| Twins Inquire On Adrian Beltre »
By Steve Adams [July 13, 2008 at 5:17pm CST]
Here's a look back at the biggest stories MLBTR covered for the week of July 6 - 13:
- The Brewers completed a deal for C.C. Sabathia, sending Matt LaPorta and other prospects to Cleveland in return. Sabathia's looked great so far, and LaPorta's already making an impact in the Indians minor league system. Looks good for both teams right now if you ask this guy.
- The Cubs answered their division rival quickly, landing Oakland ace Rich Harden along with Chad Gaudin in exchange for Matt Murton, Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson, and Josh Donaldson. Harden was brilliant in his debut. I think this could be another win-win trade, if Harden stays healthy.
- It was once again made clear that no one has interest in Barry Bonds, even at this juncture of the season. Seems like we've heard this once or twice before...
- It was a long time coming: The Mariners released Richie Sexson. Could the Yankees be interested?
- With likely season-ending injuries to both Eric Byrnes and Moises Alou (possibly career-ending in Alou's case), both the D'Backs and Mets are in the market for corner outfielders. Raul Ibanez should be appealing to both clubs, though the Mariners may not be interested in trading him, Jim Riggleman says. Carlos Beltran voiced his support of acquiring Ibanez. I personally don't see why Seattle wouldn't pull the trigger, but I'm not a Major League GM, I suppose.
- Tim updated both the first base and catcher markets in the Trade Market Series.
- The Twins had internal discussions on Adrian Beltre. A third base upgrade would certainly be nice, but they're not known for making big moves at the deadline. Could Bill Smith change that reputation in his first year as GM?

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Week in Review:
I was grinding my teeth reading that Riggleman interview.
"It would really be interesting to see what we could do if we have the whole group," Riggleman said. "It's been that way since April, and I don't think we really know what we have this year until we get it all out here. You hate to abandon it too quickly."
Is he kidding? We've had our offense together the entire year and its has proven to be one of the worst in baseball. So he thinks everything will click getting back a closer and another starter?
Again there Mr. Riggleman. This offense has been scrambled up in a blender because they can't hit. There has been no injury to any main offensive player. With a completely healthy offense, Riggleman continues to bat Jose Vidro 4th in the order. That's right.. he's our everyday cleanup hitter. But we need to "not give up on them too quickly" and "see what we have". My god, I want to smack him for saying that. We know what we have.. Its one of the worst teams in baseball.
The pitching may bounce back after getting Bedard and Putz back but last I checked neither of those guys can hit.

The Cubs/A's trade was definitely win/win after one start apiece for Harden and Gallagher. Harden was throwing bullets all game long while Gallagher himself hit 97 mph at one point in the A's game -- and held one of the better teams in baseball to two hits. It's only one game, of course, but if this carries through to the end of the season then fans of both teams will be happy with the deal.

Looks like both CC and Harden trades are going to work out real well if their first start(s) are any indication. CC has looked great, and Harden was awesome and touched 98, which should eliminate the loss of velocity questions...
I'll be watching LaPorta and Gallagher closely to see how they do. I think both will be big leaguers for years to come.

Crunchy1 will prob. change his mind tomorrow. He also made it clear that the cubs wouldn't get Harden

Here's my exact quote from that thread:
"As for Harden, I like the idea of a healthy Harden. The thought of unloading the farm just to watch Harden get hurt in August, though, would be the worst possible nightmare. If Beane asks for a premium on Harden, it's best that the Cubs shop around a little."
Obviously Beane was fair and did NOT ask for a premium. At what point exactly have I changed my mind???
I really didn't think the Cubs could land Harden with the likes of Murton and Patterson but they did...so great. Obviously I was wrong on that front (and happily so) but, again, that isn't the same as changing my mind.

crunchy... cubs land is just a big troll who starts arguments with anybody who disagree's with him. On the day of the Sabathia trade, he said it was a good trade, then that it was a bad trade, then that Milwaukee and CHC would play in the NLCS, then that the Brewers would not come within 5 games of the wild card, and that Melvin was an idiot cuz Prince and CC were too fat. He cannot be taken seriously at all. I find it completely possible if his family read some of his posts that they just wouldn't love him anymore, so that should give you an idea of Mr. Cubs Land.

Yes sir! I know the Cubs will win the division and CC won't be doing anything come October. Harden is the man, again good luck next year Brewers!!! Dont say anything about my family please. I find it completely possible that you dont have your head on straight

nrmaxx88, that makes sense now. I remember disagreeing with him about a package he put together for Harden that didn't include Vitters or Gallagher. Instead he had a package that centered around Jose Ceda and included Casey McGhee -- a career minor leaguer who isn't even considered a prospect. I told him that deal wouldn't fly and I couldn't imagine a deal that didn't include Vitters or Gallagher. (I actually thought Beane would insist on Vitters) That must be what he's angry about.
