Here are a few tidbits from around the 'Net this morning.
- Vlad Guerrero wants to spend the rest of his days with the Angels. The question is, will the Halos pony up for a deal for the slugger's latter years? They hold a $15 million club option ($3 million buyout) for next year, Vlad's age-33 season. Will they work out an extension this off-season, or will they let Future Vlad and Future Reagins figure it out after '09?
- Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe mentions a player who wouldn't mind being traded: Gary Sheffield. The 39-year-old hasn't enjoyed his time at DH, saying that he needs to play the field to be a vocal leader. A few obstacles stand in the way, including his limited no-trade clause, his chronically ailing shoulder, and the $19 million owed to him over the next two years. He'd easily clear waivers, though, and might have already. Tampa Bay, anyone?
- The Rockies have DFA'd Kip Wells to make room for Livan Hernandez. Wells had a 5.27 ERA over 27.1 innings for the Rockies.
- Looks like Tim Lincecum is content going with year to year contracts, according to his agent. The Giants have a monopoly on his services through the 2013 season.
- With Carlos Lee likely out for the season, Richard Justice urges the Astros to sign Barry Bonds.
- With the August 15th draftee signing deadling approaching, the Pirates have a major league deal on the table for first round pick Pedro Alvarez.
would Sheffield be a good fit for the Mets?

would anyone really want sheffield if detroit didn't pay most of his salary?
the guy has a 706 OPS. a slugger slugging 380. he's 39 and deteriorating.
so, to recap, slugger who's not slugging, making $19m over the next two years, old, falling apart.
sounds more like the drays of old instead of the rays of today.

I sure hope the Mets aren't interested in Sheffield. Church begins a rehab assignment soon, and Tatis is making his bid for comeback player of the year.
Don't forget about Dan Murphy, who is playing great right now. Something like 10-20 to start his MLB career.

I would think the Angels could resign Guerrero to whatever he wants. It helps that he's not the kind of guy who's going to chase the biggest contract. Angels may also think about signing Teixeira, they have options on Anderson and Lackey, and Rodriguez and Garland are free agents. $9M for Lackey is the only no-brainer.
One thing the Angels may consider: they've won four divisions in five seasons with Guerrero, assuming they've won it this season. But they're only 4-12 in the post season with Vlad, where he's hit .183/.258/.233 in 60 at-bats.

The major league deal option on the table sounds like an offer of last resort. If Alvarez would sign, then it could stunt his development by rushing his clock and limiting the Pirates' options. He is a college player and he is expected to move fast so it's not as big of a gamble..but it is a gamble. Say, for instance, if he gets injured at any point, it makes it less likely he'll be ready once he hits the majors.

"Angels may also think about signing Teixeira, they have options on Anderson and Lackey, and Rodriguez and Garland are free agents. $9M for Lackey is the only no-brainer."
Declining Garret Anderson's option definately has to be a no-brainer as well. They already have Guerrero, Hunter, Matthews, Rivera and Willits on the books for next season, there is no need for Anderson. The guy doesn't take enough walks and doesn't have enough power to justify it. There is just no way the guy is worth anything near $11M at this point ($14M option, $3M buyout). His numbers only look alright now because the guy has been on a tear recently, essentially the guy has been raking since the end of July. Now maybe if he plays this way the rest of the year, then the Angels will consider it, but honestly I gotta think there's a better way to use that money when they have their OF so set already.
"I sure hope the Mets aren't interested in Sheffield. Church begins a rehab assignment soon, and Tatis is making his bid for comeback player of the year."
Fernando Tatis has been a very nice revelation, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's at least solid through the rest of the season. But honestly, I've read in multiple places that the odds of Church making a serious impact on this team this season is highly unlikely. Coming back from post-concussion syndrome and trying to hit a 95 MPH fastball is extremely difficult. Look at how look it took Koskie to even try to make a serious comeback. I wouldn't put much faith in Church for '08.
Oh and by the way, since coming off the DL, Lastings Milledge has gotten a hit in 11 of his last 12 games, including a triple and four home runs. Just sayin..
