Indians Leaning Toward Brantley In C.C. Deal

According to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Indians made decide on the final player in the C.C. Sabathia trade today.  Hoynes says the Indians are leaning toward outfielder Michael Brantley over third baseman Taylor Green.  Hoynes reminds us that the Indians have already received Matt LaPorta, Zach Jackson, and Rob Bryson from the Brewers.

I can't believe they might pass on Green. He projects as a 30+ hr guy, who hits for average and draws walks, and is a good defender at 3b and won't have to be moved off the position. Brantley doesn't offer that kind of upside, and even if he did, he's an OF. 3b is a hard position to fill.

Ok, Brantley is a good prospect. Hits for average, doesn't k, and is a stolen base threat. But compare the two. One is Kenny Loften, an excellent player, the other is a lefty Scott Rolen with a better obp. 3b is just such a harder position to fill than any of the OF spots. Why teams would pass over quality P's, 3b, or C for an OF doesn't make much sense in my book. Just my two cents.

Green does not project to hit 30 HR's. More like 15-20 (20 may be generous.) A Jeff Cirillo type, valuable, but not a star.

I guess a .400 OBP for Brantley is bringing nothing to the table (rolls eyes).

Tribe has Wes Hodges at 3B already, not too mention 1st round pick Lonnie Chisenhall (playing SS but may move to 3B). Reason the Tribe was interested in Green was to play him at 2B...he didn't play any there this year and Brantley bring speed...something the Indians sorely need.

One scouting service compared Taylor Green to Casey Blake....decent, but definately not a star. Baseball America also isn't sure he'll be able to stay at 3B as his power isn't the greatest....though good enough to stay IMO.

Also, I think the Tribe thinks that Brantley could hit leadoff in a year or two...thus allowing Grady to move down to the 3-hole where his power will have some more value....

I was sort of hoping that Jeffress was on the table but I can't say I'm disappointed in the Brantley selection (if, in fact it's true since I've seen no confirmation). If he turns out to be another Loften, as some project, I'll be very happy.

I agree with Hermi13, I can definetly see where the Indians are going with this. They already have a few YOUNG options at the corner spots and not very many speedy options in the outfield.

One thing I can't explain is if they really are hoping he can be up with the club in a couple years, what will they do with Sizemore already in CF, and Choo in RF. Will he play LF or will they move Sizemore to LF and play Brantley in CF?

How stupid would they have to be to move a guy like Sizemore to LF? If anything, Brantley is the guy who goes to LF. Also, isn't the jury still out on Choo?

AA, the jury is out on EVERY young player. But Choo looks a hell of a lot better than most.

Not out I meant.

"AA, the jury is out on EVERY young player. But Choo looks a hell of a lot better than most."

Choo most certainly looks like a 6 tool player (6th tool being patience) but his numbers against lefties are kind of scary, especially when you consider his numbers this year were inflated by a huge BABIP
