Rosenthal's Latest: Angels, D'Backs, Giambi, Ellis

Here is the latest from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

  • Many important Angels will reach free agency this winter: Mark Teixeira, Francisco Rodriguez, Jon Garland, and Juan Rivera.  Rosenthal doesn't expect any of these four back.  Garret Anderson's $14MM option will not be exercised, but he could be re-signed.  John Lackey and Vladimir Guerrero both have reasonable club options for '09, but the Halos need to plan beyond that.
  • Several journalists have noted the D'Backs may restock the farm system if they let Adam Dunn, Orlando Hudson, Brandon Lyon, and Juan Cruz depart as free agents after the season.  They're not worried about Dunn accepting an offer of arbitration. Why would he want a one-year deal?
  • Rosenthal guesses the Indians, Mariners, Blue Jays, and A's might have interest in Jason Giambi this winter.  Giambi's .398 OBP ranks 7th in the AL.  The leader: fellow free agent Milton Bradley at a staggering .446.
  • Mark Ellis surprisingly postponed negotiations with the A's on an extension.  It had been said Ellis wanted to figure out a contract before season's end.  He's the affordable free agent alternative to Hudson.
  • The Twins are trying to get creative to find bullpen help.  GM Bill Smith says he's made many waiver claims and won some.
  • Rosenthal says "speculation persists" that J.P. Ricciardi will be canned after the season.
  • The Tigers aren't considering trading Magglio Ordonez, but Nate Robertson could be moved this winter.  Robertson seems due for a move back to the NL.  He earns $7MM in '09 and $10MM in '10.
  • The Reds are being questioned for holding on to relievers David Weathers and Jeremy Affeldt.

"Mark Ellis surprisingly postponed negotiations with the A's on an extension."

Probably sick of losing. And that 14 game streak of 4 runs or less. Ouch.

Im not sure what Rosenthal is smoking, but there is no way the Angels are gonna let all four of those players go. They traded their future first baseman in Kotchman for Teixeira and probably arent sure if Morales (their AAA first baseman) is ready to consistently play 162 games in the majors given the fact that he's never really been consistent in the past for the big league team.

As for Franky, they will no doubt offer him a contract I'd say for 4 years 60 mil. They may feel confident internally with their young gun Arredondo and their top setup guy in Shields, however they have enough money coming off the books from everyone else to afford Teixeira and/or Franky.

Garland on the other hand will probably not be re-signed simply because of the fact that they feel their top pitching prospect in Adenhart is ready.

And finally, I wouldn't understand the Angels decision not to re-sign Rivera. Not only can this guy consistently produce both offensively and defensively when given the opportunity, but he is relatively cheap for the type of numbers that he can put up.

I hope Ricciardi is fired. I have no ties to the Jays, but that guy has always come across as a tool to me. His comments about Dunn early this year were just classless. Not to mention the organization has basically been running in place during his time there. Just my $0.02

#1 Angles Fan,
I think it is in their best interest to let those for guys go. KRod is going to be looking for a lot of money and won't accept a discount from what i've read. Garland is a mid rotation guy who will probably get overpaid. It seems like the trend has been to overpay for innings eating mid rotation guys which isnt a good strategy for any team. The only guy I think they should consider signing would be Tex. But if he and Boras are ridiculous with their requests in terms of years/dollars then you have to let him go. His acquisition was made to win this year and in my opinion is was a good chance to take.

As an Angels fan here is what I would do.

Offer Tex a 7/120 deal. If he takes it super. If not, let him go and collect the picks.

Offer Garland a token 2/22 deal. If he doesn't accept take the picks.

Offer K-Rod a 3/45 deal. If he doesn't accept take the picks.

Offer Rivera a 2/14 deal with the intent to sign him.

Don't exercise GA's option. Resign him only if it's on a 1/7 type deal. Otherwise let him walk.

Eat a lot of GMJ contract and move him. Let Rivera/Willits/possibly GA battle it out for DH/LF duties. Bring up Adenhart for Garland's spot. Morales (913 OPS in AAA) can be brought up for DH or 1B if Tex doesn't resign.

Angels will then have available Wood (966 OPS), Brown (971 OPS) and Rodriguez (1042 OPS) waiting to fill in for injuries/poor performance.

Losing K-Rod will hurt, but not as bad as people think. Shields (2.87 ERA) + Arrendondo (0.92 ERA) + another reliever will be quality.

The crazy thing is that by declining GA's option, letting K-Rod and Garland walk, and moving GMJ, the Angels payroll can actually decrease even if they sign Tex to a deal close to $20m/year.

Couple that with the slew of draft picks they will receive for their departing players and the Angels should be set for another run in 09.

UConnHuskies:

I can see your point however the Angels have about 70 million dollars coming off the books and Arte Moreno previously said that next years payroll will be around the same as this years which is 118 mil. Therefore the Angels are gonna spend that money somewhere and I think there main concern will be to keep most if not all of those players.

What players that are not in the organization this year should the Angels try to go after in the offseason? I would like to see Pat Burrel who would be a big bat if Tex wasnt re-signed.

I have a really hard time believing that Juan Rivera would resign with the angels, dude deserves regular playing time and I think he'll flee.

All valid points. K-Rod is gone, and for good reason. The kid is good, but paying a closer so substantially long term, when your baserunners allowed total contiues to go up annualy is obviously not a great idea.

I believe if the Yankees push hard after Sabathia and give him Johan money, we could see him fall in the Angels lap at 120-140 for 6 years.

Juan Rivera needs to resign, he has been a solid hitter and a great team guy. They should reward him with a long term deal.

GA will likely be resigned after the option decline. Just when you write him off, he hits again.

IN conclusion if the Angels let Tex, Krod and Garland walk they will have 7 picks total in the first 1.5 rounds (Granted a terrible team doesnt sign them, then it becomes the first two rounds). All these things shape up for a bright future for hte halos

But the only problem if you did that is that the only person your adding is Sabathia and the Angels already have good pitching, not saying that Sabathia wouldnt be a good addition, but if you lose Tex then your losing a valuable bat. How do you replace him?

Nevermind about that last post, I misread. What you said is that the Yankees were to get Sabathia and Franky would fall back to the Angels, but for 23 mil per year?... NOT THAT MUCH... Maybe 15 mil per year, however in that case the Angels still have about 55-60 million freed up. Where would it go?

"IN conclusion if the Angels let Tex, Krod and Garland walk they will have 7 picks total in the first 1.5 rounds"

I understand that this would help a lot in the future but the Angels arent rebuilding, they are winning in the present and will continue to compete for years to come.

I wasnt clear enough. If the yankees dont get involved in the texiera bidding (because of sabbathia or sheets or whatever) Tex may soften a bit on hid demands.

If there is one thing the Angels have proved in the past is that you cannot predict their movements. every single major signing (Vlad, Colon, G-Mat, Hunter, Garland Trade) has literally come without warning and speculation. So lets just wait till after the parade to start examining what happens next.

HAHA...LOL I agree but it is fun to look ahead

I would rather pay Tex than CC. Love CC but adding a player like Tex does change the entire make-up of the order.

Burrell I wouldn't touch. We have enough OF's already. Definitely not a need. Especially when he comes at only a slight discount when compared to Tex.

'Several journalists have noted the D'Backs may restock the farm system if they let Adam Dunn, Orlando Hudson, Brandon Lyon, and Juan Cruz depart as free agents after the season. They're not worried about Dunn accepting an offer of arbitration. Why would he want a one-year deal?'

I've been saying the same thing on this site for the last nine months! This draft is shaping up to be loaded. Another case of the rich (in talent) getting richer.

...because Hudson just got hurt and will miss the rest of the season. Nice time to be the [relatively healthy] second best FA 2B option (Ellis).

I could see Giambi going to the A's if Barton's performance continues at the rate which it is now. The A's aren't loaded at 1B/3B and Chris Carter probably won't be up until 2010. I could see a 2 year deal for Giambi with Carter playing 3B when ready. He would also be a veteran presence in the lineup and a legitimate power threat, assuming that Thomas and Mike Sweeney don't return.

"Burrell I wouldn't touch. We have enough OF's already. Definitely not a need."

He consistently puts up 25+ homeruns and is an RBI machine. Though he may not hit for a great average, .260+, and he may strike out a lot, its still interesting to imagine him hitting after Tex (if hes re-signed) and Vladdy and right before Hunter:

Figgins
Aybar/Izturiz
Tex
Vladdy
Burrell
Hunter
Anderson/Rivera
Kendrick
Napoli/Mathis

We have plenty of money freed up from everyone else so why not? Looks pretty scary to me.

Plus too if we can find a buyer for GMJ it would free up some more money and a spot in the outfield. No-brainer to me.

"They traded their future first baseman in Kotchman for Teixeira and probably arent sure if Morales (their AAA first baseman) is ready to consistently play 162 games in the majors given the fact that he's never really been consistent in the past for the big league team."

Morales is going to get a nice long look now that Izturis is out for the year. By the time Willits is ready to come off the DL, it will be 40 man time and they wont have to make a choice between sending down Rodriguez or Morales.

"Angels will then have available Wood (966 OPS)"

Wood has sucked at the MLB level and his style isn't well suited to the bigs anyway. He really needs to go to a team with no expectations so he can learn at the big league level. Otherwise, he becomes George Arias redux (remember him?).

Honestly, the Angels need to look within much more than outside the organization.

Lackey - Lock him up for 5 more years (including the option year). Try and do it for around $12 million a year.

Vlad - Lock him up for 4-5 more years (including the option year)

GA - Decline the option and sign him to a contract that, with the buyout, comes to around $9-$10 million for 2-3 years.

Frankie - Sign him. Pay him what he wants. He is 26, has learned to pitch rather than just throw and has shown absolutely zero signs of arm trouble. Shields is not a closer and Arredondo could easily become Manny Corpas if rushed.

GMJ - Trade him for mostly salary relief. He has all the talent in the world, but has never put it together.

Rivera - Resign him cheap. Something like 3/15. He can essentially be Pat Burrell if given the chance, only with better defense and less likely to look at a grooved strike 3

Tex - They will be in the running, but they shouldn't do some shocker deal. They overpaid (at the time anyway, Hunter has been their MVP along with Kendrick and Saunders/Santana), but they didn't over pay by as much as a $200 million deal to Tex would.

Saunders/Santana - These guy are under control for some time now, but I think they should do a Haren-esque deal with each of them. I bet they would take something rather cheap in exchange for the security. This is particularly true for Saunders, who is already 27.

Figgins - People seem to forget that he too will need to be resigned after next year. Huge contributor and really the key to their offensive scheme.

There is ZERO chance the Indians sign Giambi.

We have so many 1B/DHs it's unreal.

Travis Hafner DH, with V-Mart at C, Garko 1B

Hafner/Garko DH, V-Mart 1B, Shoppach to C

Matt LaPorta 1B, V-Mart C, Hafner DH

Jhonny Peralta DH, V-Mart C, Garko 1B

Oh, and next year we will have 4 OFs AT THE LEAST with Franklin Guiterrez, Shin-Soo Choo, Grady Sizemore, and Ben Francisco. Trevor Crowe is pushing hard for a MLB spot as well and with all the OFs LaPorta will likely be pushed to 1B if any of the non Francisco/Sizemore group step up, so I can't imagine ANY scenerio we devote money and years to a guy like Giambi, ESPECIALLY after the contract we just gave Hafner.
