Would Edwin Encarnacion, Homer Bailey, and a low level B prospect be enough to get Cain from the Giants?
A Reds rotation that can pick 5 of Harang, Volquez, Cain, Cueto, Arroyo, and Owings would be very enticing.

I think it would take a bigger bat. A scout was saying Prince Fielder + prospects to offset the cost.

not even close they have a 3 baseman in their system, it would take joey votto or jay bruce and possible someone else for cain. that deal would be a pipe dream. if cain hit the market his bounty would very high

I actually really like the Jones for Castillo idea. Makes sense for both teams and Castillo has some value left as indicated by his OBP. Perhaps watching Furcal will wake him up. If he can return to half the player he once was, the Dodgers will have both insane speed and infield defense.
The economics match up really well. The total contract values are the same and the Mets are in a better position to swallow the bigger instant pill. Remember that each year, the money in relative terms to Castillo goes down in value.

I do to AA. I think Andruw would be a good bet even for a team like the Yankees. At worst, you eat a big chunk of money over a 1 year period. The upside is, Andruw regains some of his old form and gives you a .250/.325/.500 line and some good defense. I wouldn't mind Andruw on the Mets on a one year commitment. I like giving guys a second chance.

I think people seriously undervalue Cain.
Cain for Prince Fielder straight up is a horrible deal for the Giants. Cain is worth more than Fielder, hands down.
EE + Homer + low level prospect is also way too low for Cain. I don't see Cain and the Reds as a match, since both teams pretty much need the same thing: power.

I don't know about Furcal waking Castillo up, because Reyes certainly didn't, but I could see Luis doing much better in a more laid back L.A. Also, the warmer west coast climate will help his 60 year old knees. It was messed up. Luis came off the DL and he actually looked like he was 5 years younger. For like a week. Then I dont know what happened, but he was back to walking around like Kevin Spacey in The Usual Suspects. And not Keyser Soze, but Verbal Kint.

Lol. Jacobs was not going to get non-tendered. That's hilarious.
Posted by: firesticks | October 31, 2008 at 04:11 PM
Hey may or may not have been non-tendered. To dismiss it as if it completely absurd is hilarious. Here is a guy who was arb eligible, posted a OBP south of .300, and was probably in for a raise of 10 or 15x his current salary. He is very, very replacable for Fla, and Fla has always been very careful with their money, always having the smallest payroll in baseball. It really is not out of the realm of possibility Jacobs would have been non-tendered. They could have replaced his production pretty easily with Cantu.

I dont see the fish non-tendering because they always get value out of their assets

"I don't know about Furcal waking Castillo up, because Reyes certainly didn't, but I could see Luis doing much better in a more laid back L.A."
Furcal is far more of a fireplug that Reyes and plays the game all out, all the time. That is part of the reason he waited so long to come back. He didn't want to come back if it meant going 80%. Castillo can learn from that.

addymaster04-
Baldelli can't play CF.
And, the Washburn trade makes zero sense for the Mariners. Why would they dump salary just to take on more salary, since Matsui is owed more than Washburn is.

I think Colletti should look into swapping Jones for Castillo. I like that idea better because Jones has been a pain since he arrived in LA, and he obviously wants out.
Though Blake DeWitt has shown he is capable of playing 2B and 3B, many in the Dodgers front office, including Joe Torre, would much rather see him play at 3B (his natural position). Castillo, when healthy, is at the very least a very reliable #2 hitter. The only problem is that exactly: his health. I am hesitant to have a team that, while having tons of potential to be explosive, is so injury prone.
I have the distinct feeling the Dodgers will hotly pursue Ben Sheets, IF Manny isn't signed, and that, then IF Sabathia is signed. Putting your hopes in three players that have been injured riddled the past two years to fill the holes in your lineup isn't necessarily the solution I'm thrilled about.
I'd be interested to see the Dodgers ship Pierre to either the Chi Sox or Royals. Both teams could very much use a speedy leadoff batter. I know the Chi Sox are shipping Vazquez and I think he'd be a great addition to the Dodgers rotation. His numbers have tapered off a little bit, but I think if he returned to the NL West, he could easily be a 15 game winner with a 3.00-3.50 ERA. Plus, he WILL strike out a ton of batters, and eat innings, which is what I think the Dodgers could use. Given the youth (Billingsley and Kershaw, and potentially McDonald) and the fragility (Kuroda) of their rotation as it stands now.
I'm also interested to know if KC is planning on shopping any of their starters (namely Grenkie).

Does anyone think that the Mets could ship Delgado and others (minor leaguers/picks)to the Giants for Cain?
I wouldn't trade Castillo for Jones. Jones is a bit of a head case and has been almost invisible for the Dodgers. We know about his potential but that doesn't win ballgames. Also, would he be willing to play left field?

GOing to throw this out there: kind of far fetched but:
Shealy for Jonathan Sanchez?
or would the Giants need Butler? Cause that woudl seem like too much.

For the Cain speculators that have not seen the Giants much in the last couple years or so. ( Not that I blame you. Even for a Giants fan they have been brutal 3 out of 5 games and usually hart breaking 1 of those other 2 games) Just ask yourself this. Could this package be tempting for Lester? Would it tempt a trade for Joba? If it can’t pass that test it just isn’t legit begin considering.
Basicslop : Shealy could be interest to the Giants fans. Will he even be on Royals 40 man Nov 21st? He does nothing for the left side of the infield and an age 30 first baseman that has not played the field over 500 innings in a given year will not pry much out of the Giants. Maybe Eric Thrrets? A hard throwing lefty reliever that has had control issues. He has 7 years of minor league experience at age 27 next year and he to may, or may not, be on the 40 man Nov 21st.
Even if Sanchez can’t gain enough stamina to be a starter he still has the arm to be a exceptional bull pen man. The Giants don’t have many pieces to swap for useful left side spots and are bit soft for starters in the 4-7 spots for next year so they would be looking for some thing a bit more certain for plugging an area of need before weakening the bottom of the rotation farther for ‘09.

as the white sox are loaded w/lefty starters (beuhrle, danks, richard) could a aaron poreda + josh fields package get cain? they could use javy vasquez to the orioles in a contract for contract for melvin mora.
