D'Backs Face Decisions On Lyon, Rauch

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic wrote Saturday about the tough decisions the D'Backs face on relievers Brandon Lyon and Jon Rauch.

With Lyon, the D'Backs have to decide whether to risk an arbitration offer.  Would they want him back for '09 on a $4-5MM contract?  Lyon may make the decision easier for Arizona by falling out of Type B status.  Then, there'd be no draft pick to gain.  Lyon has a 7.52 ERA since June 1st.

Meanwhile Rauch's contract requires the D'Backs decide on his 2010 option five days after this year's World Series.  The option is for $2.9MM; an easy call if you ignore Rauch's last 20 innings or so.

The D'Backs also have Juan Cruz hitting free agency; he's expected to sign elsewhere.

I would think that Juan Cruz would want some stability, since umm... he was traded and cut around a bit before settling in with the DBacks.

I don't see Lyon falling out of Type B status.

On Rauch: Yes, he svcks right now. Pitchers go through slumps. 2.9MM is still well below market value. Keep him, worst case scenario, trade him.

Rauch is a no-brainer. He's tired. When he's fresh, he's a top setup man or at worst a middle-tier closer.

Lyon's worse than Rauch, so if Rauch at $2.9M is a tough decision, then Lyon is no-brainer to get rid of, because some team will be stupid enough to give him at least $12M over 3.

Agree that Juan Cruz is the best of the bunch, and could be an effective closer. I don't know why the DBacks aren't interested.

I try to get Cruz for ~$10M over 3, going a little higher if necessary. He could spell Rauch at times. That's $6M a year for two great relievers. Fill the rest in with cheap veterans or youngsters. $10M bullpen that should be pretty decent.

The D'Backs are stupid to get rid of Rauch at $2.9 million. He proved an excellent closer for the Nats and I think he has run into a lot of bad luck and perhaps a bit of tired arm. $2.9 million is just too cheap to let him go. Lyon at $5 million is a tougher call, but I would lean toward resigning too. That is roughly what a top set up man, which is what Lyon should be, earns, so if you use him as he should be you are getting a deal.

Lyon could be a fit for the Mets as a closer in 2009.

I don't think that it would hurt the Tigers to try to sign him to a deal and help the bullpen. Then you could have Lyon, Rodney, Zumaya, Seay, Rapada, A. Lopez, and two others.

I don't agree with TigerFan. I can't even count Zumaya because he's around what, half the season if Detroit is lucky? Rodney is garbage, plain and simple. Every week the Tigers' site comes up with a stupid article that he is doing something to get better (taking a different approach; having a different warm up) and it's always the same. piss poor control and blown saves. And I don't like Lyon as a closer, or at all really. I'd scoop Cruz to help the 'pen first, but Detroit needs a LOT of help in the back end.

Final note: Seay is horrificaly pathetic against lefties.

I think the Dbacks should get rid of Lyon no matter the cost. I cringe every time they bring him in. I wouldn't mind taking the risk on Rauch or even trying to keep Cruz. If all else fails, we could get rid of all of them and go after KRod.........

With Qualls closing now, it's safe to say Lyon won't be back; the last link of the Schilling trade gone. Qualls/Rauch/Pena/Slaten is a pretty good start for next season's bullpen.

I don't know if you've seen the same Qualls I have, but he has blown way too many saves for me to think he's closer material.

Cruz would be worth keeping but the team has gone out of its way to screw him so there's no way he's staying. I don't know if it's Melvin or someone in the front office that hates him, and it makes no sense, but he is not staying here.

Lyon is/was never considered to be resigned the only decision is whether to risk an arbitration offer in order to pickup a draft pick. That's a tough one right now.

The DBacks will only have about 10 mill free next year after Odog, Lyon, Dunn & Cruz all walk. That money has to fill 2B, Bullpen and any upgrades they have in mind. I can't see them spending 5 mill on a closer.
