Padres Rumors: Moores, Giles, Hoffman

MLB.com's Barry Bloom talked to Padres owner John Moores recently.  Highlights:

  • Moores doesn't expect to be out of the picture next year despite his divorce.  Word was his wife Becky wanted to gain control of the Padres.
  • Moores expects Sandy Alderson and Kevin Towers back in 2009, and Paul DePodesta was recently extended for three more years.
  • Moores says it's "more likely than not" that the Padres exercise Brian Giles' $9MM option as opposed to the $3MM buyout.  Moores acknowledges that the Padres probably cannot find a player like Giles for $6MM.
  • Trevor Hoffman may be the tougher call, as the Padres love him but he may require a multiyear deal.

They are stupid not to resign Giles. His performance this year is definitely worth $6 million, or even the full $9 million, in today's market.

I think they should. He obviously wants to stay in San Diego. Not to mention, with what is probably going to be a rebuilding of the team and a possible youth movement, they would need a veteran to lead the team.

Besides, that would be a bad PR move, trading Giles away.

This is related to the post above, as well:

How about trading Khalil Greene along with a decent prospect for Magglio Ordonez?

"How about trading Khalil Greene along with a decent prospect for Magglio Ordonez?"

If the Padres are balking at a $6 million net for Giles, do you really think they can stomach Ordonez' contract?

I can't imagine how they could justify giving a multi-year contract to a guy who is 40 years old and and only averages 81mph on his fastball.

I love Hoffy, but it just doesn't make sense. That being said, the Pads are going to have some serious attendance issues if he goes and the payroll is slashed as much as has been discussed. And I frankly don't care if no one goes to Petco, because San Diegans have been hoodwinked by ownership (not that many of us seem to care). Ah, the disappointment of being an avid sports fan in San Diego.

To be fair, Hoffman's big pitch has always been his change and his WHIP is down year over year, despite his less than sparkling ERA. He still gets the job done and is worth 2 years if the rate is low enough and he has a clean bill of health.

I love Hoffy ut he is done. Start trining Bell or someone because it's not going to be easy to replace hells bells. Keep Giles Trade Headley for alex pie of the cubs we need speed, keep kouz and get khaleel G. to some anger managment classes. Get Dunn and another pitcher. What have you heard about the pds going to spend only 40 million next season
