Gregg Expects A Trade

Marlins reliever Kevin Gregg has recovered from knee tendinitis, but he's still not getting his closer job back from Matt Lindstrom as promised.  Gregg sees this as a sign he'll be traded this winter, and many writers have speculated the same.

Gregg, 30, has a 3.66 ERA in 64 innings this year.  He saved 61 games for the Marlins over the past two seasons despite shaky control (4.56 walks per nine innings).  He's throwing harder than ever this year (93.2 mph on average).  Gregg will receive a raise upon his $2.5MM salary via arbitration this winter.  After '09 he'll be a free agent.

Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes are the top free agents with a closer pedigree.  Brandon Lyon and Eddie Guardado are other possibilities.  Gregg may join Huston Street on the trade market.  The Indians intend to add a closer, while the Tigers, Mets, and Cardinals could also be in the market.

I wonder what it would take for the Cards to get Gregg. They have reported needs behind the plate and we have Bryan Anderson, who just happens to have had a very good year at AAA at only 21, and Molina at the ML level who just got a 4-year deal.

A very bad year to trade him. there are about 5 better options on the fa market that are way better than Gregg.

The only guys who are clearly better than Gregg are K-Rod, Fuentes, and Kerry Wood, and it seems like a lock that Wood ends up back in Chicago. That makes 2 better options, and both of them will cost at least $10M a year on a long term contract. Gregg will make $3-4M and it would essentially be a one year contract.

Maybe some team would prefer to give Juan Cruz or Brandon Lyon their closer job, but Gregg will take less years and cost only one good prospect, maybe two solid ones.

Supply and demand wise, somewhat. Gregg could very easily end up a set up guy for another team.

Inflation, however, will increase the price of Gregg. K-Rod and Fuentes will get way overpaid. The big guys on the trading block will be Street and Gregg.

Lyon has been even worse than Gregg. Juan Cruz is an intriguing option. The biggest problem in trading Gregg will come from other trades....if Street and possibly BJ Ryan hit the market then Gregg could get lost in the shuffle.

I woulnd't trade Bryan Anderson for him if I were the Cards. That is unless you got a Dan Uggla. Jeremy Hermida, or Scott Olsen back as well....(not saying trade only Anderson for those guys too)

Hermie13, just to throw this out there, but a lot of scouts seem to think that Anderson won't end up behind the plate, and that if he does all of his value will lie in his bat, which isn't exactly that special. If Anderson can stay behind the plate he should be a solid regular, but he'll likely be nothing more than a bench player if he doesnt improve his defense.

If teh Marlins did a multi player trade with the Cards like Uggla and Gregg it would be for at least 4 decent prospects. 2B is weak and Uggla will get a lot of talk this off season.

Uggla and Gregg would defintely fill a couple of the holes the Cards NEED to fill this off-season. At least if they want any fans to show up. There is already backlash around STL that fans don't think that ownership will do as promised and pony-up the money, even TLR is saying that in the Post Dispatch. Fans are already threatening not to show-up if that's the case.
