Phillies Acquire Scott Eyre
According to Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies acquired lefty Scott Eyre for A ball pitcher Brian Schlitter.
Eyre, 36, posted a 7.15 ERA in 11.1 innings with the Cubs. He spent time on the DL with elbow and groin problems. Eyre had a nice run in the second half last year as well as May this year. He still has about $1.15MM left on his contract; the Phillies will pay all of it. The Red Sox had also been interested in Eyre.

Throughout 12 years in the bigs, Scott Eyre has had an ERA under 4 only 4 times. His first two seasons were as a starter, but still, that means in 10 years as a reliever he had an ERA over 4 6 times. As a mets fan, I'm extremely happy to see this guy go to the phillies.

Thank God he didn't end up in the Red Sox bullpen. They've got enough roller-coaster guys out there already with Aardsma, Delcarmen, Timlin and Lopez. I'm not saying the Sox don't need help out there but this guy was not it.

This isn't about how bad the mets bullpen is, even though they probably are the worst in baseball(actually I take back that probably, they are the worst in baseball), this is about Scott Eyre. And to put it simply, Scott Eyre is garbage.

Scott Eyre has been nothing less than a below average player for the cubs the last 3 years. Not only did he suck as a player but his bone head "hustle" play caused the cubs the 2006 season when he decided to flip the ball with his glove to DLee and he broke his wrist(this is not the only reason but a major reason).
Good luck Phillies... I hope Howard doesn't get hurt on a freak play due to Eyre being a idiot.

As a second lefty in the pen, the Phils could do (and have done) far worse than Eyre, a guy whose ERA+ has been better than league average each of the last 7 seasons. Pat Gillick has always been a good shopper in the closeout bin, and this is a nice cheap pickup for the Phils.

Both he and Howry were the big bull pen signings three years ago. Now Eyre is DFA...traded, and Howry has been bad this year.
The fact is he will get a few guys out for the Phils and have a couple good outings. Then he will go one or back to back horrible outings that stick with you.

As a Brewers fan, I'm sad to see Eyre go. He could have helped pad Prince's stats this season, not that Neal Cotts won't.

Realistically, he will probably be a non-factor, used in either low leverage spots or for strictly one-batter duty (Delgado, McCann) in key spots
I'd like to see the Phils pick up Rich Aurilia with Feliz' health up in the air

ERA+ is a pretty shaky stat for relievers, especially LOOGY types like Eyre. He had a 1.8 WHIP last year and a 113 ERA+

I wouldn't doubt Pat Gillick. He always finds bullpen help on the cheap. JC Romero and Chad Durbin come to mind as 2 guys who were cut loose by their team and have been awesome for the Phils' bullpen. They also got Seanez who has been good this year, and he was released. Eyre will not be there if he pitches poorley, anyway, or if a better lefty reliever becomes avalable. The Phillies could just DFA him.

Also, don't doubt Jim Hendry for not getting a good prospect in return. Brian Schlitter has good stats with 59 k's in 50 innings. He did the same with trading Todd Walker for Jose Ceda.

Looks like Scott Eyre, Pat Gillick & the Phillies got the last laugh. That World Series ring Eyre will sport the rest of his life is pretty sweet. He's been a dynamite situational lefty out of the pen for the Phillies and deserves some props from all the guys who bashed him here.
