Delgado's Option Set At $12MM

You may recall Jayson Stark's September 12th article, where he explained the details of Carlos Delgado's 2009 option.  Stark wrote that Delgado's option could've flipped from $12MM to $16MM if he won the World Series MVP and finished top six in the regular MVP vote.

Delgado still might snag a few MVP votes, but he won't be winning any postseason awards with the Mets eliminated.  GM Omar Minaya has an easy decision - exercise at $12MM or buy Delgado out for $4MM.  Earlier this year the buyout seemed a lock; now we're certain to see the option exercised.

I have two words to say about the Mets decisions around Delgado. Say Goodbye.

Does no one remember how bad he was the first half of this year and all of last year, and the year before that?

He turns it on for a month and a half... i'd still buy him out.

"Does no one remember how bad he was the first half of this year and all of last year, and the year before that".

He had a .901 OPS in 2006. That's not bad, period.

And yeah, he had a beast July and September, and a pretty good August, and ended the season with a VERY respectable .271/.353/.518 line. For a team like the Mets, the option sounds like a good idea. Unless the Mets get a long-term 1B like Teixeira, there's no need to buy him out.

Actually, since the Mets HAVE to pay the 4MM buyout either way, its like having Delgado on a 1yr/8MM contract. A very easy decision.

Now that the Mets have been eliminated can we stop hearing the stupid argument about him being the MVP? Here's an idea, the best player on your favorite team isn't automatically the MVP. Deal with it. (btw, he's not the best player on the Mets anyway...)

i think its best if the best were to exercise his option, because bringing delgado would most likely be cheaper than bringing in someone like texeria. and most of all during the offseason the mets have to work on starting pitching or getting some help in the bullpen especially after wagner is down, heilman, sanchez, schoewenweiss, and ayala, even stokes were all garbage in december. Jonathan Niese is no where near ready to pitch in the major, he still has to work on his control and to stop using his curveball all the time. I mean think about it if you throw a curveball in almost the same spot like 5-6 pitches in a row sooner or later the batter will figure out his pitch. So brining delgado back is good because i think the mets have had a good offensive year especially with 3 players having knocked in over 100 rbi's thats good enough all we need to work on is 2nd base, right field, starting pitching, and releif !

Look, if the award was called the "best player in baseball" award, then Albert Pujols would win every year. The idea of an MVP is that the player adds the most value to his team. Hence why Maury Wills won the award, why Kirk Gibson won, why Jimmy Rollins won, why Keith Hernandez won, etc. Delgado's contributions to the Mets playoff hopes were insane this year, which is why he had to receive consideration.

More then happy with bringing back Delgado for next season on his option.

I know some people want a change in leadership, and Delgado for all purposes is the leader among the everyday players. But, I don't believe the season would have ended up any differently had there been a different leader. The bullpen still would have sucked.

"Actually, since the Mets HAVE to pay the 4MM buyout either way, its like having Delgado on a 1yr/8MM contract. A very easy decision."

If you already have that much sunk in, you might as well go for the rest of it. He'll still provide good production at first.

"Delgado's contributions to the Mets playoff hopes were insane this year, which is why he had to receive consideration."

Yeah but you could make the same arguement about Manny Ramirez and it turns out to be a stronger arguement. This year though I think it will again come down to Howard versus Pujols. Howard will probably win because voters will rationalize his low BA with the fact the Phils are in the playoffs even though the Cards without Pujols would have been fighting the Pirates for the cellar.

Delgado thanks for your time with the Mets, but your time in NY is done. The Met's should sign and trade Delgado to the AL. There are teams in the AL that could use a slugger as a DH/1B. Maybe the Mets can package him with Heilman and get Greinke from KC. Don't get Texeria, but rather see them go after Sean Casey who plays with heart and will act like a verteran leader. I also think they should get Orlando Hudson for 2nd.

This is a silly conversation. Delgado's option simply HAS to be picked up at this point. You're telling me that you're going to find better value than Delgado on a 1 year/$8M deal?

Regardless of whatever decline Delgado has shown, he's still had a solid year and it was worth way more than $8M. The biggest question is value in this equation, and Delgado at $8M for a single season is a farrrr better value than shelling out big cash for Tex, or losing big production by putting Murphy or Evans there. Put Murphy at second, leave Delgado at first for '09, and then see where to go from there.

"There are teams in the AL that could use a slugger as a DH/1B. Maybe the Mets can package him with Heilman and get Greinke from KC."

HAHAHA sad.. If the Royals trade Grienke, its not going to be for a package of old, expensive veterans. How about a package of young, cheap players? Pelfrey and Martinez for Grienke and Guillen? I say just leave Grienke in KC..

Why exactly is Sean Casey's name coming up as a replacement for Delgado when a) Casey doesn't considering himself a starter any more and b) People laughed last year at the idea of him getting a starting job.

"There are teams in the AL that could use a slugger as a DH/1B. Maybe the Mets can package him with Heilman and get Greinke from KC."

You're joking right? Why exactly are the Royals going to give up 2 years of service of #2 pitcher for a reliever who chokes under pressure and a 12M aging slugger. Noting the Royals a team that is nowhere near ready to compete next year. So please... explain your logic.

"Delgado's contributions to the Mets playoff hopes were insane this year, which is why he had to receive consideration."

Delgado's April #'s: 204/299/333/632

Delgado's May #'s: 258/318/454/771

Delgado's June #'s: 229/308/476/784

There's something "Insane" about all this, but it's not his brilliant numbers. Delgado was good for about 2 1/2 months this year. That does not equate to an MVP performance. He'll undoubtedly get votes but he's not really a deserving candidate. If a player from Milwaukee had put up similar numbers with similar monthly totals as Delgado he wouldn't even be considered. Simple enough. MVP isn't about being the best player, but it's also not a popularity contest either, so being from NY doesn't automatically make you a candidate.

"There are teams in the AL that could use a slugger as a DH/1B. Maybe the Mets can package him with Heilman and get Greinke from KC."

What would the Royals want with Delgado or Heilman???

It amazes me how the larger market teams out east think they can dump their dregs on other teams and get the best players back, and those other teams should just be happy about it. Seriously, what do the Royals want with a year of Delgado and who cares how much of Heilman? At the cost of Greinke? Are you serious?

My point is the Mets have three choices right now (in my opinion). Option 1: They go all out for the win. Lose Delgado, eat the 4MM, make a move on Teixiera. Drop Oliver Perez, drop pedro. Pick up a Freddy Garcia or another pitcher that will give you some good innings of work. Sign Pudge (very cheaply after his very weak 2008) to work with the pitching staff. Make a move at K-Rod, but I think more likely trade for some bullpen help. Or if you don't like the teixiera option they could take a look at prince fielder.

Suddenly you have a line-up with beltran, wright, teixiera and reyes. They will get a reduction on luxury tax due to the new ballpark, so combined with losing pedros contract among other free agents, they should have plenty of dollars left over to make some other smaller moves.

Option 2: They resign delgado and basically take another shot with virtually the same team with no huge moves being made (with the exception of maybe K-Rod) to really sway the teams fortune and light a fire.

Option 3: They sell and sell high. Trade away reyes and beltran for some young pitching and maybe a young slugger (prince fielder maybe?) and rebuild around wright santana (fielder?) etc.

"There's something "Insane" about all this, but it's not his brilliant numbers. Delgado was good for about 2 1/2 months this year."

Again, it is about value. Delgado's contribution is the easiest one thing to single out as to why they contended this year.
