Huff, Millar, Payton Clear Waivers

According to Dan Connolly and Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, four Orioles players have cleared waivers: Aubrey Huff, Jay Payton, Kevin Millar, and Jamie Walker.  Walker we already knew about.  The Orioles can now trade any of the four to any team.

I had guessed that Huff would not clear waivers, on account of his .910 OPS (10th in the AL).  However, the $10.1MM owed to Huff through '09 proved too much for the other 29 teams.  His limited defensive abilities probably also played a role.

The Sun also mentioned that George Sherrill was claimed by an AL team and pulled back, which was expected.

I'm suprised no one claimed Huff as well, even considering his paycheck for next year. Hopefully, since he has cleared, someone will work out a trade. The Orioles have very little need for a player like Huff next year, and I would much prefer to get a prospect or two for him. Then again, without him in the line-up, unless we sign a Teix or a Dunn, once again it's just Markakis and B-Rob as the proven commodities. Certainly Weiters and Jones will have positive contributions, but we won't have the masher Huff has proven to be this year (emphasis on THIS year).

HUFF AND WALKER TO THE METS

HUFF TO THE CUBS! The mets? are they in the playoff race? FYI the two division leaders from the NL West and NL East would be in 3rd place in the NL Centeral!

GO CUBBIES-they are pulling away!

Millar to the Red Sox for cash. love to see him back with us for alittle while, love his attitude, wed certainly have the nicest, biggest character backup first baseman.

*basemen

All three of these guys have Tampa Bay written all over them.

If the O's could eat some salary, I could see the Rays giving up a nice prospect for Huff, which could really help out the O's in the long run.

"HUFF TO THE CUBS! The mets? are they in the playoff race?"

Uhm...Mets are currently in 1st place? I would not want to face Johan, Pedro, Maine, and Perez in a 5 game series.

Huff makes sense for the Mets as I am not sure Daniel Murphy is the guy you want out there everyday.

I don't see Walker going to a contender unless they REALLY need help.

Jay Payton could he be a fill in for Carl Crawford???

I would send the cubs up aganist the mets rotation. Would want to face the Cubs:
1) Zambrano- 12-5 3.22 era
2) Dempster- 13-5 2.92 era
3) Harden- 7-2 2.17 era

-with the bullpen of the cubs..its no contest!

cubs are the best in the National League.

and our offense is WAY better dont get started on that

Playoff time is a whole different story. Talk to the 116 Wins of the Seattle Mariners managed by Lou Pinella. Cubs are a good team, but lets see them string together a few on the road (giving credit to their recent sweep of the Braves)

Let them string a few on the road??? After the Cubs dropped two close games to the 'Stros in late July (2-1/4-1)the Cubs took the final game 9-0. After that the Cubs had 2 road series against the Brewers (4 games) and the Braves(3 games) both sweeps. What is more amazing is that Cubs outscored the Brew Crew 31-11 and the Braves 29-9. So the "string" right now is 8 straight road wins outscoring the opponent 69-20.

The Phillies could really use Huff right now. Their offense is really struggling right now and they just dropped below the Mets.

Huff could be used in RF and off the bench for the Phillies.

Sep 5 - end @ CIN, @ STL, @ HOU vs MIL, vs STL, @ NYM, @ MIL.

Like I said, every team gets hot, this ain't the place for this discussion so it ends here. I give the Cubs credit, but vs the junior circuit its not too difficult to string a run together.

The posts I'm seeing are a good indication that Huff could really be the gem of the waiver-wire this year. He really has been incredible, but I agree with dorfmac that the O's would probably be better off leveraging his excellent season for a legit prospect or two. Not sure if he makes as much sense in the NL, though, guys. While Huff is fairly versatile defensively, it's versatility without a ton of...um...quality. He can PLAY 3B, LF, maybe RF and 1B, but let's be honest...he doesn't play them WELL. You'd like to see a DH hole just in case.

I like the idea of the Rays, though I'm not sure if that is likely to happen. (BTW- Walker has been better of late...though I know what you mean) If Andy Mac is willing to eat a significant chunk of Huff's '09 salary- which he should- and TB is willing to part with Brignac (who seems poorly positioned between Bartlett and Beckham), I definitely think something could- or at least should- be worked out.

Still, the question remains...why wait so long? For all the good he's done so far, McPhail really seemed to botch the trade deadline and his nonchalant attitude toward dealing any of his biggest trade chips leaves me...less than optimistic that he will utilize this opportunity or once again look a gift horse in the mouth. For a team in rebuilding mode, he hasn't been particularly eager to...you know...rebuild. Huff is not the future. As good as he is now, we're still two or three years away from contending. And that's WITH good decisions like dealing pricey veterans for cheap young talent.

As one of the league's leaders in a multitude of categories, Huff could do wonders for a less stable contender (the Cubs are pretty much set on offense, no?). McPhail wasted the trade deadline; let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.

NOTE: the lone caveat being...it's got to be worth it. Obviously we'll need to eat a big part of the contract (or else he would've just been claimed), which in this case is good, because it justifies the inclusion of prospects. Assuming a trade partner can be found willing to part with a young player or two with enough potential to make a deal worth the Orioles basically paying for an All Star (production-wise; I know he wasn't on the team) to play for someone else.

I'd also be down with Millar back to Boston. Would be a nice story and could save the O's some cash (and maybe a prospect? I really like Chris Carter and it isn't like he's EVER going to play for you guys, so whad'ya say?). All bets are off if- by some chance- Millar somehow qualifies as a Type B guy (HIGHLY unlikely, but...)

I'm telling you, though, with what the Rays and O's need, respectively, those two really need to talk. Brignac would get an extended, low-pressure shot in the O's lineup as their SS of the future (which he is surely not in TB after taking Beckham), while the Birds have a former Ray (he's familiar with the team, area, and even some of the guys you gotta figure) having an awesome year who could keep things rolling in Tampa while they deal with the injuries and help in the playoffs. Throw in Walker or Payton for free (as in, we pay their contract) and it's win-win. I hope it isn't one of those 'I don't want to trade in-division' things. Ugh. Like the O's can afford to think about crap like that?! It's so perfect, it'll never happen. But it should.
