« Cubs Rumors: Hendry, Payroll, Ibanez, Roberts | Main | White Sox Looking For Speed »
ESPN's Buster Olney talked to a "well-placed source," who stated unequivocally that the Phillies will not trade Ryan Howard this winter. There's been Howard trade chatter since February, when he set a record with a $10MM first-year arbitration award. This time around he might get $14-15MM.
Howard, 29 in November, hit .251/.339/.543 in 700 plate appearances this year. It was a respectable season, ranking tenth among first basemen. Howard ranked fourth last year.

tim,
if we did trade him... speculate on the best possible hauls we could get for him
thanks

Why speculate on a trade that will never happen? That is opening a pandora's box of terrible trade offers from homer fans that will annoy the majority of readers. I don't want to see any "Murphy, Pagan, and Heilman for Howard" posts or "Kennedy and Damon for him" ideas. It's just a bad idea...

Tim is not Peter Gammons. He can speculate pretty much as well as the rest of us.

who the heck came up with this rumor? Why in the world would the phillies trade Howard?

"Why in the world would the phillies trade Howard?"
Probably because although he's an elite power hitter, he has massive holes in his swing and once his unreal bat speed begins to decline his numbers will suffer. His value lies solely in his ability to take pitches and smack homers, he offers no speed, defense or ability to hit for contact. These are the type of players who generally decline far faster than anyone else, people tend to forget this these days because of drugged up sluggers like Bonds and McGwire jacking 40 homers deep into their 30's. Historically that is not the case. Howard is the type of player who should show a sharp decline in his skills within the next three seasons, and at that point his value will plummet. And this is a guy whose salary will skyrocket through arbitration until he reaches free agency when presumably he'll demand a massive contract based on all those homers. Whoever signs Ryan Howard to a long term contract will be very unhappy.
Personally I think that the Phillies should move Howard this offseason or next season, no doubt. A core of Utley, Rollins, Victorino, an outfielder signed this offseason and whoever they can land for Howard would be good. Once people look past all those home runs and RBI's, you realize that Howard is a player who's long term prospects are extremely risky.

Isn't we will not trade someone the usual mantra before trading a star? The truth is most players can be had for some price. If the Pads tomorrow offered Peavy and Gonzalez the Phils would take it... of course that would mean Towers would require brain surgery. But my point is if someone this offseason offered the Phils a package for Howard that would allow them to compete and be a better team they'd take it. However holding onto him another year while his price tag goes up isn't the worst idea ever.

A respectable season?
I guess 48 homers and 146 RBI's is now considered respectable.

When you factor in his avg, the months during which he was entirely lost, and his terrible VORP... yes.

Howard in Sept:
.352/.422/.852
Phillies:
In NLCS
2 big reasons to keep the big guy around and 2 reasons why other teams will call and ask about him

To me Howard is someone who will not age well, and in a few years will be an overpaid washed out first basemen. I really think this is the highest that we will ever see his value, and a perfect time to trade him. But I have mixed emotions because he is the face of the Phillies and has done so much for us... maybe another MVP?

Howard's slugging % didn't exceed .500 until early-mid September this year. True. Look it up. He was average for 5 months and a god for 1.

I never bought into this rumor. The Phils are going to be the best team in their division for a while, why trade Howard?
Howard didnt have a respectable season, he had an MVP season. I dont care that he hit .250. He drove in 146 RBIS. Still I think Pujols deserves it though.

Ryan Howard, despite his .250 average, had a MVP year, without him, no way the Phillies even make the Playoffs.
Of his full 3 seasons, he ranks 1st in HRs and RBI's in MLB. The second closest to him is A-Rod, and he's a FAR distant second.
The man had what, 153 hits and 146 RBI's! That's almost a RBI per every HIT! What ratio even comes CLOSE to his production????
Pujols had good numbers... but an MVP should come from a team that makes the playoffs, or the guy had such an unbelievable year as to no one else second came close...
Howard HAS to be the 2008 MVP.
He has played 3 1/2 (4) years... Rookie of the Year in year 1, MVP in Year 2, and now soon to be MVP again in year 4.
Unless we can get a TOP Pitcher and 3 top prospects... no way do we trade him!
