« Will Brewers Try To Sign Sabathia? | Main | Indians Choose Brantley In Sabathia Deal »
Just for fun - let's say you're a GM with a ton of money to spend and a quality farm system. You want to build the best 2009 team possible. What would it look like? Here's my take:
C - Gerald Laird
1B - Mark Teixeira
2B - Orlando Hudson
SS - Rafael Furcal
3B - Adrian Beltre
LF - Manny Ramirez
CF - Marlon Byrd
RF - Matt Holliday
DH - Aubrey Huff
SP - C.C. Sabathia
SP - Jake Peavy
SP - Derek Lowe
SP - A.J. Burnett
SP - Ryan Dempster
RP - Francisco Rodriguez
RP - Brian Fuentes
RP - Huston Street
I'm hoping the infield defense would make up for the outfield. I'd have to trade for Laird, Beltre, Byrd, Holliday, Huff, Peavy, and Street. Does any team have the young players to pull that off? After that I'd have to spend $180MM on ten free agents...to cover their 2009 salaries alone.
Let's see your dream teams in the comments...all free agents are fair game, plus players who have been mentioned in legitimate trade rumors.

"let's say you're a GM with a ton of money to spend and a quality farm system."
"I'd have to trade for Laird, Beltre, Byrd, Holliday, Huff, Peavy, and Street."
Well you wont get all those guys with a QUALITY farm system. You have to have an awesome farm system to get them. To me quality means average or maybe a little above average. Maybe to you quality means very good. Not sure though.

It's nice to see someone recognizes the value of Aubrey Huff. That guy can mash. How's his defense? Is he a guy that can step in at 1st for a couple of years while NY develops Miranda or someone else?

C - Gerald Laird
1B - Mark Teixeira
2B - RobinsonCano
SS - Rafael Furcal
3B - Adrian Beltre
LF - Manny Ramirez
CF - Nate McClouth
RF - Matt Holliday
DH - Milton Bradley
SP - C.C. Sabathia
SP - Jake Peavy
SP - Derek Lowe
SP - A.J. Burnett
SP - Matt Cain
RP - Francisco Rodriguez
RP - Brian Fuentes
RP - Huston Street
Just a few changes from your original post, and the trade for Cain and Peavy seems impossible, but lets pretend we are the '95 Yankees. They had the farm system that could have done this.
Posted by: YankeeGiantPirate | October 03, 2008 at 12:03 PM
I agree Braves#1 fan. You do not get/keep a quality farm system signing free agents by constantly giving up comp. picks, unless you draft unsignable in the mid-lower rounds like some teams do and offer them high dollars to sign.
Pick 1 player to maybe suit a need and go after it, no more.
The original list is pretty good for top targets, only Danny Uggla over Cano and I would put injury risk Milton Bradley over equal injury risk Aubrey Huff.
BJ Ryan will probably be available also this year as a closer, not sure if he rates above Huston Street as 3rd in the list, he looked pretty bad late season and his FB was high 80's in games I saw.
Posted by: johns | October 03, 2008 at 12:10 PM
That would be a very good team. I am all for it.
The only change I would make would be putting Dunn in DH. Obviously Bradley will hit for avertage but I think you have enough guys to hit for average with McClouth, Holliday, Furcal, Cano and Laird. There is more need for power.

Hanley Ramirez SS
Josh Hamilton CF
Albert Pujols 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Manny Ramirez LF
Lance Berkman RF
Mark Teixeira DH
Dustin Pedroia 2B
SP Johan Santana
SP Brandon Webb
SP CC Sabathia
SP Tim Lincecum
SP Jake Peavy
RP Joe Nathan
RP Brad Lidge
RP Francisco Rodriguez

Be cool for all all these guys to sign on one team... with a team trading away many of their guys for money.. Absolutely absurd, I know... But this would be the best year to build a quality team for the next 3years.. while you "just" rebuild the farm... while puttin on an incredible show for the fans!!!
Posted by: JTrain19 | October 03, 2008 at 12:24 PM
I'm pretty sure there haven't been any legitimate trade rumors about Hanley, Hamilton, Pujols, Berkman, Pedroia, Santana, Lincecum, Nathan or Lidge recently.
Posted by: William | October 03, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Marlon Byrd in CF? Heck, Juan Rivera would be better there. I would take Reed Johnson. Though, I might not be a fair judge, due to the fact that I am a Cubs' fan.
Posted by: jlb1980 | October 03, 2008 at 12:27 PM
yeah i didnt read the part that said available. my bad
Posted by: bkoke | October 03, 2008 at 12:28 PM
I would mostly sign free agents....
SS - Furcal
CF - Kemp
RF - Holliday
1B - Tex
LF - Dunn
DH - Burrell
2b - Cano
3B - Blake
C - Salty
SP - CC, Lowe, Burnett, Dempster, Sheets
RP - K-Rod, Woods, Fuentes
Ok, it would take a lot to trade for those 4 players. Good mix of youth, OBP and Defense I think.
Posted by: CY33 | October 03, 2008 at 12:39 PM
Bkoke- I don't take exception to your not seeing 'available', I just think there would be an awful lot of wild pitches without a catcher on that team.
Posted by: HypnoToad | October 03, 2008 at 12:41 PM
Of those listed as free agents or truly avaliable, I would go for the following.
C - Laird
1B - Teixiera
2B - Hudson
3B - Blake
SS - Furcal
LF - Manny
CF - McClouth
RF - Holliday
DH - Huff
SP - Sabathia
SP - Lowe
SP - Sheets
SP - Cain
SP - Peavy
CL - K-Rod
LHP - Fuentes
RHP - Street
LOOGY - Beimel
Long - Oliver, Park
If money is more of an issue, I would replace Sheets or Burnett with Dempster, Holliday with Juan Rivera or Garret Anderson, or take both and have Rivera or Huff play 1B in place of Tex.
Posted by: AA | October 03, 2008 at 12:49 PM
oops meant to put mccann
Posted by: bkoke | October 03, 2008 at 12:50 PM
C - Salty
1B - Teixeira
2B - Uggla
SS - Furcal
3B - Blake
LF - Manny
CF - DeJesus
RF - Holliday
SP - CC, Lowe, Greinke, Peavy, Kazmir

"Marlon Byrd in CF? Heck, Juan Rivera would be better there. I would take Reed Johnson. Though, I might not be a fair judge, due to the fact that I am a Cubs' fan."
Rivera has less than 200 career innings in center, and was lousy defending the corners this year. Johnson is arb-eligible and not a free agent. Not sure if Byrd is even available but he is a better bet than either as CF, in my opinion.

Wow.. are you guys like completely blind or something? albert pujols is clearly the best 1B in baseball way better that mark texiera he's nothing compared to pujols.. pujols is the best player in the game.

Slipknot, it's supposed to be only players who are actually available this winter, not some all-pro all star team.
Though, I'm interested in your contention that Y. Molina is the best catcher in MLB (as well as Ludwick in RF and, hell, Glaus at 3B).

LA agreed to decline Manny's options as part of the trade.

2B B.Roberts
SS R.Furcal

3B A.Huff
RF M.Bradley

C R.Hernandez

OK, people really need to go and read this closely before they start talking smack about other people's choices.
C - G. Laird
1B - M. Teixeira
2B - O. Hudson
3B - D. Uggla
SS - R. Furcal
LF - M. Ramirez
CF - R. Winn
RF - M. Holliday
DH - R. Howard
SP - R. Halladay
SP - CC Sabathia
SP - D. Lowe
SP - J. Peavy
SP - B. Sheets
RP - K-Rod
RP - B. Fuentes
RP - C. Cordero
I would move Howard to DH so his defense won't be an issue, as well as Uggla to 3B. Replace him with Hudson at 2B, and Furcal to lead off. This team will have good power and OBP, SLG%. Laird will keep opposing runners from running free. I was tempted to pick Abreu over Howard (moving Manny to DH, where his D won't be too much of a hit), but thought better of it.
Halladay to lead my staff (yes, he was rumoured to be traded by the Jays in case they couldn't extend his contract), Lowe to keep the ball from going out of the park, and K pitchers Peavy and Sheets to baffle opposing batters.
Good relief pitchers, and I think Cordero is much better than Street, as he has more experience, before falling this year.

The ONLY change I would make to Tim's lineup would be at Short:
I'd have to put Adam Everett in there (assuming he can regain his 2006/2007 pre-Carlos Lee-collision self).
Posted by: thered86 | October 03, 2008 at 02:52 PM
I could do this with all FAs.
C Olivo
C Zaun
1B Teixeira
2B Hudson
3B Blake
SS Furcal
LF Manny
CF Baldelli
RF Abreu
DH Dunn
U Hairiston Jr
OF Kotsay
SP CC, Sheets, Lowe, Wolf, Byrd
CL Rodriguez
BP Juan Cruz, Bob Howry, Ohman, Wise, Affeldt, Dennys Reyes
You'd have to be pretty insecure to think you needed a better team than this to make the playoffs.
Posted by: IamWeasel | October 03, 2008 at 02:52 PM
has there actually been a legit rumor about Matt Cain? I am pretty sure that he was said to be untouchable. Just because 30 teams would love to have him, doesn't mean that he is automatically available.
And i like that iamweasel has affeldt in there. He is a solid late innings relief and helped the reds go from disastrous pen to totally respectable.

overall it was a mostly FA team, but i needed a catcher and rf. Ichiro, i feel could be a driving force behind my offense for my team.
i pulled a wimpy move and just picked the really insane relievers, and starters but i assumed injuries to all but Peavy, so i put my backup rotation too.
i picked up willie bloomquist because he plays nearly everything and is great at the game, manny/milton bradley and adam dunn if i need a power bat off the bench

WHERE'S LINCECUM???
Posted by: giantsfan92 | October 03, 2008 at 04:27 PM
Molina is the best catcher in MLB and he is the most underrated they all credit this cub's catcher soto and he's not even a good defensive catcher he sucks a pickoffs whoopee he can hit 20 homeruns go cry about it.. you name one catcher who you think is better than molina behind the plate not offensive.
Posted by: Slipknot2142 | October 03, 2008 at 04:42 PM
Ryan ludwick has great potential and is only going to be getting better.. and for glaus? he broke the record for least errors at third base this season thats not including his like 27 homeruns and 99 RBIs.
Posted by: Slipknot2142 | October 03, 2008 at 04:44 PM
that's why bengie is called "BIG Money Molina"
Posted by: giantsfan92 | October 03, 2008 at 06:33 PM
Nice try on your justification Slipknot but you are still way off.
McCann, Mauer, Martin(better defense than Molina) all way better options at catcher. Ludwick is good but way better options in in RF like Holliday, Dye, Quentin, Hamilton. As far as 3B Wright, Ramirez, Cantu, and some guy named A-Rod.
Adam Wainwright are you serious Johan, CC, Volquez, Kazmir, Beckett, Dice-K, Ervin Santana, Liriano, Lee, Hamels, King Felix the list goes on and on. By the way on your bullpen you forgot Nathan.
Intersting note on everyone that just did straight up fantasy team disregarding the "available" part no mentioned Ryan Braun.
