« Odds and Ends: Elias, Izzy, Silva, Colletti | Main | Astros Sign Jose Castillo »
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets have signed reliever Al Reyes. He's earning $2.3MM this year, most of which the Rays are covering.
Reyes, 38, posted a 4.37 ERA in 22.2 innings this year along with decent peripheral stats. Reyes missed time this year with biceps tendinitis and a shoulder impingement, and also made the news for an April bar fight. Solid signing for the Mets; it's not hard to envision Reyes picking up a few saves.

I'm glad they did this. He's had success as a closer before and he can't be any worse than the current guys they have.

Its nice getting some fresh blood in Ayala and Reyes (now we have 3 Reyes'), because they haven't been around for the collapse last year, or the ineptitude recently, and aren't dealing with the pressure of knowing their poor performances will be under a microscope every night. It can't be easy for the same guys to go back out there every day knowing how bad they have been as a unit, and having the pressure on them to try to and stop it. Ayala got out of a big jam last night stranding inherited runners on 1st and 3rd, and he was throwing hard with movement, in the low to mid 90's. Love these 2 pickups. They are not bad options and they got them for nothing, when it would have cost a top prospect or more to get a guy a month ago who might or might not have been better.

Doesn't Reyes have a cool nickname too?
Like , but in Spanish?
He's effective, particularly when he has a good OF behind him (fly ball pitcher if I recall correctly)

How many Reyes are there in MLB? Probably the most common baseball last name. That and Gonzalez.
But still, good pickup for the Mets.

Uh, hello? Pat Gillick? Doy uo watch the waiver wire?! Are you aware that you can block these trades for the Mets you idiot!!?!? The one category that Phils clearly dominate the Mets is the bullpen and we're sitting here watching relief help come to them through the waivier wire while we sit behidn them in the standings? Do I need a better understanding of the waivier wire or is it Phils front office who needs some Baseball 101?

i'm pretty sure no one put a claim in for reyes and he was dfa'd so he was free for all teams to sign.
apparently the phillies were too busy patting themselves on the back for beating the nats to notice?
