Jack and Freddy are 2 solid cats. But with the direction the Bucs are heading, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to keep them around. At the very least Joltin' Jack is gone.

I've always liked Wilson. I saw a lot of his games when he was with Peoria in A ball. Hard to believe that was 9 years ago already.
Posted by: kosmo @ www.ObservingCasually.com | September 22, 2008 at 09:58 AM
I think that logically if the Pirates can move those two they should. Neither one really fits into their plan for the future, and at least Wilson could probably land them a good young player.
The main issue is a complete lack of young replacements already in the system, unless you consider Brian Bixler one, which I don't. They would have to acquire some sort of replacements fir those two, whether through trades or cheaper free agent signings.
Posted by: scribbletone | September 22, 2008 at 10:45 AM
I think they need to trade both Wilson and Sanchez. I would only trade Laroche if I got an amazing deal for him. I don't know about other Pirate fans but I know we aren't going to be good next year so I really see no harm in letting Cruz and Bixler start all year maybe sign some cheap veterans to mix in there. Additionally I wouldn't mind seeing the Pirates significantly decrease payroll and then if in '10 they think they are in position to make a run sign a "big name" guy or two.
Posted by: BucSox | September 22, 2008 at 11:01 AM
I agree. Bucs should go and trade both Sanchez and Wilson. As good as Wilson is defensively, his bat has become below average, and it is hurting this team.
I think that the Bucs should go and sign Grudzielanek. His a solid contact hitter, with very solid defense, and he won't cost at all too much. The team would have really good defense if they kept Wilson too, but I guess that's not going to be happening.
In any case, they still are a rebuilding team, but they should at least stay a little competitive. For any fans that they still have.
Posted by: Ink&Paper | September 22, 2008 at 11:31 AM
Err, that is, "he's".
And get something for Sanchez while they still can. He's going to become quite expensive for them. Besides, it's not like they're losing on another Aramis Ramirez anyway.

Well said BucSox.

"I don't know about other Pirate fans but I know we aren't going to be good next year so I really see no harm in letting Cruz and Bixler start all year maybe sign some cheap veterans to mix in there."
Committing to those two as your double play combo would be a mistake. They are completely unproven at the MLB level, and neither one projects to be anything more than solid if they reach their ceilings. It's likely that at least one of them would bomb by May or June.
The idea of signing a Grudzielanek to play second and then maybe use Wilson to trade for a reasonable SS replacement would be a more logical thing to do than let Cruz and Bixler struggle for 5 of the 6 months of the season.
What they shouldn't do is mistakenly sign guys to long term contracts who don't really fit into long term plans, like Sanchez.

"What they shouldn't do is mistakenly sign guys to long term contracts who don't really fit into long term plans, like Sanchez."
I don't know if you rerefering to them resigning him last year but if you were I think untl this year he did fit into their long term plans with back to back .300 seasons.
Either way Grudzielanek would be a nice fit and I think they could still get a reasonable amount for Sanchez. If they were smart the would wait for Furcal and Cabrerra to both come off the market and then Jack Wilson's value will skyrocket. I think they need to go after Brignac and get some pitching for Sanchez don't forget Freddy can play third.
Posted by: BucSox | September 22, 2008 at 02:11 PM
Realistically though Sanchez was never going to become a part of a winning Pirates team. His 2006 was a fluke and all of his value lied in his batting average. If his BA went down he would become near worthless, and you can argue that's what happened
Posted by: scribbletone | September 22, 2008 at 02:26 PM
No way the Rays even consider giving up Brignac for Sanchez. He's likely their long term SS unless Beckham pans out.
Posted by: scribbletone | September 22, 2008 at 02:29 PM
I don't expect them to trade Brignac for Sanchez I just said they need to go after Brignac. Why wouldn't they take a deal with Wilson for Brignac not straight up but that would be the starting point. The Rays use Wilson until Beckham is ready and by that time Wilsonis at the end of his career.
Posted by: BucSox | September 22, 2008 at 02:39 PM
Pirates need to trade J.Wilson to tampa bay for reid brignac. he struggled somewhat in AAA this year but hes only 22.
Posted by: BucsNewEra2011 | September 22, 2008 at 02:41 PM
Yes with Beckham, Brignac becomes touchable, like bucsox said let wilson play in tampa until there 1st overall pick beckham will be ready!

Pirates need to move Andy to 2nd base!
Posted by: BucsNewEra2011 | September 22, 2008 at 02:48 PM
I agree Pirateswillwinin2010,
That being said the Pirates absolutly need to cash in on Jack Wilson they already passed on Jair Jurrgens and Matt Kemp for him.
Here is my idea of the percfect off-season for the Buccos. First ship Jack to Tampa in some deal for Brignac. Trade Freddy for some pitching or a 1b. Finally try to send Laroche and some other players to New York for Cano maybe Paulino and Morgan.
Posted by: BucSox | September 22, 2008 at 02:57 PM
With your 2010 lineup it would be more likely Alvarez at 1B and Walker 3B. You also excluded Brandon Moss who is looking like he might be a serios anchor in the middle of the lineup next year. Also expect the Pirates to trade Andy if they get a good deal for him.
Posted by: BucSox | September 22, 2008 at 03:03 PM
Im not sold on Brandon moss completely yet. he does not show good plate discipline at all right now. the only way i think we pry Cano from the yankees is for Sanchez Andy LaRoche and maby Paulino if they would even take that. but he would be a huge upgrade in our lineup

I forgot to add a back up Catcher Robinzon Diaz, so it will either come down to Bixler or Ford as the util infielder

Man, I would love to see Adam LaRoche as a Yankee. Hes just a solid hitter. He and Nady are the type of guys the Yankees need for a championship team. What do you think about:
Kennedy and Marquez/Horne for Adam LaRoche.
Posted by: yankfan1 | September 22, 2008 at 06:38 PM
Sorry yanksfan1, The Pirates don't want Kennedy if they did they would have got him in the deal for Nady.
Pirateswillwin this is my prediction if the aquire Brignac as we said:
1. McCutchen LF
2. McClouth CF
3. Alvarez 1B
4. Doumit C
5. Moss RF
6. Walker 3B
7. Brignac SS
8. Cruz/Bixler which ever pans out next year
Bench:
Tabata OF
Ford 2B
Bixler/Cruz
Pearce 1B/OF
Veteran FA

1. Maholm
2. Snell
3. Ohlendorf
4. Lincoln
5. Moskos
Bullpen:
Beam
McCutchen
Grabow
Hansen
Sanchez
Bautista
Capps
I also think toward the end of the year that Bryan Morris might see time in the pen and Yoslan Herrera could be a sleeper for the rotation or the pen. Also if the Pirates are truly serious about being willing to sign a "big name" when they feel like they are one or two pieces away don't be surprised if they go after Felix Hernandez.
Posted by: BucSox | September 22, 2008 at 11:23 PM
I think if teh Pirates trade LaRoche to NY they need to either get Cano or Jackson back obviously not straight up but in a 2 or 3 for 1 what about LaRoche, Morgan, Paulino and a mid level or two for Cano and Melky? I know Melky isn't spectacular but him and Cano are like attached at the hip.
Posted by: BucSox | September 22, 2008 at 11:26 PM
Buc Sox
Id pass on that trade. The Pirates arent getting Austin Jackson or Cano for a guy whose hit .270 for his whole life. I like the guy but he aint worth that much.
Posted by: yankfan1 | September 23, 2008 at 06:58 AM
Would you take LaRoche, Paulino, Pearce, Morgan for Melky Cano?
Posted by: BucSox | September 23, 2008 at 08:07 AM
BucSox its not bad lineup but you forgot Andy LaRoche. He was like the main guy in the Bay deal. I think he has quick enough hands to play 2nd Base and i think he will convert. I agree with you on Bryan Morris i think this kid will be a stud. I was going to put him into the starting Rotation but i figure in 2011 he will be in the rotation. Snell will be gone by then probably trading him. Also the yankees wouldnt want Adam LaRoche hes not a clutch enough player to play in a town and atmosphere like that. if we could get Ian Kennedy for him that would be great, you said the pirates didnt want him, the pirates did want him but the yankees did not want to give him up so the pirates took the next best pitcher they made available.
Posted by: BucsNewEra2011 | September 23, 2008 at 08:57 AM
That being said the Pirates absolutly need to cash in on Jack Wilson they already passed on Jair Jurrgens and Matt Kemp for him.
"BucSox its not bad lineup but you forgot Andy LaRoche. He was like the main guy in the Bay deal. I think he has quick enough hands to play 2nd Base and i think he will convert."
I don't think there is any question that LaRoche can play 2B, as he acquitted himself well at the position with the Dodgers both at the MLB level and with the 51s. The main problem with LaRoche is his bat, which is quickly being exposed. He showed excellent plate discipline in the minors, but with the command at the MLB level he ends up looking at a lot of strikes and getting in the hole. He is a bit like Reggie Willits with power and has to adjust to the better command of the strike zone at the top level.
Posted by: AA | September 23, 2008 at 12:38 PM
I absolutly agree with you AA and that is why if teams are indeed interested in him I think they should explore the market for him. I heard the Twins might be intersted maybe we could get one of those young pitchers they have. Anyway I just find it hard to have faith in anyone named Laroche.
And to address what Piratswillwiniit said Adam doesn't have to be clutch to play in NY they have clutch guys they just need a guy that plays good D at first which they haven't really had since Tino and a guy that can hit fairly well.
Posted by: BucSox | September 23, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Bucsox
Where would the yankees play Paulino? Posada and Molina have those positions locked. Morgan is just fast. The Yanks already have two speedy outfielders in their system MLB ready, Gardner and Christian. Gardner is crazy fast. Is their any chance the Yanks could land LaRoche without giving up Cano because if Cano is part of the deal I wouldnt do it. Melky would make me hesitate too.

"That being said the Pirates absolutly need to cash in on Jack Wilson they already passed on Jair Jurrgens and Matt Kemp for him."
I forgot to answer this one. Don't think for a second that the Dodgers gave a thought to giving up Matt Kemp for Jack Wilson.
Posted by: AA | September 23, 2008 at 07:20 PM
AA,
That was the report early in the year way before it was clear that Kemp was a stud I read it I think like two days after they said Furcal was going to be down for the whole year. And the Dodgers seemed pretty desperate at the deadline when I initially heard that the Dodgers Pirates and Red Sox were the teams in the deal I honestly thought the deal was going to be Manny Jack Wilson and Grabow to LA. Bay to Boston and Lowrie and Kemp to Pittsburgh.
yanks1,
of course they could easily get Laroche without Cano I am just saying as a fan the only player the Yanks have that I believe we would even have use for is Cano.
Posted by: BucSox | September 23, 2008 at 07:53 PM
jack wilson is an exc vet who could help/be a great fit for many teams, but he still has a 7mill contract so the rays are not going to give up a brignac for a contract that's bigger than most of their core players at a position that isn't a hole.jason batlett is solid. maybe he isn't as good as jw but he's not that far behind.
find another dream

Tampa Bay wasn't willing to give up Brignac in the proposed Bay deal. No way they would give him up for Wilson
