« Red Sox Acquire Paul Byrd | Main | Dunn Denies $100MM Rumor »
The Red Sox, three games behind the Rays in the standings, have the advantage when it comes to waiver claims. Both teams are dealing with injured third basemen for the next few weeks, and may choose to bring in some veteran assistance.
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe names four players who may be of interest to the Red Sox and Rays: Rich Aurilia, Mark Loretta, Gary Sheffield, and Kevin Millar.
Even after he clears waivers, a deal for Sheffield seems unlikely. The Rays have already expressed their disinterest. Sheffield doesn't expect a deal, noting that he's been put on waivers many times. Cafardo says the Rays do have interest in Aurilia, while the other names are speculation for both teams.

Rays could just play Hinske at 3rd.

Do you think there's any chance that Randy Winn would drop through waivers to the Rays. The on;y team I can think of that would take on his salary is the Mets, but they could've done that at the trade deadline. He would be perfect because the Rays could move Hinske to third and replace him in the outfield with Winn. If he gets claimed by another team, then I could see them aquiring Aurilla. I think the Red Sox would claim him, first. He could share time with Sean Casey at first base with Youk moving to third base. He might not get to either team, though. The Mets could claim him to play second base. He should've been moved at the trade deadline.

I would hope Aurilia wouldn't get past the Phillies. Natural fit there with Feliz a health question mark

I vote for Millar's triumphant return to Fenway. The Bosox get a fan fave to fill a hole and my O's get salary relief and...say...Chris Carter? Not a major prospect, but a little sum'un, sum'un. Hell, for a half decent prospect (not talking about a top 20 guy), we could even eat the salary (unless Millar is- improbably- a Type B FA, then all bets are off) or throw in a reliever. Jamie Walker has been better of late, has plenty of experience (including postseason, I believe), and is a lefty! What'ya say?!!! You guys love Millar, don'cha?! Hell, he threw out the first pitch in the playoffs...while he was a member of the O's! The King of the Idiots back in Boston! Huzzah!

Don't know why, but I've always liked Chris Carter (dating back to his 'zona days). Sure, he's old for a prospect, has spent the last few years in AAA, and doesn't seem likely to do much, but...Millar ain't exactly a spring chicken...or an All Star.
And even though I'm not a Red Sox fan, I don't hate them like the Yanks. It actually would be kinda cool to see Millar back there. I don't think, in his heart, he ever left.
