Jose Castillo Designated

According to Chris Haft of MLB.com, the Giants designated third baseman Jose Castillo for assignment today to make room for rookie Ryan Rohlinger.

Castillo, 27, hit .244/.290/.381 in 394 plate appearances.  He earned $650K for his efforts.  Castillo can play second base as well, but he hasn't had a good month this year outside of May.  Andrew Baggarly says the Castillo signing helped the Giants save face, but it was time to move on.

Don't really understand the logic behind this, but oh well, it is Sabean, so we'll just have to sit back and watch.

The Giants have clearly bought into the win now theory. LOL Seriously though, this will probably end up improving their run scoring ability for the rest of the season.

lol i agree ari. i dont understand this at all. the team avg is .254.... lol. makes no sense at all. hes a good second basemen defensively. he'll get picked up. he should just be happy to get out of an awful franchise that should have kept bonds to sell tickets.

It makes complete sense to me. They called up Pablo Sandoval and Travis Ishikawa as well, both of whom have been tearing it up in the minors. Rohlinger was considered a possibility for opening day starter in spring training as well, because he seemed to hit a homer everytime he got called into a game.

If you're a Giants fan, this is a happy day. Sandoval or Ishikawa will make their call-up known. Maybe both of them will get hot. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised if Aurillia wasn't traded now, to give these guys even more ABs. He'd fit in nicely in Boston, with Lowell banged up.

Anyone else think this has Twins written all over it?

How does this NOT make sense? Jose Castillo is probably one of the worst 10-15 everyday players...he's certainly one of the WORST everyday 3b. He really doesn't do anything well. And, most of all, he has no future with a team that is trying to figure out their future. Rohlinger probably isn't the long-term answer, but at least he has a legit chance to be some sort of contributor, while playing better defense and taking some more walks. Castillo has been a joke from the day they signed him.

Jose Castillo is not a very good fielder at 2nd or 3rd. This guy can't cut it on the Pirates, Marlins and Giants. He horrendous to watch everyday. If the Twins pick him, they're idiots. Finally, Sabean made a good move here (plus adding Travis and Pablo). Too bad it took him 4 months.

The Management: I'm expecting Aurilia to be gone now, Winn possibly.

Walker/Taschner could be claimed by the Mets; I could see that happening.

Huh?

Whats the point of releasing the 27 YO guy who costs you absolutely nothing that can play any position on the field you ask him to while keeping the 41 YO Vizquel who is limited to short, hitting even worse in his 6-ish ABs a week?

I love Little-O, but he is the one who should have received this news. Castillo should have been kept just incase the team needs him as a stop-gap somewhere for the 09 season...

nostocksjustbonds,

You got the wrong Castillo, this one's never played for the Marlins.....

oops, my bad. I just realized he was a ST invite for the Marlins....

Yeah, he played for the Marlins during spring training, but he's such a bad player and he has such a bad attitude about limited playing time that the Marlins simply released him before spring training was even over.

DarkStar,

I think Omar's still in San Fran because he's a legend and you don't kick one out the door mid-season. He's been hitting decently since the break, and he's getting paid to teach Burriss and Ochoa as much as anything else.

Melonis Rex,

Oh please oh please let the Met's take T-Walker.

Darin, never doubt me on this stuff.

.105/.190/.105 in his last 10 games...

Besides, it was rumored he might retire earlier in the year anyway ~ he could probably be talked into doing so now and instead staying on as a coach of somekind to continue helping with the kids or something. Castillo can fill in at 2nd, 3rd, or Short. He’s only 27 YO, costs nothing in the way of cash and atleast will still be physically able to play next year. The same cant be said about Little-O, and because of that then I think this choice makes itself.

I just keep the guy who can help me in multiple ways now that I have an option of keeping around next year if I need him, not the guy who can hardly help at all now and is on his way out anyway. Omar might be a legend (which he is, for Cleveland ~ not SF. But whatever...), but even legends see their times come to an end eventually. That’s why I say “huh?” to this move…

Omar makes significantly more money and the Giants have zero chance at making it anywhere. Hence, they want to get something out of their investment.

I was mainly refering to bringing up Sandolvar so soon. I mean he has been tearing it up, and I'm pulling for him, but this is a classic move by the giants to try and speed up the rebuilding process, wrong thing and it could screw him up. This is what they did with Dan Ortmier in 2005, he was a great hitter in the minors, then they moved him from AA right up to the bigs and BOOM!! he fell apart. I don't want to see that happen to another could-be-very-good prospect. That's the difference between the giants and other teams that are rebuilding. The A's and O's for example, they're taking their time getting back to being very good, while the giants are trying to get good again for next year. It's not gonna happen for them. Then do I have to bring them up, the Rays. Waited a decade to get good, now look. That was the main point of what I said earlier.

"This is what they did with Dan Ortmier in 2005, he was a great hitter in the minors"

Dan Ortmeier was never a great hitter in the minors. He was a pretty good hitter in the minors that they didn't allow to develop into a pretty good hitter in the majors.

I agree with AA. I think, though, that Rohlinger was brought a bit prematurely...but maybe he proves me wrong. Sandoval and Ishikawa, I think, deserve to be in the majors after the years they have put up in the upper levels of the minors.

Sandoval's line of .350/.394/.578 in 448 PA's definitely warrants a call up...later days Castillo, gald we hardly knew ya!

Vizquel, post AS game: 263 avg. Pre AS game: 159.

I don't think Castillo can "help me in multiple ways," Dark Star. And though I'll agree Omar's more expensive, I think the Giants are just handling him as something other than an expendable stop-gap, which is what Castillo always was.

Castillo was average defensively, below average at the plate, and slow. In addition he really hasn't shown potential for improvement. He's basically Aurillia with no redeeming qualities.

Omar is a great person and someone who has loads of experience which benefits our youngsters, and Ochoa and Burriss are getting enough time. Plus he's still great defensively.

Imagine if the giants would have signed mcpherson for next to nothing in the begining of the year. Everyone screamed it as loud as possible but sabean must have felt castillo was a better option. Dallas would have finished the seasin with 20+ bombs and would have given giants fans something to look forward to. SABEAN I HATE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

Well this guy blows, but he's a better option at third against lefties than Eric Bruntlett. So the Phillies should kick the tires at least

Any indication whether they would put Aurilia on waivers? I'd prefer him in that same role with Feliz questionable

“Omar makes significantly more money and the Giants have zero chance at making it anywhere. Hence, they want to get something out of their investment.”

…Ahh yes, the old “keep the guy you have no real use for since youre paying him a lot of money, and instead dump the guy that might come in handy off the bench” theory. Absolutely brilliant…

Vizquel is done, he provides nothing at at the plate anymore. His “post AS” numbers are because of a 5 day span (and really only 2 games), otherwise he has been just as miserable. He’s at the point that he’s only getting a handful of ABs a week, and his lack of flexibility on the playing field means he holds no real value to the team. The only thing he can bring is his possibly his presence, a presence he would still hold if he was kept as some type of coach.

Aurilia is pretty much in the same boat. Castillo being able to replace both those players means he should have been the last one of the 3 to be cut in my eyes. Castillo can play Aurilia’s position, he can play Omar’s position and he can play 2B on top of it. Sure, he sucks ~ but its not like the other two arent just as bad to even worse. So when you have 3 guys who suck at their job, you keep the one who provides the most flexibility and is most likely to be around longer; that’s just a no-brainer in my eyes…

Dark star I get what your saying. And the Cult of Omar is rather strong here. Over all he has earned it so I keep my grumbling to a minim. As for Aurillia and Castillo well Rich has been pretty good ( maybe should say has not stunk badly) and plays a lot of the same positions. Joe Castle has not been able to draw a walk since before the All Starr break and posted a 321/384 June & 269/338 July ( obp/slg).

Management also floated the idea that Castillo needed to get a prolonged look at second. That scared the crap out of me. I would rather they sort though Ochoa, Burris, Denker, Frandsen etc. I think the odds are better they will find something useful in that pile. And there is very little way Aurilia body could absorb enough innings to deter that sorting from happening. Castle could.
