« Odds and Ends: Kielty, Ellis, Bonds, Poreda | Main | Blue Jays Release Shannon Stewart »
MLB.com's Joseph Santoliquito talked to Pirates manager John Russell, who opined that Phillies lefty Jamie Moyer could pitch til he's 50. When asked about the idea, Moyer wouldn't rule it out.
At the least, Moyer intends to pitch next year. He said:
"I have an obligation here that I plan on upholding next year with the Phillies, so I will be back at 46."
The quote comes as a surprise to me, because I had Moyer listed as a free agent after the season. Perhaps he is referring to a verbal, rather than contractual, agreement in place with the Phillies for '09? The old dog learned a new trick this year, bumping his groundball rate to 44.8% to push down his home run rate. His average fastball velocity is holding steady at 81 mph.

hell yes jamie could pitch until he's 50, the way he throws and the pitches he depends on does not put a huge stress on his arm. i see it possible for him to pitch to 50 and possibly get to that 300 win plateau

I wonder if Hall voters would keep him out if he grinded his way to 300.

hate the phillies. always respected moyer. he could definitely pitch until 50, i'd honestly be surprised if he didn't consider it.
this does bring up an interesting question. is moyer a hof'er if he gets the 300? if not, he would be the first not to get in ( i don't count clemens).

I am sure that the phillies hate you too FranzFerdinand
Would you guys consider David Wells a Hall of Famer? According to Baseball Reference is the most comparable to Moyer.
One thing that may hold Moyer back is that he only made one all star team, although he has pitch pretty well in the playoffs.

He is definitely not a HOF. 300 wins or not, Moyer has been consistently average his entire career. Depending on stupid counting stats like wins is just about the worst way imaginable to measure Moyers impact on the game.

I am not advocating Moyer for the Hall, nor do you have to convince me about the win stat. however, he most certainly has not been average his entire career.

"I wonder if Hall voters would keep him out if he grinded his way to 300."
If they did, I think it would be a joke. Not so much because I think he is better than a lot of guys who seem not to be in the Hall simply because of the 300 win thing (Blyleven and Morris are big examples), but because of the insane longevity.

i'm guessing the main reason you don't view him as a HOFer is because he doesn't put up those insane stats in the strikeout department. not his style. moyer is by definition a control finesse guy. he has a high baseball IQ and can outthink nearly any hitter in the game. i love the guy because he uses smarts rather than high powered pitching.

Moyer could one day hold the career major league record for Home Runs allowed, that is a goal worth striving for. He's got 45 to go to catch Robin Roberts. Everyone ahead of Moyer on the list is a HOF'er.
