Giants To Sign First Round Pick Posey

According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, the Giants have agreed to a $7.5MM Major League deal for top draft pick Buster Posey.  Baggarly's sources call it a "done deal."  The Giants are drawing much praise for their draft efforts this year.

I'm surprised he got more than Beckham, plus a major league deal. It was good for the Giants to sign him, though.

I have been trying to find out this answer but can not, so can someone help. WHat is the difference between a mnijor league contract and a minor league contract?

not 100% sure, but it means Posey would have to be on the 25-man roster or been on the 25-man roster by a certain time; if he is not the contract is nullified by said time

The Giants had a good draft, but I DO think it was a bit overrated. While they improved the depth of their farm system considerably- particularly with their mid-rounders- all the talk of their first five is overblown. Maybe Posey will turn into a star, but everything I've read about him suggests this is not Matt Wieters. It sounds like he's a strong defensive presence and good hitter who should move quickly, but who doesn't profile as a star. In fact, I think they've got a better bet, offensively, already on the farm in Sandoval. Gillespie has a nice bat, but doesn't strike me a guy with massive upside either. Granted, there's something to be said for high-probability, polished players who can and likely will play at the big league level. I just tend to like guys with higher ceilings (then again, this wasn't a great draft for that). Furthermore, I hate Kieschnick and Crawford, who both seem to have more name than game.

Barnes, Ronick, Eifel, and Jarvis all have a chance to contribute nicely and were excellent second day picks. I just think that folks got a little too worked up over San Fran's draft simply because they recognized a lot of names from the college ranks. These players, however, often have less potential than the anonymous high schooler with the projectable body and 90 MPH fastball.

It'll still be a great class if Posey can somehow turn into the second coming of Wieters, but I'm not convinced that will happen. He's good, but if the scouting reports are right, greatness eludes him. For $7.5 million, let's hope I'm wrong.

Damn...just read the report. They got everybody signed. Busy day in the bay. I might not be as high on their draft as some, but I should note that I still thought it was a GOOD draft and it's clear that the team is serious about returning to contention with the slew of signings. Didn't think they'd get them all done, but Posey, Gillespie, Kieschnick, and Crawford are all in the fold now. Impressive.

Hey Milehigh78, I'm glad that becuase a player doesn't "Strike you" to have much upside, he isn't going to be good. Your a joke, the Giants draft was overated. Because you hate Kieschnick and Crawford. Are you a Rockies fan? Is that why you hate the Giants draft so much huh? Shut up.
GREAT 2 DAYS FOR GIANTS BASEBALL.

Juan Perez signed too, and Verdugo a little ways back. Great draft.

Joe505-

Thought that post might get some flack, but...wow. You got some anger management issues (and some grammatical ones too: 'Your a joke' Um, 3rd grade pal...it's you're a joke, joining 'you' and 'are.' Love it when idiots try to knock me).

To answer YOUR question, no, I am not a Rockies fan. Nor am I a fan of any NL West team that might skew my judgment with regard to the Giants' draft (although I'm not sure why you chose the Rockies; thought the Dodgers were your big rival). YOU'RE right about one thing: it doesn't matter, particularly, whether someone 'strikes me' as a good player or not. It's simply an opinion. I believe it to be an informed opinion, but YOU'RE welcome to take it with a grain of salt. Still, this site is all about opinionated discussion. Why begrudge me my take on this matter? Someone a little insecure about his team's selections?

And yes, I hate Kieschnick and Crawford- a pair of 'names' who never lived up to their considerable potential in college and fell in the draft as a result. Those types NEVER seem to do well. Further still, Crawford has shown himself to be a very poor wood-bat hitter in the Cape and elsewhere. I would venture to say he's going to be a bust. Kieschnick has power, so I'll give him a chance, despite my reservations.

I'm sorry you don't like what I have to say, but your childish reaction was uncalled for...and pretty pathetic. You seem very happy with YOUR team's picks, so instead of concerning yourself with what 'strikes me,' just enjoy the moment. You guys haven't had many this year.

Beside which, I didn't say I hated your draft. I said that I thought it was overrated. There was a lot of hype surrounding the Giants' picks following the first day and I thought that it was largely the product of familiarity: most of said selections were college guys from major programs. I was actually very impressed with what Sabean and Co. did on the second day of the draft...which I mentioned in my post.

So, in summary: learn to read, learn to write, grow a pair, and SHUT THE HELL UP!!! Otherwise the next thing that 'strikes me,' will be an urge to strike you.
