« Braves Sign Elmer Dessens | Main | Heyman Predicts '09 Options »
According to George King of the New York Post, the Yankees placed oft-injured starter Carl Pavano on waivers. He will almost certainly clear, but the Yankees might be able to trade him if they assume most of the $3.8MM remaining on his contract. King speculates on the Mets as a fit.

The Mets don't want another overpaid broken down arm.

Pavano would be a better option to take over Maine's spot in the rotation than Niese or someone in AAA. He's at least been in a playoff race (albeit 5 years ago). Wouldn't be bad but I doubt the Mets will do it because of all the negativity around Pavano.

I have no problem at all with the Mets putting in a claim. Niese is intriguing, but this is a tight division race and Pavano is more or less a sure thing when healthy.
Who cares about the negativity? I'd rather the Mets play October baseball than have a good "image" from the golf course. I say pull the trigger!

You're in serious trouble if Carl Pavano is better than any internal option.
It's hard to believe he would be.

shocker, joel "the yankee shill" wants the mets to bail the yankees out. you must be out of your mind to believe carl pavano has any place on the mets. let the yankee titanic go down with all hands on board.

As long as the Yankees eat at least half his remaining contract (Including the Buyout), and it doesn't cost a significant prospect, I would be fine with taking him on honestly.
I like Niese, but given the choice between him or a proven veteran to pitch crucial games down the stretch and it's a no-brainer in my mind. I'd take Pavano to be the #5 after Santana, Perez, Pelfrey, and Martinez. If you'd like to still see Niese, you can use him to monitor Pelfrey's innings with a spot start or two.
Sure, he's usually hurt, but he's healthy now and you're only asking him to stay healthy for a month. Seems like a low-risk, moderate-reward type gamble.

The Mutts are trying anybody and everybody, I guess they can't grow any of their own players. Maybe Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan will come out of retirement to help the Mutts.
Go Yanks

Actually George King wrote the article, not Joel Sherman. I made a mistake initially.

Well, I am a yanks fan and I hate Pavano for what he did. He is always injured but mostly his attitude is a problem. However, the Yanks wouldn't eat most of the contract including the buyout and then not receive anything in return. Honestly, the starts he might give this year, even just two or three more are worth more I think then a prospect that probably would not even be a backup. Then again, Pavano is useless but if the Mets put in a claim, the Yanks would just dump the rest of the contract adn the Mets can't say no so no team in their right mind would put in a claim because the Yanks don't have to trade, they can dump the contract.

Haha Mutts, i get it, its because theyre so multicultural right?
And what is this cant grow our own players? Last time i checked, Nick Evans, Daniel Murphy, Argenis Reyes, David Wright, Jose Reyes and Mike Pelfrey were contributing a whole lot more to the first place Mets then Cano, Melky and Generation Ghey are in the Bronx.
And weve had the same 5 man rotation for most of the year, instead of throwing **** at the wall and seeing what sticks (ponson, rasner, giese)
Maybe you should watch Baseball a little closer, crazyman.

and the new york mets are in first place
look, yanks won 26, but 19 came before the mets were even a team, if a team was there for 105 years, they would win at least 10-15 titles, especially with horrible pitching

your saying your farm is better
look at what nick evans, daniel murphy with the clutch hit against the phils, MY GUY BIG PELF mike pelfrey with 13 wins, and waiting in the wings, the teenage hitting machine fanannnnndo maatinez, and jonathon niese, and we had john maine
now i wanna hear your bums
GENERATION GAYYYYYYYY
phil hughes, yes 0-4 and injured to boot
ian kennedy- SUCKS SUCKS can yu say bust
joba is good but he is injured
and sister christian, BRETT GARDNER? what did melky do, cano is struggling, yeah melky and hughes and kennedy for johan, bad deal, yeah good luck
