How To Fix The Mets

I will offer my own opinions on how to improve the Mets in the Offseason Outlook, due within a few weeks.  Many journalists have already weighed in - let's take a look.

  • Newly added bullet: John Harper of the New York Daily News.  He advises the Mets to decline Delgado's option while signing Orlando Hudson, Raul Ibanez, and Derek Lowe and trading for J.J. Putz.  Say goodbye to Castillo, Perez, and Martinez in this plan.
  • Ken Davidoff of Newsday: Sign free agents Francisco Rodriguez, Darren Oliver, Juan Rivera, Fernando Tatis, and Wes Helms.  Also sign one of Jon Garland, Derek Lowe, or Oliver Perez.  Exercise Carlos Delgado's $12MM option.  Trade/release Aaron Heilman, Duaner Sanchez, Scott Schoeneweis, and Luis Castillo.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post: Sign C.C. Sabathia, even if it takes $150MM over six years.  Sherman notes this would lessen the load on the bullpen (Sabathia averaged 7.23 innings per start in '08).  I prefer this plan to spending $100MM on K-Rod and a mid-tier starter.
  • Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog: Buy Delgado out for $4MM rather than exercise his $12MM option.  Interesting, unconventional thought by Cerrone.  Cerrone, like Davidoff, finds the idea of trading David Wright or Jose Reyes to be misguided.

"Matt Holliday is a perennial all-star - treat him like one."

Actually, he is an overated, dependant on Coors field, one year left on his contract rental player represented by Boras. Treat him like one.

"And No Murphy is not for real. He is gonna end up worse than Jay bruce did. Trade him while he still ahs value."

Huh? It's hard to fathom somebody being more idiotic and misinformed then the guru, but I think you have done the trick my friend. Congratulations that is incredibly hard to do.

"I dont see F Mart as too be a succesful MLB for some reason. He doesnt have a great body structure, Injury Prone, Not even that great stats. I think your looking at a D Willis type of career. But at least Willis could hit pretty good"

Is this guy kidding me? He already has concluded Jay Bruce is a bust, he thinks Fernando is a pitcher, he tinks Ike Davis is a good prospect, he thinks Daniel Murphy is all hype, despite having as good of a callup as a guy could possibly have. He is the most patient hitter on this team already, has a wonderful idea of the strikezone, he has seen over 4 p/pa, he has a line drive rate at bout 34 percent, and he uses the whole field. I honestly don't get why anybody in their right mind (though I have serious doubts whether dawnride is in his right mind) would say he will bust next year. There is not one piece of evidence that suggests this.

How about this idea for the Mets. Sign Juan Cruz. Sign Doug Brocail. Sigh Manny Ramirez. Be done with it.

"I mean. What does h even do. He cant run, He doesnt walk. Hell strike out 160+ times a season. He dusnt have power. Whats he good at???"

Who Fernando Martinez? He can run, field, and hit. That is usually what baseball players are supposed to do. How many players do you know who have had 2 full seasons in AA ball before their teenage years are over? How many put up respectable numbers? There are not many who do, and the on'es that do usually make it in the bigs.

People are really so stupid. So a kid who is 19 and not even close to finished developing as a man is not hitting for big power against 23, 23, and 25 year olds. Lets cut him now. A teenager playing pro baseball has to learn the strikezone? He has to learn the art of working an at bat? You mean, he wasn't programmed to be able to do these things at 19 years old, when most major leaguers have trouble doing these things? Man, what a horrible prospect. You would have traded off Jose Reyes too back in the day.

" "bucsox" Why the hell would you platoon evans and murphy at first that will give you comines 10-15 homers and a .275 BA When you got a potential 25 homer 100 RBi .300 Averaged Tatis! Thats what happens when you try to solve 1 problem thinkign about another. And No Murphy is not for real. He is gonna end up worse than Jay bruce did. Trade him while he still ahs value."

I never said anything about Murphy or Evans I don't know where you got that from.

"I would say a package of nick blackburn/glen perkins/denard span, brian buscher, boof bonser, and jesse crain for wright or reyes would be good on both sides."

Ah well i will have to disagree with that. Wright or Reyes would need like a haul similar to what the Marlins got for Miggy. About 4-6 prospects including a can't miss, another top 50, a decent one, and throw ins.

''Actually, he is an overated, dependant on Coors field, one year left on his contract rental player represented by Boras. Treat him like one.''

So apparently you think Aaron Heilman, Nick Evans, Scott Schoeneweis and Luis Castillo is sufficient trade bait to get Matt Holliday because he plays at Coors Field? Holliday batted .307 away from Coors with a .415 OBP this season, with his power numbers not far behind. While that was a gripe about him in the past, the guy has come into his own and has learned to hit in any environment. The guy is an All-Star whether you like it or not. He's 28 years old - he's just entering his prime now.

No, I agree, that offer is not close. He might be valued like a superstar player in a trade, but I just think any team paying prospects expecting Matt Holliday to produce like he did at Coors is making a big mistake.

It would be general manager malpractice to trade Matt Holliday for Heilman, Schoeneweis, Castillo and Evans.

Why would you trade a potential franchise player (in Coors, anyway) for two heart-attack inducing relievers, a rally-killing 2nd baseman well past his prime, and a somewhat promising though completely unproven rookie? There isn't a can't-miss player or piece to build around anywhere in that deal.

this is the lineup i want for next year

get holliday by trading delgado for 2 high end prospects and package these with maybe kunz and a mid level prospect for him

shoppach
trade church and schneider for shoppach and a minor league outfielder

i love byrnes for his leadership ability and i really like milton bradley as a possible signing

"No, I agree, that offer is not close. He might be valued like a superstar player in a trade, but I just think any team paying prospects expecting Matt Holliday to produce like he did at Coors is making a big mistake."

I think what nrmax is trying to say is that teams see Holliday's number and expect to be getting an elite middle of the order hitting capable of a 1.000 OPS. But realistically he's a high average hitter with good power and discipline good for a low .900s OPS, likely even less than that in the AL. I think most teams are aware of this though.

"
o hudson 3 years 24 million
fuentes 4 years 32 million
lowe 3 years 30 million
garland 2 years 18 million"

You completely live in a fantasy world. Hudson will likely cost something like 4/40, Fuentes somehthing like 4/48, Lowe something like 3/51, and Garland something like 5/60. These are just figures that I've read and heard bounced around.

"
castillo and heilman to arizona for byrnes and cruz
we take on a little extra money and they solve their 2nd base problem."

First off, Juan Cruz is likely to be let go by Arizona. Eliminate him from the deal though, and I think that deal becomes reasonable.

"get holliday by trading delgado for 2 high end prospects and package these with maybe kunz and a mid level prospect for him"

Okay.. Carlos Delgado will not land you two high end prospects. Well actually if Casey Blake could land you one then maybe Delgado could. But no he really couldn't. More like one top prospect and another solid low level guy. And realistically taking whoever you get for Delgado and adding Kunz, likely to end up as a set up man, and a mid level prospect isn't even close to enough to land Holliday. Now lets say you actually got two top prospects for Delgado. If you added Kunz and another solid prospect, that might land you Holliday though.

"shoppach
trade church and schneider for shoppach and a minor league outfielder"

The Indians won't deal Shoppach for Church and Schneider, especially not in addition to an OF prospect. The Indians would likely want superior players to Church or Schneider, or young guys for Shoppach. I'm not sure how interested in adding Schneider the Indians would be, considering they already have Victor Martinez and Schneider is due $4.9M in 2009. I like the idea of Shoppach to the Mets, but I just don't know how they make a deal the Indians would like.

Wow Met fans are delusional I will say that scribbletone and nrmax88 have a serious grip on reality but these other guys I wonder if they even think before they type.

Do you think the Mets could trade Carlos Delgado to the Yanks for Cano? Is that far off? What if Johnny Damon was somehow packaged in the deal?

I think Delgado for Cano and Damon would be jumped on by the Mets. The Yankees would never make a deal like that though. How much is left on Damons deal anyway? Cano is a building block type of player, even coming off a down year. If the Mets could make that move, they lose the immediate need for a LF and 2B, and could potentially throw money at Mark Teixeira or CC Sabathia. Never will happen though.

As for Schneider, I still don't get it. You have LF, 2B, SP, SP, CP, RP, RP to fill, and we are worried about replacing Brian Schneider, who was very good this year. He was one of the few guys who swung the bat well late, and his defense is top notch. I think Schneider had a lot to do with Pelfreys progression, getting him to trust his stuff and just attack the strikezone. He is a leader for the young pitchers, and I am perfectly content with Schneid behind the plate.

Gents, take a step back and breathe. The Mets were basically two games out over the past 2 years. THE PROBLEM has been pitching. They've blown so many games over the past. Fix the pitching situation.
I think Reyes would benefit from batting either second or seventh. He doesn't do what it takes to get on base as a leadoff batter. With his ability to bunt and propensity for triples, he would be a solid 2 batter. Or as a 7 batter, he could clean up whatever the big guns don't and at the same time cause havoc for Schneider and or the pitcher/pinch hitters. Which brings me to the leadoff batter. Why not try to get Ichiro (unhappy) or Figgin? These guys like to get on base and both can run. Also, they are not all that expensive. You won't get a lot of dingers from left field but they'll be on base and stealing as well.
Heilman should be given the chance to start if the Mets don't acquire another starter. Perez is too erratic and is not worth 10 million. If not, either give him a defined role or trade him for one of the two guys above. With him not having a defined role, I think that the yo-yo has affected him. The core guys aren't going anywhere so deal with it. You can put an all star team on the field but if the pitching doesn't get upgraded, it's the same old story.
1-Ichiro/Figgins type
2-Reyes
3-Beltran
4-Delgado/Wright (depends on pitcher)
5-same as 4
6-Church
7-2B
8-catcher
If the pitching is upgraded, I'll take my chances. After all, they were only 2 games out from two playoff appearances.

ok let me just say something to all you mets fans. i have been a hardcore mets fan for awhile but i don't see why you guys would start Daniel Murphy at second i think he is one of the most over rated players on the mets staff along with Nick Evans. Evans a guy who was going to the all star game in the minors. I hardly ever see evan come through in clutch or in defense both Murphy and Evans were horrible in the outfield the only reason they were able to make some decent plays is because the help of Carlos Beltran. I know Murphy and Evans are not really Outfielders but damn can you trust Murphy in your starting lineup in 2009 I mean come on this guy can not even put down a bunt. And i see most of you batting him second i mean what if in a game he has to bunt Reyes to second this guy won't even be able to put a bunt down. Sure he came through at clutch moment in Atlanta with the pinch hit double and a lead off triple against the cubs which no one was able to bring him home. Murphy batting average also came down alot during the end of the season, maybe he was tired, or he was not mentally ready for october because since its first season in the majors. I think its better for Murphy to stay on the bench and let someone like Easley or pick up someone at 2nd. Luis Castillo is garbage now yes i know but we have to be able to come through with a trade thats why we should have signed Ronnie Belliard when he was a free agent instead of re signing Luis Castillo honestly i prefered Matui at 2nd of course hes prone to injury as well. The only option for 2nd is Brian Robberts, Orlando Hudson, David Eckstein, or Robinson Cano, i remember the Yankees being intrested in Heilman and Schoweinweiss I don't know maybe something can work out.

o hudson 3 years 24 million
fuentes 4 years 32 million
lowe 3 years 30 million
garland 2 years 18 million

first of all fuentes is going to cost you more than 8 mil and year and lowe is going to cost more than 10 mil a year. garland maybe that much but if gil meche got 11 mil i doubt garland will get 9 mil.to pick up delgado option and than trade him would set a very bad example to incoming FA. if anything you let him play into the season and trade him than if at all. and the holliday trade is absurb cause for those package of players that you would send to him it laughable. look at what the brewers got for lee and he was only a 2 month rental not for the full year which you could negogiate with him for an extention. holliday is one of the best hitting LF in the game. the rockies will get tredemous value for him. its a pipe dream for you to think you can get him. and i highly doubt that the yanks would make a deal with the mets just out of principle.

"I highly doubt that the yanks would make a deal with the mets just out of principle."

Completely agree. Both teams would be too scared to help the other team out too much. What if Delgado led the Yankees to WS win? What if Cano exploded and batted .340 with 30 homers? Now if Cano does that for the Cardinals, big deal.. But if he does it for the Mets in the same city, then its a constant reminder of the mistake to the Yanks and their fans.

You have to keep the core, they make the mets. Reyes and Wright are our Young Stars and beltran is just an all around player. Mets should go after orlando hudson because i dont see the transition of murphy to a 2nd baseman working out. He is a natural 3rd baseman and wont be playing there as long as he is with the NY mets. Orlando Hudson provides us with power and can fit into the number 2 hole. Bring back delgado because he was a monster in the second half of the season. One more wont hurt. Go after K-Rod because he is very young and is a reliable closer. I dont think we should spend our money on CC because we just got johan. Pelf and maine will be fine. Dont resign ollie unless we can get him for cheap. I think he is going to want alot more money because he has scott boras as an agent and has showed fans he is a big game pitcher, although he wasnt spectacular on Sunday. Dump Castillo. Bring back Tatis to play a great role on the bench. Trade Evans because we showcased him off to every team this year. Go after Derek Lowe or Jon Garland as a back end of the rotation guy if we cant get ollie. Lowe was great this year and garland can give you innings and win ball games.

The Bullpen, here we go! I say keep joe smith, brian stokes and give ayala and feliciano a shot. Duaners arm looks to be finished and we can move on with aaron heilman. Schoneweis can hit the road as well.

Here is how i see opening day at Citi Field as:

Reyes SS
Orlando Hudson 2b
David Wright 3b
Carlos Delgado 1b
Carlos Beltran CF
Juan Rivera LF
Ryan Church RF
Brian Schnieder/Ramon Castro C
Johan Santana P

Starting Rotation:
Johan Santana
Mike Pelfrey
John Maine
Derek Lowe
Jonathon Niese

Bullpen:

CL K-rod
Brian Fuentes
Joe Smith
Brian Stokes
Darren Oliver
Luis Ayala
Pedro Feliciano
Juan Cruz
