THURSDAY: According to MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince, the Indians exercised Carroll's $2.5MM option for '09.
MONDAY: ESPN's Buster Olney says it's looking more and more likely the Indians pick up Carroll's option.
SUNDAY: According to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Indians will re-sign infielder Jamey Carroll this week. They have a $2.5MM club option on him, but it seems that they may be hammering out a deal for less.
Carroll, 35 in February, hit .277/.355/.346 in 402 plate appearances. He spent time at second and third base this year.

I am not a big fan of these types of moves so it really doesnt make sense to me... i mean why cant the indians just save money and call up a prospect.

What prospect? The Indians are woefully short at minor league infield talent. And don't say Barfield because Barfield only plays 2B and your utility guy needs to play multiple positions. Carroll is a actually an excellent bench guy. Versatile and productive both offensively and defensively. This is a good and expected move by the front office.

That .355 OBP alone has to be worth something, especially considering that the guy can play a bunch of positions.

Why on Earth would you bring up a prospect to just sit on the bench if you had one anyways? Now THAT makes no sense. You want your prospects to be playing everyday and get more experience. Riding the bench as a backup in the ML makes zero sense.
Personally I was hoping to see Carroll traded this winter. As you hinted to, his .355 OBP is very nice a and a team looking for a stopgap on the IF would have been interested probably.

i wasnt suggesting the prospect be on the bench but i do think there are better options out there than Jamey Carroll that can be had for less years and less money... if he is willing to take a deal under 2.5 million then they should sign him if not give the opportunity to some else

Might be more constructive if you could suggest who that "someone else" should be. It's certainly nobody from within the Indians organization. Otherwise it's just baseless whining.

There may be better infielders on the market, but you'd be hard-pressed to find one with Carroll's bat and solid defense who would be willing to play a few times a week for $2M or less. The manager sees him as a clubhouse leader, and he's able to cover three different positions (2B, 3B, SS) for a team that has young players at each position. It's a good move.

Nice to see his option picked up, good, low risk move by the Tribe.

Solid move by Cleveland.
Carroll is a great bench guy, he can play multiple positions and he's good for a solid OBP. When you're plan for third base is Andy Marte, then this kind of move is needed anyways.

This is a decent price for a Carroll-type player. He is basically a similar idea to Doug M., except that he bats right handed and trades some power for some speed.

Less years? How do you sign someone for less than the 1 yrs Carroll has left??
