Rangers should trade
Salty for Bailey
Laird and Guardado for Tucker and Gaby Hernandez
Teag, Padilla, F. Francisco, and another player for Hughes.
That will leave Max to be the everyday catcher.

From what I've heard from Reds fans they'd be open to bringing in Teagarden for Bailey.
They believe that Salty's future is not behind the plate and that Laird isn't that much of a step up from what is already there.

The Rangers will keep 2 of the 4, and I think those 2 will be Teagarden and Ramirez. Laird or Salty should be gone before the deadline. The only way they part with Teagarden is in a big package for an ACE like Holladay or Peavy. Are the Reds shopping Harang?

I'm surprised that the Angels wouldn't trade Aybar or Izturis to land Sherrill. Hell, add a low ball prospect.
Granted they don't necessary need bullpen help... it's about the rings and adding him would definitely put them over the edge.

I'm not surprised the Angels told the O's no on Aybar and I wouldn't be surprised if the answer is the same for Izturis. They traded Cabrera off his best year because of Aybar specifically and Izturis has more value in his role as super sub/short platoon than Sherill would have setting up Frankie.

I think that Laird is our best trading piece. I think everyone that wants to give up on Salty needs to realize that he is the youngest of the four catchers that we have. He's only 22, it takes a while to become a major league hitter.

i'd love to see renteria back in a cards uniform...plus he's never been a AL player hes always struggled on that side for some reason...so maybe the cards fans and coming back to the NL could spark him back up

Will Gerald Laird really get a major league ready starting pitcher? I think the Rangers would have to sweeten the deal with a Blalock, Padilla, or even CJ Wilson.
Posted by: Texas Baller | July 29, 2008 at 12:58 PM
Padilla is a major league ready starting pitcher so I doubt they'd include him just to get someone else back. Wilson has been shaky, but Daniels said he wasn't inclined to trade any of his relievers either. The best bet would be a package for Laird and someone like Blalock, Catalanotto or Nelson Cruz, but nobody really wants that (understandably) in exchange for the kind of pitcher Texas is looking for.

Angels said no about Izturis? I find that hard to believe.
I would trade Izturis in a heart-beat for Sherrill. Make me feel much bette having a few options in the bullpen when Frankie walks after this year.

Deal centered aroun Vandenhurk and Laird?
Posted by: laxtonto | July 29, 2008 at 01:21 PM
i think laird could easily warrant a major league ready pitcher. i'm pretty sure he is under control for at least next year if not more, he is having an up year this year in offense hitting .300+ but he'll consistently hit probably around the .280 mark, but his defense and the way he can handle a pitching staff are his selling points. obviously he hasnt had much to work with in texas, but with a strong rotation, laird could do some great things behind the plate.
i also agree with txrangers22, in that the rangers should consider trading one of their catchers in a major package to acquire a frontline pitcher, rather than acquire a bunch of 3/4 projectable starters. halladay would be great in texas, sinker-baller who eats innings and doesn't have to rely on our risky bullpen. i would love peavy, but i dont think the padres will dump him in the rebuilding process. he'll keep fans at petco.

ps - is there any way the rangers can pry josh johnson from the fish? my guess is probably not, but i sure love the way he pitches.

F*ck a lefty reliever I'm not going to pay a kings ransome for Sherrill or Fuentes when we probally aren't going to win this year anyway. Stay the course and keep our prospects and build for next year.
I'm excited about possibily bring Renteria back. He made a HUGE mistake chasing the money in Boston instead fo resigning with us in the first place. In a weak SS market next year he is the best fit. Would he take a 2 yr @ $12-14 million deal? That is about as much as I would give him.

I agree bjsguess, plus I believe Aybar would be able to handle shortstop by himself pretty well. The only thing is that we would be loosing Izturis's clutchness.

I have difficulty believing the O's would swap Sherrill for Izturis. Even Aybar seems...light.
Frankly, I think McPhail's desire to nab a SS in a Sherrill swap is proving severely limiting. Just get the best player(s)/prospect(s) you can, regardless of position! Also, it shows what happens when you wait too long. I'd bet Milwaukee would've been much more likely to deal Escobar for Sherrill BEFORE the Sabathia deal. As much as I appreciate what McPhail did over the winter, he DOES seem to drag his heels a bit much for my taste. Billy Beane strikes while the iron is hot; McPhail wonders if it's going to get hotter until it has cooled off.
How 'bout calling up the Rays' management and offering Sherrill and Huff (certainly cheaper than other options...like Tex) and maybe a decent prospect, for Brignac and Niemann. With the Yanks hot of late and the Sox certain to make their run, they may need to do something to keep up with the Joneses and a package deal could help address multiple needs. The O's could even eat a chunk of Huff's contract. Just a thought.

...Also, I wonder why the O's would ask about Izturis OR Aybar when Wood is in Triple A and clearly doesn't appear to be a Mike Scoscia type player. If the Angels were in fact interested in Sherrill, it would seem to me that Wood would be a pretty ideal centerpiece for a deal...for both teams, no?

"The Rangers will keep 2 of the 4, and I think those 2 will be Teagarden and Ramirez. Laird or Salty should be gone before the deadline."
I agree with this. Or at least I think this is what they should do. Obviously Laird isn't part of the long term solution at catcher, and should be moved at the deadline. But between the other three young guys, Teagarden is by far the best behind the plate, and he swings a pretty good bat as well. I think he's gotta stay, he should be the one behind the plate in '09 and behind. As for the other two, I would think they'll hold onto Ramirez. He's shown a ton with the bat, more than Salty, and seems more likely to be an impact bat than Saltalamacchia. At this point thats what's more important, because it's likely that one of those two will either play first base or DH, with Chris Davis playing the other.

Holy crap. I wrote what I wrote above before reading the Rosenthal article. Rosenthal- granted he may be wrong- makes it sound like the Rays might be willing to deal Brignac for Sherrill...but McPhail doesn't want to trade in-division. If any other O's fans want to join me, I think I'm going to head down to OPACY right now, find McPhail, and BEAT THE LIVING SNOT OUT OF HIM!!! Idiot! If this is true, I swear to God, I'm done with this guy. I don't care about the Bedard deal; it's a 'what have you done for me lately' world and I want Brignac! This is absurd! Don't want to deal in-division. Why?! We're not gonna win the friggin' thing. We're not gonna win next year either...especially with JUAN CASTRO AS OUR SHORTSTOP! MORON! Call up the Tampa boys and BEG them to make that offer again! AAAAARRRRRGGHHH! So frustrated. ...trade in division. WHO CARES! What are we...helping out the Red Sox? The Yankees? Is Adam Loewen the outfielder going to come back next year as Babe friggin' Ruth?! STUPID IDIOTS.................(I could go on forever)

sorry about the repeat. TypeKey is acting up again. After I'm done with McFail (yeah, I said it, Cubs fans), I'm going after the guy who came up with TypeKey.

there hasnt been much trade talk about yankees interested in padilla but i wouldnt be surprised if at the end of the trade deadline the yankees get padilla
Posted by: yankeefanbriccio13 | July 29, 2008 at 02:00 PM
The Yankees would have to give up a pitcher just to get Padilla, which would defeat the purpose. Not that I don't think it could happen, it just doesn't seem likely given Jon Daniels strong stance on only selling if quality arms are coming back to Texas.

Anges fans how about
Huff+sherrill
for
Morales,Branadon wood, izturis
oriolespay all of huff's remaining contract this year. huff they get that power they are looking for without giving up kotchman. They also get a solid lefty.
O's get a guy that can play short or third in the future. A legit younger cost controlled first basemen and a shortstop that isn't the worst player in the world like we currently put ou there.

Hey Morgan,
If you wanna deal Sherrill and Huff and pay Huff's contract, how 'bout Wood, Adenhart, Sean Rodriguez, and a low A starter (Robert Fish, for instance...obviously not Walden, who's at High A now anyway or even Reckling).
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 29, 2008 at 02:27 PM
...I'm just saying, Huff ain't the name Tex is, but the numbers are comparable, he'd cost less (like you said, no Kotchman), you get the southpaw reliever, and Huff can play a number of positions on the field. Don't undersell him TOO much.
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 29, 2008 at 02:30 PM
If Rosenthal is right (and I'm not reading too much into his rhetoric), I'd love to see Sherrill (and even a prospect) for Brignac, then Huff to LAA for Wood (or Adenhart, a MD boy who may just need a change of scenery to get his stuff back). That could be a nice left side of the infield for years to come. Maybe wishful thinking, but as far as the respective deals are concerned, it tracks with team needs, rumors, and the names match up fairly well.
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 29, 2008 at 02:35 PM
joemorgan - I would do that deal in a heartbeat if I was Tony Reagins.
