« Odds and Ends: Sabathia, Price, Reds, Mariners, Cardinals | Main | Burnett Open To Extension »
A common theme: The Rockies need pitching. Troy E. Renck discusses the offseason focus of the team as they look ahead to a rotation anchored by Jeff Francis, Aaron Cook, and Ubaldo Jimenez, and the loss of Brian Fuentes in the bullpen.
"Ownership needs to go beyond anticipating injuries. It needs to expect slumps from at least one key starter and critical reliever, and give general manager Dan O'Dowd money to address those areas. It makes a trade for a frontline starter imperative..."
Renck suggests a trade for Aaron Heilman and being ready to pounce on Chad Cordero if reports suggest he's healthy. Both could be safety nets for Manny Corpas who will probably have first crack at closing provided he has a strong winter. Heilman, who made $1.2MM avoiding arbitration this year and might benefit from a change of scenery, could also start.

"i would give them Heilman in a deal for Holliday and Helton."
Wow....that's just....wow
Anyway, they can basically take Heilman.
The Mets will also be after Chad Cordero.

lol Chris, hope you're joking.
As a Mets fan, I would love to work out something involving Heilman, but not sure there's a match. I'd want a Major League ready reliever back, and you need someone like that just as much as the Mets do. I'm not sure the Mets would be interested in just prospects when they're looking to win now.
Hell, I'd add to the package if it meant a chance at prying Taylor Buchholz away.

could the tigers dump Nate Robertson on the rockies for a SS or a reliever?

How about Holliday for Bronson Arroyo, Homer Bailey, a bullpen arm (ie Burton, Bray, Massett) and a young position prospect like Drew Stubbs.
Gives the Rockies a middle rotation guy, a young pitching prospect, some bullpen help, and a young outfield prospect for down the line.
Gives the Reds a RH power hitter that they desperately need and the salary relief to sign both Holliday long term and the ability to go out and sign a FA pitcher.

Duchscherer and Street for Fields and prospects.
The A's get a much needed quality 3B, while the Rockies get their starter and closer.
Duke has been solid all year and Street can be there to close, or to back up Corpas. Yes, Duke has spent some time on the DL, but can be signed cheaply and is a front of the line starter. Street has had an off year, but he is still very young. He's got great career numbers, and I think he wants a change of scenery anyways.
Does this sound fair?

matt cain & randy winn for matt holiday & garrett atkins, maybe balance the deal out with some relief pitching and low level prospects from both sides.
Rockies get their future ace, under team control for 3-4 years. A good hitting rf to replace holiday who would excel in coors field.
Giants get their middle of the order guy and hope to either extend him upon completion of the trade or work out an extension later. They also get their 3b for one year and time to decide wether or not he is in the future plans

Alright, green and gold, I believe you mean Stewart. But I think that deal only works if one of the prospects is Hector Gomez. And then some low level guy. Deal seems fair to me, but something tells me the Rockies won't so it, because Duke's injury history and streets off year. Plus if they trade Attkins this offseason then they have a re-placement in Stewart. But we can hope for the best.
jimmie, I hope your kidding. There is no way that deal would happen.
#1 The Giants dont want to give up Cain. And will only do so if they get a position player like him(under team-control for 3 more years) Holliday and Attkins dont really work into their re-building schemes.
And #2 If I was the Rockies I wouldnt do that. Because ya you get a team ace, but you also lose 2 of your top offensive producers. And replace them with an aging average everyday player.
#3 Remember these teams are inter-divison so that off the bat makes it a big "?".
I'd like a Duke, Street, and maybe Dana Eveland to the Rockies for Stewart/Attkins, Hector Gomez, + 1. That deal would make me a happy A's fan.

That’s pretty funny Jimmie. Helton and his poison pill contract for a far younger #2. Atkins ( Road splits of Ba/obp/slg of 313/402/531 in ‘06, 254/327/446 in ‘07, 235/281/386 in ‘08)might get you in sniffing range of Sanchez though.

Yeah. I did mean Ian Stewart. Sorry.
I really like Stewart, but no on Atkins. His home/road splits are terrible, especially for a would be new home in an Oakland pitchers park. Besides, Stewart would be under team control for a lot longer and cheaper.
Maybe change it to Duke for Stewart/prospects??

Aright, what about a three team deal with the Mets, Rocks, and Giants. The Mets would send David Wright to the Giants, The Giants would send a package built around cain or sanchez and possibly winn to the rockies, while the rockies would send a package built around holliday to the Mets. Obviously prospects would have to be involved to balance the deal out especially to the mets.
This deal would fill the giants gaping hole at third base. The rockies would get good solid pithing which they desperately need as well as a above average outfielder to replace holliday. The Mets have been complaining about wrights attitude this year and have gotten very little production from their left fielders this year, so holliday would be a perfect canidate to replace wright's power. I think the Giants and rockies would also have to give ny a mid/high level prospect each to please everyone??

Jarrod Washburn anyone?
Posted by: Humongo | September 21, 2008 at 04:17 PM
Leland: In the end I think the inter division thing sinks that trade. I could see Col & S.F. maybe swapping a lesser part for a lesser part but not much more. With that yard that Rockies are the one team in the league that has not gone strong starters first. With their young core if they found some quality starting pitching The Giants ( and the rest of the division) would be regretting it for several years.
Megusta: Who know what the M’s front office will be like this off season. That aside if there was ever a field that screamed for a ground ball pitcher its Coors. I am not sure Washburn can keep the ball out of the air enough to make him very tempting to them
