« Reds Wanted Spilborghs For Fogg | Main | Odds and Ends: McLouth, Doumit, Eyre, Bradley »
Rafael Furcal's agent, Paul Kinzer, says the Dodgers are his client's first choice and he hopes to re-sign before the free agent signing period begins.
Furcal was off to an incredible start this year until a back injury sidelined him in May. Before the injury, I was predicting $75MM over five years. Now we're probably looking at $12MM per year for two or three years, maybe with incentives involved. It only takes one maverick team to defy expectations, though. Magglio Ordonez got five guaranteed years following experimental knee surgery, though the Tigers received an opt-out clause in case that injury re-occurred.
If Furcal re-signs, the free agent shortstop market will be bleak. Orlando Cabrera will be the top guy.

Another blow to the Blue Jays chances to compete. They can't even throw money at the problem to sign a SS. Who will it be next year? Scutaro? Ew.

Which is great for a team who wants to move a mediocre shortstop in the offseason...less choices on the FA market means more demand for SS via trade.

Great news for my O's!!! Another year of Alex Cintron! Sweet. Hey TB...any chance you still want to move that Brignac kid?! Please?

Anyone want Yuniesky Betancourt? He's signed through 2012 at around 3M per year.

In some ways, I actually think Furcal's injury improved his chances of remaining with the Dodgers. It decreased the price and made the Dodgers realize just how much he means to the success of that team.
As for Betancourt, I don't see how he represents all that much value. He is a good defensive player, but he has little power, little speed, no patience and doesn't hit for a high enough average to make up for the lack of patience. He is pretty much on par with Angel Berroa.
