« Padres To Explore Peavy Deals With Cubs, Dodgers | Main | What's Next For Ken Griffey Jr.? »
According to Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog, the Mets picked up Carlos Delgado's $12MM option for 2009 today. GM Omar Minaya announced this plan about a month ago.
It was an easy call on Delgado, given the $4MM buyout. The 36 year-old first baseman hit .271/.353/.518 in 686 plate appearances.

who would the Mets want for Delgado? Hideki Matsui would fit the bill in LF at Shea. And his contract expires after the season as well. Beltran in CF would help in out.

"who would the Mets want for Delgado?"
Pitching or Montero. 1B market is thinner than LF, no way they trade him for LF/borderline DH

Picking up the option is a no-brainer and allows the Mets to keep their leverage when negotiating with FA 1b candidates and/or other teams in trade talks. If they do find a 1b they like, maybe a 1b/LF type like Dunn or Burrell, they can deal Carlos for a P or 2. Have to be careful, because if they sign or get a replacement for Delgado that only plays 1b, the other teams have the leverage in trade talks, as they know we will have 2 1b and only one spot to play them, hence my suggestion for a versatile guy who could play OF if signed and Delgado is kept.

Hideki Matsui is the left-handed, Japanese counterpart of Moises Alou.

I don't think Omar is looking for improvement at 1B - if a LF is signed, Evans and Murphy would be comepting for 1B job. Evans is the RH power bat Mets needed and plays plus defense at 1B

Pretty remarkable how Delgado turned his season around, he looked washed up for about two months then turned it on. Anyone know what happened, what clicked for him? I think we can assume nowadays that chemicals aren't involved so how did an older player like Delgado get his swing back?

To me, the only way a Delgado trade makes sense is if Mark Teixeria is signing with the Mets. I don't see any other free agents that could be considered an upgrade, and I don't think it's a good use of the Mets farm system to trade for a First Baseman.
As for what I would want back for Delgado? I don't think the Mets are in a position to be trading for prospects when they have needs on the ML roster, a couple good bullpen arms that can face both lefties and righties, or a Starting Pitcher, or the 2B/LF we need depending on where we play Murphy. That would be what I'm looking for.
(And I don't have much interest in Matsui, at this point, he's a pure DH whose power numbers fell off last season. I think you're stuck with that deal, unless you're interested in Castillo, lol).

Hideki Matsui? No thanks I don't think we need another left handed batter in the lineup

Shocking! Of coarse they did, hes latin. Now go out and sign another latin in k-rod. Oh and Vasquez is available!

All right, the Mets might have a Latin bias but honestly this was a good call. They couldn't have found a better option at that price.

It really is an interesting topic. It is easier for me to say this now, because I thought the dude was shot in May, but Carlos finally got his wrists/hands healthy. He had wrist surgery after the 06 year, and also had his first child in the winter of 06. Coming into 07 he didn;'t look ready to play. His wrists weren't fully healed and he was dealing with his newborn baby. Around the second half, he picked it up a little bit, and hit some down the stretch. In the last series of the year, he got drilled by Dontrelle Willis and re-injured his hand/wrist area, and had another surgery in the winter of 07. Obviously the first couple of months he was awful. Sometime in late June though (Willie being gone didn't hurt Carlos' situation, thats for sure), Delgado just took off. For a big power guy like Ortiz or Delgado, their hands and wrists are extremely important to them. Ortiz didn;t look the same with his wrist injury either. The main difference was, I think, that Delgado got healthy, and began to trust his hands again. For the first half, he would start his swing early, trying to compensate for his slower batspeed because of his not 100 percent wrist. He would hit some fastballs, but he swung at every breaking ball that was thrown to him, being way out in front from starting his swing so early. Sometime in early July.late June, he began to trust his hands again, started to take more BB's, and stopped trying to get a head start on a pitcher by bringing his hands back prior to the pitch. He went from a guy who couldn't hit offspeeds pitches to a guy who was hitting them 450 feet with regularity. It was really was one of the most amazing turnarounds I have ever seen in a single season. If Delgado is 100 percent, there is no reason at all he can't post something close to a 900 OPS, if not better.

Tim, why don't you just ban this guy Clark? He never contributes anything. He comes into every single Mets thread and spews his anti latino crap all day. What does he add to the comment section? All the guy does is constantly stir up trouble.

An ignore button would also be awesome. I don't know if that is possible though. Especially during the off-season, a ton of morons come through here with no knowledge of baseball who just post crap and annoy the regular posters all the time. Which is not nearly as bad as logging in only because you are racist against latino's, and you want to bring it up in every Mets thread. I don't even think I ever see this guy anywhere else on your site, unless it is a Mets thread where he can go on his anti latino rants.

nrmx88,
here you go crying again b/c i pointed out how a GM is bias. Just get over it and move on. Im not attacking anyone, just using the comment boards for what they are meant to be used for...comments, opinions, and conversation. I make tons of comments and very few of them are releated to the Mets...now, please quit crying and move on.

I've actually come around on this...I heard Minaya contacted Fidel Castro about the 5th starter spot...
the latin bias thing is silly.

I dont think that's a good move for the Mets. Matsui is a very good Offensive Player but he is aging as well and is more of a DH. If he were right handed I would consider that typ of move but the fact that he is lefty really makes that a bad move for the Mets IMO.
Picking up Delgado's option was the right move. If you cant trade him then your going to have to rely on him to be a good offensive player and while I dont think he will match his 08 numbers he can still provide good offense and he will be playing for a new contract in 010 as well. If I were to trade Delgado though I would be looking for a power arm in the Bullpen.
