« Cain Hopes To Stay | Main | Rosenthal's Latest: Huff, Hardy, Russ Ortiz »
With payroll looking tight for 2009, re-signing starter Freddy Garcia at a reasonable price would be a great move for the Tigers. John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press thinks Garcia wants to stay.
His first big league start of the year was excellent - just two hits and one walk in five innings. Garcia averaged 88.8 mph on his fastball, down 2.6 mph from his effective 2005 season. Still, he'd be a fine addition to a questionable '09 rotation. The Tigers will hopefully use their goodwill to sign him before he hits the open market.

This signing can't possibly hurt the Tigers. It just makes the competition for the rotation better.

How much is he gonna cost though? Rotoworld is predicting $7M plus incentives.....can the Tigers even afford that with their inflated payroll?

I could see a little less but not much. I just don't know how much they will drop payroll...the Tigers haven't actually said anything.

I bet Gillick is still kicking himself in the ass right now for acquiring Garcia... Right now having a guy like Gavin Floyd would be great

prov1x41- I bet money that if Gavin Floyd, regardless if he is proven a "fluke" or not as so many people profess, were still a Philly, the Blanton trade would never have happened. That means three more legit prospects and one more filler chip (Spencer) in the Phillies' system.
What would be defined as a reasonable price for Garcia though? The Rotoworld estimate looks rather high IMO.
