Dunn: No Word From D-Backs About Contract For Next Year

Dayton Daily News columnist Hal McCoy checks in from Phoenix, where he's been following the Diamondbacks-Reds series. McCoy chatted with Adam Dunn before Friday's game. He asked Dunn if he and the Diamondbacks had talked about a contract for next year and Dunn said, “No, nothing. And I’m not worried about it."

And then the talk turned to Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo, who recently  told writers the Reds traded Dunn because he was going to ask for between $120 million and $125 million for a new contract.

“Who is he, my agent?” said Dunn. “First and foremost, I would never say anything like that. And if I did the only guy I would have said it to would have been Ken Griffey Jr. But I didn’t say it.

Did you know that Dunn and Griffey were such good friends? I didn't.

It looks as if Dunn and Bronson are trash-talking each other, almost in a sarcastic manner. I thought Bronson told reporters that it was a 100MM contract some time back.

I think Dunn contract talks will be heavily dependent on Webb extension talks. The Webb extension was tabled earlier this season. If the DBacks keep Dunn, it will mean that Webb won't be extended beyond the 2010 season (its pretty much a given that his 2010 option will be picked up)

No wonder Griffey is having his worst season. Dunn's baseball hating ways must be rubbing off on him.

The DBacks can't afford him. I've looked at their salary budget a hundred different ways and it just doesn't stretch enough to sign Dunn.

Signing Dunn would not only give the DBacks zero dollars to do anything else in the offseason but would strap the team horribly going forward.

I recommend we invest in time machine research and try to undue the Quentin deal and Eric Byrnes extension instead.

tmar: I like Eric Byrnes. A lot. Especially when he was with the A's. But a salary dump is gravely in order

However, a Dunn extension would mean Webb is gone after 2010, and his option might not be picked up (although it SHOULD be b/c its WAY below market value for Webb).

Adding on to the other post: tmar, you said you looked at their salary budget many different ways:

If, when Byrnes was healthy again (or even not, remember, Mulder was resigned while on the DL), the DBacks could eat some salary and trade him for scraps, would it free up enough to sign Dunn, assuming Webb is not extended?

Maybe a trade of CoJack when he hits arbitration, maybe a trade of Doug Davis this offseason (assuming Unit comes back), etc.

I'm not saying any of this is a good idea. Best idea for the DBacks IMO is to extend Webb, keep Byrnes (if he performs well, the 11MM/yr isn't that bad), let O-Dog walk, and keep CoJack.

I hope the Dbacks don't sign him. Dunn on the Giants could replace the left-handed power bat we lost in Bonds. With Dunn, the number of splash hits at Mays Field will start climbing again. Put him at 1B, let him learn the position like much of the rest of the Giants have to learn their own positions. Everyone seems to think of Dunn as a non-factor, but numbers are numbers and his production is always impressive.

One, Dunn seems agile enough to play first and it seems like more of a natural position for him. Two, it is nice to see that Dunn has focused on making more contact. Even Dunn thinks he Ks too much, despite taking walks.

"With Dunn, the number of splash hits at Mays Field will start climbing again."

Do you mean McCovey Cove?
