Cards Talking Extension With Lohse?

3:26pm: General manager John Mozeliak recently said in an interview that the press conference will be held tomorrow at 4:30, and that Cardinals fans "would be very happy" with the announcement.

1:59pm: Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals are possibly discussing an extension with free-agent-to-be Kyle Lohse.

Lohse was scratched from his start today to meet with team doctors, according to manager Tony La Russa, who was quoted as saying:

“There is no Lohse ‘announcement.’ I think what it means is there is interest and possibly progress in the negotiations.”

This situation is very similar to a situation in Spring Training, when the Cardinals had Adam Wainwright meet with team doctors the day before announcing an extension. The Cardinals have a press conference scheduled for tomorrow.

Lohse signed a one-year $4.5MM deal with the Cardinals in the offseason. It's been well-documented over the past few years that he has been seeking a multi-year deal worth over $10MM per season. He may very well have earned himself that with a career year this season. Lohse will finish 15-6 for St. Louis, with a 3.78 ERA and 119 Ks in 200 IP.

Goold writes that senior baseball writer Joe Strauss has learned that the deal could be similar to the value of the four-year, $48MM contract that Carlos Silva signed with Seattle in the offseason. If it happens, this seems like a considerably better signing than the Silva deal, and one the Cardinals need with some question marks in their starting rotation next season.

I imagine a lot of teams are upset that they passed on Lohse in the offseason, while the Cardinals are very happy with how affordable he was to them, and how late they were able to sign him. Fifteen wins and a 3.78 ERA for $4.5MM is hard to come by from a free agent these days.

Mo said during the game earlier there will be a press conference tomorrow at 4:30 talking about an extension for Lohse.

The story itself is worded a bit vaguely, but I think the idea was that the yearly value would be the same.

Personally, I'm expecting something more like a three-year deal if this gets done, possibly something like three years at $39MM or so seems like a better deal for Lohse.

As for Burnett and Perez, I think Lohse is actually underrated as a pitcher and that getting him at a three-year deal could prove to be a better value than a guy like Perez at four years. Perez is too much of a Jekyll and Hyde case on the mound from what I've seen. He's allowed 5 or more runs in 8 of his 33 starts, and he's walked 102 batters in 188 innings.

That's not someone I want to give fifty million dollars or more to, but that's just my take on him. Burnett's a bit safer, but you never know how many innings you can count on him for, and he's certainly prone to extended slumps as well.

I think Lohse could come as a very nice value compared to some of the contracts that guys like Burnett, Perez, and Garland will be getting this offseason.

$12m for Lohse is too much by about $2m/year. He had a great year this year. I just wouldn't count on a similar performance over the next 4 years.

I agree bjs, it is overpaying. But even if he goes back to a #4 or5 the cardinals seem primed for a good year. If carpenter comes back they have four guys I would view as #1 through #3 guys. Their offense is insane and I'm sure they'll add a bat. If they get a legit closer they are right up there with the cubs.

Not sure if 3/39, or even 4/48 would satisfy Boras until after the beginning of the year and all the other premier starting pitcher FA's have signed. This way has hurt Lohse and several other Boras clients in the past, but he seems to still use this same, hard nosed tactic regardless and this FA class has a good amount of mid level starters to boot.

If Boras is waiting for Sabathia/Burnett/Sheets to sign to guage what lohse should be worth, then he should be in for a surprise again and be prepared to have to wait until spring training to get his client under contract.

Seems like Lohse should be worth 10M or so over 2-3 years certainly, maybe even a couple more Mil without the meddlesome Boras.

The combination of Lohse's skillset and the current market suggests he is worth what Derek Lowe was 4 years ago. He isn't as good as Lowe, but taking into account salary inflation suggests a deal for 3-4 years for 10 million a year

I think it is a good idea for the cardinals to re-sign him. You have to realize that if STL do not sign him, he might go to Milwaukee, which probally will look for pitchers. Get him away from Milwaukee and Cincinnati and have him play for STL will make everyone in SThappy if Duncan work more of his magic like he did with Dave Stewert.
