« Odds And Ends: Cuban, Zaun, Hall, Mariners | Main | Giants Discussing Uggla, Konerko And Lee? »
The Giants shuffled their 40-man roster this week, cutting ties with pitchers Tyler Walker, Kevin Correia, and Brad Hennessey. All three were eligible for arbitration and probably would've received significant raises, but are now set to become free agents.
According to the SF Chronicle's John Shea, the Giants would've traded them, but all three cleared waivers without drawing interest from other clubs.

Correia could be a nice pickup on a inor league deal. He showed some flashes of promise here and there.

Thank God Walker is GONE!!
Correia would make a good long reliever. He is really good for 4 inn, but then will get SHELLED in inning 5

It's called pitching depth, Sabean. Correia and Hennessey are more effective than Palmer (who was DFA'd)
Your 2009 rotation now looks like Lincecum-Cain-Sanchez-Lowry-Zito. Who knows how Lowry will be next year? If I'm right, Pat Misch is the only MLB depth guy for that rotation. That's bad news, especially if you have one guy who's recovering from shoulder surgery and one guy who needs 100 pitches to get through 4-5 innings on a regular basis.

The '09 season is already looking more promising for the Giants!
In order to make this a competitive ball club, this offseason Sabean will have to trade for a cantu/hardy/uggla type player with power to fill an infield power void. Next I think he will have to sign at least two vet. relievers for the pen who won't melt down like walker and trashner (beimel comest to mind right away). If lowry isn't ready for the season I can also see them making a short term move for a veteran starter.

I'd like to see the Pirates pick up Hennessey.

Best news I've heard all week.

The Giants are NOT a small market team, despite how desperately they attempt to make us all believe it by having a payroll 30 mil or something less than the Dodgers.
That said, they let go of these guys, but will be a big frontrunner for Sabathia, and any decent reliever on the market.
Correia probably should have been kept and turned into a JP Howell-type, but oh well. No huge loss, I hope.

Leland11: I absolutely agree. A third baseman (Edwin Encarnacion or Cantu or Garrett Atkins) and maybe even a second baseman (Dan Uggla) should be top priorities for the Giants. Then comes bullpen, and maybe a good starter (nothing too fancy) if the Giants need one.
melonis rex: While pitching depth is necessary, guys like Correia and Hennessey and Walker all have ridiculously high ERAs and would be no help as spot starters or long relievers. Same with Pat Misch.

They should have kept Correia as a middle reliever befor Wilson

GiantsFan315:
though i may be biased, as a dodger fan, i dont see the rockies even consider trading atkins to the nl west, or even the Nl period. EE prob wont be moved, unless for some ridiculos package, as the reds feel he is their future. Uggla could be similar to atkins. the marlins may see if an Al team would be willing to trade before even talking to the NL, just so they wont get burned during the season. if the dodgers dont resign Blake, i wouldnt mind a trade for either cantu or uggla, so long that it doesnt include kershaw, broxton, martin, loney, kemp, ethier, or dewitt(he is goin nicely, even with struggles in the postseason). this was a comment on a diff post, but does anyone seeing the yanks being interested in A.Jones. hell prob just require cash, and was reportely wanting a trade if he doesnt have a staring job next yr.
just wondering

I would not be surprised to see Kevin Correia get picked up by the Padres.
Posted by: helloelan | October 11, 2008 at 04:18 PM
Kevin Correia as a starter in 2008: 5.37 ERA. Not a major dropoff from 5.15
And, look at his past years. Yay for giving up on guys after down years, its just about as moronic as giving someone a contract based on a career year (i.e. a CYA season in 2002, *cough cough*).
Posted by: melonis rex | October 11, 2008 at 05:31 PM
Hennessey and Correia were never more then 4A players. Its just sad the Giants had no depth at pitching or else these guys woulda been dropped a while ago. Players like Hennessey, Correia, Walker, and Jose Castillo were used to protect our young talent nothing more. Now that the kids have grown older these players are expendable. However I dont understand why the Giants got rid of Travis Denker.

JaCoby- Depth is supposed to be 4A guys.
Alderson/Bumgarner will NOT be ready in early 2009 and if there is an injury to one of your starters (and guess what, injuries to pitchers are very common), you need someone to come in and take a start. Or, you have your "pen" starting a game, which burns out the pen.

I don't get the move with Hennessey. He showed real promise down the stretch this year and in his AAA assignment and who cares about arb? What was he going to get? $1 million max?
Posted by: AA | October 11, 2008 at 06:37 PM
Lol depth is not having 4A players. Depth is MLB ready players and young talent who have MLB promise. Not players who are stuck in between the lines. The Giants will be pushing to make the playoffs next year and good playoff teams have a mixture of the 2 types of players I mentioned. Teams who mainly consist of 4A players dont have depth, they have nobody ready at the current time. And usually have a poor record to show for it.

Brad Hennessey will sign with the Mets IMO...
Posted by: BaseballFanatic40 | October 11, 2008 at 07:50 PM
BaseballFanatic40- Somebody will take a flier on him and Correia. Mets sounds like a good idea, since they need several bullpen arms. Cardinals also makes sense, as does Tigers, Braves, Brewers, Rangers, anyone who needs a bullpen arm pretty much.
Posted by: melonis rex | October 11, 2008 at 08:10 PM
I think the Mets should try to sign Hennessey as he has shown signs of life at times, but for the Giants he has overstayed his welcome. It's not life changing news that these guys were released so don't treat it like that.
It does clear 40-man roster move if the Giants want to pick up any FA talent this offseason, which they should certainly consider for their horrendous bullpen.
