset utility infielder Ramon Vazquez shipped to the Indians in exchange for Cora. All this said, I think the sox stick with Cora and this amounts to nothing more than talk.
if he can come in and producne right awqay like he is capable of then do it. he could be a considerable upgrade from lugo.
the sox need to go get arroyo and have him come in and shut down a team for a few innings like he is capable of. thats all we need him to do and thats all he can do. he isnt a starter but a dam good middle reliever. maybe try to get dunn in a trade too to add a batt with considerable upside to replace manny the following season.
at the most we trade to the reds a bowden, crisp, cris carter and edgar martinez or hansen.
yeah bowden and hansen could turn into stars in cinci but its cinci... they wont be able to challenge the sox or anyone other for quite a few seasons.
if i were the sox i would make that trade very quickly and start working to get it done because thats gonna add to this team exactly what we needed

The fact that you are considering trading Michael Bowden for Bronson Arroyo is ridiculous. You want to bring in Arroyo as a 10/mil per year RP? In my opinion, a lot of Arroyo's value is as an innings eating starter. Coming back to the AL he is at best a 3/4 SP who will eat innings. His talent would be wasted as a reliever.

People here do realize that Arroyo has a 5.60 ERA this year and is due $22.5M for 2009-10. He's closing in on salary dump territory in terms of trade value.
UConnHuskies remember a player named carl pavano? a guy they said was untouchable and we traded him away. he is killing our team terribly right now isnt he? arroyo was dependable for the sox. he was consistant and most of the games he lost were not his fault it was the offense not giving him runs. 10 mill reliever that can shut down a team? your telling me you wouldnt want a player who can do that for a team? screw the 10 mill the sox can handle that its about winning and he can help them win more than a player like fuentes who can only give you one inning.
as long as its uribe for cash thats ok, i dont see how it could hurt

I assume you mean the Pawtucket Red Sox. Because he's not good enough to play in Boston.

Really doesn't make sense to me unless Theo thinks Lowrie can't make it as an everyday SS, which from a small sample, don't seem to be the case.

Shortstops to the Red Sox is like drummers to Spinal Tap.

I'm just curious about how a team could become "deep in conversations" for White Sox infielder Juan Uribe.
Seems to me that any interest whatsoever would generate an incredibly short conversation.
Any other GM: "Kenny, I'm desperate enough to take Uribe off of your hands."
KW: "Done. Thanks."
There, that took all of 30 seconds.

Maybe a change of scenery would be good for both players. Plus the red sox get a great glove down the strech I say go for it.

I think trading Uribe would be incredibly shortsighted and cheap on the White Sox part.
He is clearly their best defensive backup as he plays all 3 positions well and they just dumped Ozuna.
They need this depth and if they plan to go deep in the playoffs, what difference does $ 1 mil. make ?
I hope they keep him.
