Good solid signing...LaRue is a good backup catcher, now that means that Brian Anderson will be one of the Cardinals top trading chips this off season.

I sure hope they didn't pay much for him. He stinks offensively. You would think with a primarily defensive oriented starting catcher that the Cards would want someone that can actually hit the ball as his backup.

Smart move to do it now (and give him the $100K raise). The catching market is thin so locking up a quality backup early (especially one that knows their staff already) is a good move.

How the hell does signing a backup catcher who will be 35 before next season even starts to a 1 year deal signal a move of a prospect who isn't even 22 yet and just entered AAA after tearing up AA? Regardless of if Jason Larue was signed or not, it would have had 0 effect on Anderson. Do you understand how stupid it would be to put a prospect who hasn't even spent a full year in AAA as your backup catcher? Both for your short term success and his long term? Anderson could very well be traded this offseason, but that is not at all a result of the resigning of an aging backup catcher.

Huh? How the hell are these two related? A backup catcher is a role player. Anderson projects as MUCH better than a backup catcher, although they are primarily projections.
Anderson isn't ready for MLB. And, you generally don't put high-upside prospects at backup slots, starting their service time clocks and greatly reducing their PT...you let them get regular PT in AAA.

Damn. I was hoping the O's would get him to mentor Wieters in the art of catching in the majors.

It means that Larue is the backup to a guy named YADIER MOLINA. Why bring up Anderson when Yadi is signed to a team friendly deal for multiple years and hit over .300 and will most likely win a gold glove? Yadi is only 26 so why not move Anderson for another good prospect that isnt blocked?

Adam H. and Melonis Rex: Anderson doesn't have a place on the team. Molina is and will keep blocking him. It would make sense for the Cardinals to move him since he has some value.

I didn't say the Cardinals shouldn't trade Anderson.
I said the Cardinals shouldn't give him a backup job, which depreciates his value. Since its not a "mentoring"/learn the staff type deal since Anderson probably won't be catching for the Cardinals, there is no reason for him to be with the big league club.
LaRue has zero effect on Anderson.

I didn't say they shouldn't or wouldn't trade Anderson. Please learn reading comprehension. I said that the signing of a 35 year old backup catcher is completely irrelevant to the fate of a 21 year old catcher who just entered AAA. Can you show me an instance where a team kept a prospect as a backup catcher for a whole season? I completely agree that Yadier does block Anderson. That has nothing to do with this though, as the headline doesn't read "Cardinals sign Molina to extension." It's that they resigned their old backup catcher. If you think Anderson had any chance of being the backup catcher, regardless of if Larue was signed or not, then you are an idiot.

I like the re-sign. Yeah, Larue isn't in his offensive prime anymore, but he still plays great defense behind the dish. He also brings another veteran leader into the club house that is full with many young guys. As far as Anderson goes, yeah he will not come up as a backup catcher. The only way we may see him in the pros with the cards is if, God forbid, Yadi gets injured and they need a starter replacement or if Yadi gets traded somewhere down the line of his contract, which I doubt. If they trade Anderson this offseason, it better be for something smart, like someone to help out Pujols... I'm liking M. Holiday
