According to Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle, the Astros declined Doug Brocail's $3.25MM option for 2009. The Astros are concerned about Brocail's ailing shoulder. However, they'd like to re-sign him at a lower rate. Brocail seemingly profiles as a Type A free agent, though he might accept arbitration if the Astros offer it. He was disappointed by their decision on his option though.
Brocail, 41, posted a 3.93 ERA in 68.2 innings. His strikeout rate was up significantly from '07. He struggled in July and August, but pitched well in September.

I didn't know it was possible for Ed Wade to meet a middle reliever he didn't want.

I say "good riddance". The guy was good for the first half, but didn't look so hot after the break. Thanks for the Holds, Doug, but it's time to hang it up.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees or Mets gave him a multi-year, double digit millions type contract.
It wouldn't be a bad investment for the Mets - it's not like their bullpen could really be any worse.

I think the fact that he will bring back draft picks is why they declined the option. They will offer arbitration.

I think this is a sign that the Astros are cheap.

Anyone willing to shell out $100 Mill. and some change for Carlos Lee is not someone I call "cheap".
(And he's worth every cent of it.)

I think the Astros should go after AJ Burnett.I also heard that they will be active in the CC Sabathia talks. But probably just to have other teams raise their biddings. The Yankees probably won't sign him now, so I'm thinking the Astros have a pretty strong chance at signing this guy. It's either CC or Sheets for the Astros. I say if they're really thinking about Sheets, why not spend an extra $20 million on Sabathia?
Backe should be erased from the rotation and traded to a team like the Pirates. He's worthless. His ERA was over 6.20 this season. He's got good stuff, but he doesn't have the control he should. So I'm guessing he'll be moved and the rotation will look like this.
Roy Oswalt
CC Sabathia/Ben Sheets
Randy Wolf/another type B starter
Wandy Rodriguez
Felipe Paulino/Fernando Nieve/another prospect will compete for.

Yeah, he is really valuable missing 50 games on the DL. He was good last year, and this year, and probably next year, but what about a big fat LF making 18 mil when he is 35 and 36? We'll see. I would like Doug Brocail in the Mets pen. 1 year 3 million or something.

"Yeah, he is really valuable missing 50 games on the DL."
Mind you, he was the only starter in 2007 to start all 162 games. Had he not been injured by a pitch that got away from Arroyo this year, he probably would've been right up there again.
The arguement wasn't Carlos Lee's worth, but the fact that Astros owner Drayton McMoney isn't afraid to spend a little now and again. They have a "flexible" pay roll:
--"Wade acknowledged the club will have "payroll flexibility," as has been the case for several offseasons. The Astros' payroll was somewhere between $88-92 million, and there are no indications owner Drayton McLane is going to slash the budget for '09."
