Molony's Latest: Fuentes, Red Sox, White Sox

Here's the latest from MLB.com's Jim Molony.

  • The Red Sox are eyeing Rockies closer Brian Fuentes, though Ken Rosenthal has said Fuentes cannot be traded this month.  Plus, the Rockies still intend to make a playoff run in the weak NL West.
  • The Red Sox and White Sox had scouts at Wednesday night's Astros-Reds game.  Roy Oswalt pitched that one, but he won't be traded.  The Reds still have some good trade candidates in the bullpen (David Weathers has cleared waivers, Jeremy Affeldt is a free agent after the season).

Could it be interest in Josh Fogg ?

Someone needs to tell the Rockies that they aren't going to be able to win 20 some odd games in a row every September.

I hope it isn't interest in Fogg. The Reds need him as a starter so they can find wiggle room as the young pitchers move closer and closer to maxing out their innings pitched.

Sox fans, would you take Fuentes and Taveras for Coco and a decent pitching prospect?

Trust me Prog, you dont want Crisp. If you want any outfielder it would be Ellsbury. He is 1 million times better!

White sox scouts were at that game...why? I can only see it being Oswalt just because of the fact they need a SP for next year.

yeah, but you cant have ellsbury, thats been very much established.

Beckett just hit the DL, the scouting would be for a starter

Well then I guess the Red Sox aren't getting Fuentes!

LOL. I'd definately prefer ellbury, but I know the unlikely hood of that. I'd take Crisp, especially if the moneybags in Sox ownership would pay some of his salary. I'd still want a good pitching prospect on top of it.

For Ellsbury instead of Coco I'd throw in someone like Seth Smith or Jeff Baker.

Hey if that's what you want... all Im saying is that I think you're giving up too much and getting back too little.

It depends. I think with Crisp in center we'd look pretty good. It would also protect a little bit if Holliday left.

I'd be comfortable with an outfield of either Holliday, Spilborghs, Hawpe OR Spilly, Coco, Hawpe.

Admittedly I haven't followed Coco as closely since he left Cleveland, but I really liked his game then. If he could bring that kind of aggressiveness to the leadoff position on the Rox I think that might look really nice.

"Hey if that's what you want... all Im saying is that I think you're giving up too much and getting back too little."

...Who would pay more than that though? Neither would be eligible to be on the postseason roster, making them kind of worthless for a contender that is almost certainly making the playoffs already. Taveras is horrible anyway, and it would really be Fuentes for Crisp + Pitching Prospect ~ that’s better than anything else you would get at this point… Plus, Crisp being removed from Boston and placed in hitter-friendly Colorado could be a resurrection waiting to happen. If I was the Rockies, I would do it instead of just letting Fuentes walk…

"Neither would be eligible to be on the postseason roster, making them kind of worthless for a contender that is almost certainly making the playoffs already."

Actually teams have until this Monday to claim a player and have him be eligible for the postseason roster, so actually, in all reality, Fuentes is worth more than that because he can be a deciding factor between a World Series contender and a World Series winner. If you actually had all your information correct you would have known that.

"If I was the Rockies, I would do it instead of just letting Fuentes walk…"

It would be in the best interest for the Rox to keep Fuentes and get draft picks at the end of the year or even possibly try to resign him, which I think will most likely not happen because they will probably be outbid, but hey, it may be worth the risk, you never know. If you had taken a look at the standings any time recently you would have seen that the Rox are only 6 games back and that neither team ahead of them (the D'Backs or the Dodgers) is running away with the division. So, in all reality, basically all the Rox have to do is get back over .500 and stay there until the end of the season and they will have a good if not great chance to win the division. Last year they were 6 1/2 games back at this point in the season and still came back to make the playoffs and reach the world series. Im starting to wonder if your even a true fan or if you just recently decided to have an interest in baseball.

…Actually, Fuentes will not clear waivers by the 1st so he would not be able to be traded in time to make the postseason roster. That information can be found here:
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8496042/Rockies-won't-be-able-to-deal-Fuentes-by-deadline?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=49 (IE, the Link Tim provided in the original post)
Specifically, it says:
“If the Rockies want to trade closer Brian Fuentes, it will not be possible for them to do it before the September 1 deadline for setting postseason rosters.”

Now, since Fuentes can not be put back on waivers until Friday, the deadline being Sunday and the waiver a 3 day process; it is impossible for Boston to make a claim and deal before the deadline ~ other teams have up until Monday to place a claim and all but one or two teams will have a better waiver priority than the RedSox do.

SH*T... forgot he was on the bereavement, that changes everything. However, that does prove my point and makes it more doubtful that the Rox will trade him because there still is a great chance that they could win their division and possibly resign Fuentes.

Yes, its doubtful they will trade him ~ but it would be stupid to pass up a package of Crisp + “decent pitching prospect” for a player they most likely lose and can easily replace from within anyway. They really screwed up when they didn’t trade him (and others) at the deadline though, and screwed up again by waiting till the last minute to put anyone on waivers.

And they currently look like they might stand a slight chance of sneaking into the postseason solely because Arz is on a losing streak at the same time they managed to win a couple. But no, they wont win the division, and actually have a much, much, much better chance of finishing 4th than 1st ~ Playing for this year is just asinine, when youre behind 2 stronger teams, sit more than 6 games back and are 9 games under .500 overall its time to think about 2009.

"...when youre behind 2 stronger teams, sit more than 6 games back and are 9 games under .500 overall its time to think about 2009."

So if you told the Rox that last year when they were 6 1/2 GM back at this point in the season they should just give up because there is no chance of catching the division leader would they have listened? NO... but people were telling them that, but what did they do? They won 20 of their last 21 took that momentum into the postseason and made it all the way to the world series. Yes they were swept out of the WS by the Sox but to them (as much as they wanted to win) it was worth it because they did the impossible and proved everyone wrong so to tell a team they should give up on their year with a month left, playing in the worst division in baseball is ridiculous. With the top 2 teams playing in a series against each other and both have losing streaks (although the D'Backs won last night to end theirs but the Dodgers have now lost 8 in a row) and you're asking them to give up their best pitcher for an overated outfielder (when their outfield is already stocked) and a good pitching prospect. Not gonna happen because they can still win and possibly go deep into the postseason.

But how often do teams win 20 of their last 21? How often does the same team do it 2 years in a row? If the Rox made this year's trade deadline decisions based on last season's improbable run, they are indeed asinine.

I know... it's rare to win 20 out of 21, but they dont have to win 20 out of 21, they just have to play stellar baseball for the last month of the season. We saw thr Rox do that earlier this year when Holliday was on fire, and if they were to do something like that again and if the Dodgers and D'Backs continue to play .500 or lower the Rox should be leading the division at season's end. I mean this last week we saw Cleveland put together a 10 game winning streak so it is possible for the Rox to do similar.

Huh? You seriously think they will just go on some win streak and the D-Backs AND Dodgers will start losing enough games to let them sneak in? Wow…

What you apparently fail to grasp is this that last year the team was already good and just played farther above their head down the stretch; this time they suck and you want them to somehow become good? Last year they didn’t even win the division, they ended up tied for the WildCard. And at this time last year, this is what the NL-West standings looked like:

SDP ~ 74-60 (.552)
ARZ ~ 75-61 (.551)
LAD ~ 70-64 (.522)
COL ~ 69-65 (.515)
SFG ~ 62-73 (.459)

…You can see, that’s 5 games out and 4 games above .500. What happened is they go 21-8 (.724) while SD goes 15-14 (.517) just to make up 5 games and Tie for the WC! If they want to make up the 6 they currently sit at, they will need to go on a similar .725-ish W% run, while Arz AND LA both play about 500-ish ball. Its statistically less than a 10% chance here ~ it isnt going to happen…

You want to know what the difference between us is... Yor a stats guy with all your 10%, scouting reports, etc. and Im a reality guy. Maybe you never played baseball so you dont understand the nature of the game and what the players go through but I am, Ive played ball all my life so I understand the "reality" aspect. That's why well never agree!

Yeah, your point = “I think he can be great because I want him to be great”
My point = “you cant be great when you don’t have anything resembling actual talent”

…but I guess it’s the difference between a rah-rah team fan and a realistic mind…

oops ~ that was wrong post. This is the one for here:

Huh? “Reality” is the Rockies will go 20-8 while the Dodgers and DBacks play less than .500 ball?

I played a ton of baseball for most of my life and still get in on softball leagues every so often ~ and because of that, I know that teams don’t generally play above their heads while other teams fall on their face just because you want it to happen… I guess it somehow works like that for you though…

Aha! Excellent!

"...I know that teams don’t generally play above their heads while other teams fall on their face just because you want it to happen…"

Im not saying it's gonna happen because I want it to happen, Im saying it MIGHT happen because anything is possible in baseball (and you of all people should know that with all your stats) which is why it is the greatest game. That's my point. PERIOD. END OF STORY!

"PERIOD. END OF STORY!"

Ah, c'mon guys, keep the battle going!!!

P.S. The Rox are done for the year. Even if they were to win their division, there's no way in hell they would be able to get past possible competitors like the Cubs, Brewers, Mets, Phillies, etc. in the Playoffs. Plan for next year, Rockies.
