"SI.com's Jon Heyman talked to a "Dodgers-connected person" who believes Russell Martin was "just another catcher" this year"
Yeah I mean, every catcher can play great defense, post a .385 OBP and nearly steal 20 bases. I don't get how these guys get jobs in baseball.

If Martin is traded..The Dodgers would need some serious talkin to on how to run a team

"Dodgers-connected person". Assistant to the vice president of the Gary Bennett fan club?

I agree, saying that Martin is just another catcher is about as stupid a comment as I have heard in a while, and it makes no sense for the dodgers to trade away one of the best young talents they have.
Here is my question....Does anyone know anything about Iwase and what his arsenal consists of? I know that he has been mentioned before as a potential target to come over here, and my interest comes from the fact that frank wren made a trip over to japan this past summer. Also, the braves could use an addition to the bullpen, so my thinking was that he would be a target of the braves.

"Dodgers connected person"....
yea right.... I hate how the media blows things out of proportion...
Russel just got tired... simple as that...

The only way Russell Martin is "just another catcher" is when you compare him to Joe Mauer and Brian McCann.

Jon Heyman is a moron. He's been pushing this "the kids are immature" agenda for months now. It all seems to be from one source too.
Not once has he given specifics.

Is this Dodgers executive having his pink slip handed to him as we speak?
"Heyman named the Orioles as a potential Manny Ramirez suitor, but Roch Kubatko finds a signing highly unlikely."
Doesn't Roch Kubatko have to go become Pacman Jones' bodyguard/publicist, pass out business cards claiming to be John Kruk's personal trainer and hairstylist, and massage "whatever hurts" on Kellen Winslow Jr., along with a bunch of other stuff?
Yeah, he has some work to do.

Heyman is just a Yankee lover who has no idea about the rest of the league and whats going on. Besides that point, he changes his idea's and opinions everyday. The Mets have already had no shot, and were the favorite to sign Manny about 5 times each according to Jon Heyman. Blehh

That's my big issue with Heyman. Everyday the guy seems to come out with new info that contradicts reports he made two weeks before. Nobody jumps from bandwagon to bandwagon like Heyman

Russell Martin is "just another catcher" in the way Albert Pujols is a "slightly above average hitter."
Isn't Heyman the same guy who put Martin on the trading block before?
Perhaps the guy actually said that trading Martin would be "just another bad catcher trade" like the Piazza one 10 years ago.

Heyman is probably just pissed that Torre took the baby Dodgers further then the Yankees. One thing (among many things) I remember about Jon Heyman that pissed me off was a couple months back around the trade deadline, he was on his normal spot on WFAN with Mike Francessa and Mike asked him about any rumors involving the Mets. He mentioned a few relievers or whatever, and then responding to a question asking whether they were looking for COF help, Jon says I have heard they have inquired about Juan Rivera(this was when Rivera, in a small sample size of AB's was hitting in the .100's), and then sort of pokes fun at Minaya and Rivera, saying I really don't know how picking up a .184 hitter is going to help your team though, or something like that. You expect that from average fans and from stupid guys on local sports shows and stuff, but Heyman is supposed to be one of the top baseball writers there are, and to look past Rivera's upside and past history and just focus on the AB's he had in a small sample in 2008 pissed me off. Do the Dodgers have a minor league catcher that is hopelessly blocked by Martin? Maybe that was his source.

Nrm...in answer to your question, no, there is no true high-caliber catcher in our system like Martin is. We traded away a high-ceiling guy to Cleavland in the Casey Blake trade (Carlos Santana in single A, who led the minors in RBI's).
Now, our depth extends as far as A.J Ellis and Lucas May. May is decent, and one year younger than Martin, but isn't near Martin's level, or nearly ready to be an everyday starting catcher. He has some 15-25 power potential, but his career minor league BA is a mediocre .251 and he strikes out way more than he walks (146BB, 516K's in 2040 minor league AB's. A.J. has a better batting average, but has no real power upside (.374 career minor league slugging %). His only real upside is that he walks more than he strikes out (209BB, 204K's in 1179 AB's).
So the Dodgers really have no one to replace Martin if they trade him, and the free agent market is extremely thin at catcher. There are not any stand-out catchers. There are plenty of "has-beens" like Pudge, Michael Barrett, and Johnny Estrada, but beyond that are a bunch of old, super average, and backups.
So trading Martin would be the STUPIDEST move the Dodgers could make this off-season. Fortunately it is the inept writers at SI.com making these claims, not the Dodger front office. Why do you think Martin's name is circulating so much around trade rumors? Because everyone knows how good he is, and everyone knows he had a bit of a down year this year, and lots of people think that the Dodgers front office is dumb, and will trade him. Righhhhht...dream on folks, Martin is staying in LA.

after watching martin since he came up almost everyday, him being a 2 time all star, through his first 2 yrs, has a silver slugger and gold glove, while he could get another( not sure whos going to win nl C gold glove, my guess either soto, martin, or mccann) the only way he would get traded is if he brought another catcher better than him. as far as i see it, trades would be about even for mauer and soto, execept for the amont of time in the league

The Dodgers are not trading Martin.
