« Mets Sign Al Reyes | Main | Red Sox Sign Dave Ross »
According to Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle, the Astros claimed infielder Jose Castillo off waivers today. Castillo will be Astros property for '09 as well, if they want him (he's still arbitration-eligible).
The 27 year-old hit .244/.290/.381 in 420 plate appearances for the Giants while seeing time at second base, shortstop, and third base.

With the additions of Wolfe, Hawkins and now Castillo, the Astros have clearly proven that this is their division to lose...
errr... wait a minute ...

Carlos Lee is out of the year, Ty Wigginton was moved to LF and now they don't have anyone that can play 3rd everyday. Not saying that Castillo is awesome, but he's probably better Mark Loretta defensively and Geoff Blum offensively.
It just goes to show how little depth the team has.....

I forgot to add that Matsui is also probably out for the year and that leaves 2nd to be covered by Loretta and Blum (and possibly David Newhan). It's not an awe inspiring move, but it does make sense.

Clearly a stopgap for the bench. This move wasn't made to get better people. Since Matsui and Lee are out Blum and Loretta have to be starters now, leaving 2 bench spots that need to be occupied. Since they had no competent veterans in the minors, and they don't want a prospect wasting on the bench, they figured Castillo would be an easy fix.

Castillo is a perfectly acceptable place holder for a non-contender to ride out the string. He has some sock and can play several defensive positions, so he can play in place of an injured player who is better but you don't want to risk getting hurt.

They still don't have anybody who can play 3b everyday. Castillo is awful.

We're not contending. We don't need somebody who's going to win games for us at this point. We need somebody that can give us 10-15 starts the rest of the season.

Enjoy the double plays, Astros fans...

I like the move for the astros, for the same reasons everyone else keeps mentioning. real cheap bench player. Plus it's a good opportunity for pt for him.
