Rosenthal's Latest: Fuentes, Holliday, Sherrill

Ken Rosenthal tops off the day with a column full of rumors.

  • Signing Mark Teixeira as a replacement for Manny Ramirez doesn't make sense for the Red Sox, who don't want to take on that kind of mega-contract.
  • The Phillies were recently working on a blockbuster with Colorado that would have netted them Brian Fuentes and Matt Holliday for something like Shane Victorino, J.A. Happ, Carlos Carrasco, and Lou Marson.  Those talks have stalled, and the added payroll might've been a problem for the Phillies anyway.
  • Though Frank McCourt denies it, Rosenthal says the Dodgers owned vetoed a CC Sabathia/Casey Blake/Jamey Carroll blockbuster because of a desire to keep trades payroll-neutral.
  • The Rockies, as well as the many suitors for Brian Fuentes, fear he could accept an offer of arbitration and saddle them with an $8MM salary in '09 instead of two draft picks.  Given Fuentes' stated desire to close, I find this unlikely.
  • A Pirates scout watched David Price's last start, though he was likely looking at other members of the Montgomery Biscuits.  The Rays are known to be interested in Xavier Nady.
  • The A's, stacked with second base candidates, are already getting calls on Adrian Cardenas.  Trading Mark Ellis would make more sense though.
  • Rosenthal believes the Orioles are reluctant to trade George Sherrill because they don't have a suitable replacement for him in the ninth inning this year.
  • Brewers minor league shortstop Alcides Escobar is untouchable, and his ascent could lead the team to shop J.J. Hardy this winter.

Who would play center field if they traded Victorino

Probably Werth. And though I was mocked in the blog reax post, I have to say I wasn't that far off with my surmise (though it was a complete throw in the air).

— Phillies Nation

I am not one to mock, though I don't see the Rockies wanting Myers for Holliday.

Beane has go some guts man! Dude this team is going to have crazy options over the next 3-5 yrs. He should just get it done and move ellis and street to just finish off the last of it.
Now the orioles should be watching beane right now and paying close attention. hey fleeced the mariners and astros now seem to see the sparkling lights of a .500 season. You don't win trophys for .500 seasons. Sell, sell, and sell O's. If they can get value like the rangers got for gagne they need to pull the trigger. They have built up some value on guys like sherrill, huff and even in a way millar. I would hold on to roberts but if bradford, sherrill, walker, payton, millar, huff have partys interested and the price is right go for it!

Well I mean I got raked in the comments. Anyway, I wouldn't think the Rox would want Myers for Holliday. The Phils would have to likely throw in the farm along with.

how about ramus
or a aaa plus prospects

Rasmus is completely off limits for Sherrill and the O's drafted a great catcher last year in Matt Wieters, possible the best position prospect in baseball..

I think they would ask for Jamie Garcia and get denied...I think John Jay or Joe Mather and Jess Todd would be reasonable? Maybe even Peter Kozma

A's just got Cardenas, he looks like he could be their 2B/3B of the future. I think they would be hesitant to deal him in a flip, but it might be possible.

Trading Ellis is up in the air at this point. On one hand, they could trade Ellis and get value for him. On the other, they could keep Ellis, offer him Arbitration, and if he accepts keep him for another year, if he declines, get two draft picks.

"i think fuentes isnt that valuable."

I don't think he is valuable enough to give up a big time prospects, but a left-handed reliever with the ability to close against all types of hitters is very important.

I think it would take something in the range of Jay, Todd and Kozma and maybe even a PTBNL, since Sherrill is under control for so long and the Cards will hold on to their top guys. If i was the Cards i'd look more at a Marte and adding Guzman to help at short instead of focusing on just one bullpen arm.

I think that Billy should keep Ellis until the end of the year unless some team comes around offering two 1st round draft pick-caliber players. No point seing as how we don't really have any 2B prospects close, other than Cliff Pennington but you can't really trust him. And Ellis likes it here in Oakland.

BTW - George Sherril is 31 and is in his final season with arbitration. For you cardinal fans that think he's young and in expensive.

I HATE TYPEKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I say the A's keep Ellis until the end of the year and get the 2 1st round picks. Unless some one comes around shopping 2 1st round caliber players there's no point.

BTW - George Sherril is 31 and is entering his final season that he is eligable for arbitration (2009). Just to let all those cards fans know.

Tim, who else would the Pirates be scouting from that team on a night David Price is pitching. There are some good pitchers on that team but they are lacking in position prospects. Unless you are actually thinking that we want Baldelli. HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa.

sox dont need tex. he isnt what they need at the moment and he just isnt the power hitter he was once thought to be. sox if they are going to TRY and find a replacement for manny the only player i see being as productive is holliday. if they are gonna replace manny dont let another team get holliday.

do you see the sox going out and making a trade for hardy if he is on the market? or will the maybe try for young? try lugo as another outfielder to replace crisp who i dont believe will be there next year? tell me your thoughts.

Wow, I think the Rockies would have got slaughtered if they did that trade. Their GM wouldnt be allowed to show his ace in public. Hes lucky that Colorado isnt a huge baseball town, because if it was and he did that trade, he would need to be put into Witness Protectection. I think the trade I had proposed in an earlier comment was much better than this deal that was close to being done.

"Hes lucky that Colorado isnt a huge baseball town"

Colorado isn't a town at all ;-)

Mark Ellis was a type B FA last year (almost a type A). Just pointing out that he might not net the A's 2 draft picks in arb. He'll be close.

So if the Pirates were looking at Price, that would prolly be Bay and Marte in some sort of package... Price, Brignac and another prospect?

"BTW - George Sherril is 31 and is in his final season with arbitration. For you cardinal fans that think he's young and in expensive."

Actually I believe that Sherrill was a Super-Two player this year and it was is first of 4 arbitration years. Now I have seen a couple conflicting reports that he only has two more arbitration years after this but either way he's under team control for at least 3 playoff runs if not four. http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-ostrades0716,0,5837419.story

It's time that we no longer consider Rosenthal a reliable source. It's just simply his "opinion".

steveo,

here is my link.

Sorry, I'm pretty sure CBS is correct on thins one.

AriGoldisaG,

While it is true Sherrill has played in four seasons prior to this one, he has only been a full time player for the past two seasons with the M's. While getting time in might have used up his option years, it didn't affect his arb. status. So even if his first two years combined counted as a full year then this is his fourth year (first arb. year) and he would be under control for 2009 and 2010. According to the B-Sun he is under control until 2011. This seems to be supported by Cots http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/baltimore-orioles_112321768568552760.html

But in the reliever market Tim mentioned that he is only under control through 2010.

"So if the Pirates were looking at Price, that would prolly be Bay and Marte in some sort of package... Price, Brignac and another prospect?"

I can't stop laughing, and I think I simultaneously shat and vomited.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Schnoah, how much did you smoke this morning? Price is already to much for Bay and is about equal for a deal with Bay and Marte, but now you want the rays to throw in a top 50 prospect in brignac, and another? Seriously, lay off the cocaine, I personnaly recomend weed.

I'm sure the Pirates scouts were there to check out the relievers, Morlan, Reid, both promising young arms that could be a piece in a Nady or Marte deal. I don't think the Rays would even trade Price for Bay and Marte....not saying that the vaule isn't right just saying the precieved value to the Rays of Price is much higher. i.e. they invested 6 million in him so it would be like adding that to Bay and Marte's contracts, he should be able to be a frontline starter from day one next season, unlike their other talented arms, Davis, Hellickson, Houser ect.

Yeah Price will not be traded. He's the definition of untouchable. Bay and Marte wouldn't even get Price I don't think.
