Padres Rumors: Greene, Team Needs

New Padres articles over at the San Diego Union-Tribune and MLB.com...

  • The Padres filed a grievance against Khalil Greene based on his self-inflicted broken hand bone.  They may seek to recover over $1MM.  The Padres must be really tight on cash, as I've never heard of a team doing this (especially against a player under contract).  Greene is owed $6.5MM in '09.
  • GM Kevin Towers admitted payroll may be lower than $58MM in 2009.  Towers will surf the trade market for a veteran backup catcher and perhaps a reliever.

This right here tells me that everyone should get on the phones and see how much they can underpay for Peavy...

Obviously this team is really REALLY strapped for cash!

I understand that the reason the Pads do this is because they are wanting to save back some money (this divorce thing is probably gonna get them sold!) -- but i think every team should do this to players who do stupid things to force them to miss time. IE: Jeff Kent and his motorcycle, any one of a hundred pitchers who punch a wall and break their hand.

I woke up this morning and Ray Kroc owns the Padres again?
I can’t tell how sad that makes me. And I am Giants fan.

Agree with CyCub, but it might be a bad move for a player that suffered through such a bad stretch. Just looks really D**chy if you ask me. I agree with the principle but I don't know if this is the best example to make out of it.

Peavy would cost a scary amount for any team, regardless of money.

As for Greene, I think the Orioles would make a ton of sense for him. He's going to cost some $5M so the Padres likely won't be terribly interested in paying him. If they could move Greene to Baltimore, who needs a stopgap shortstop, for some young players that could make sense. Obviously San Diego would need to find a replacement, even if its short term. Another name to throw out there for both teams would be Ronny Cedeno, he'd come cheap and would be a solid defensive shortstop that could post a .280/.320/.400ish line.

Khalil Greene for Ramon Hernandez! I realize the Padres are attempting to shed salary, but it's near-equal value at 1yr/$6.5MM. It also goes in line with Towers using the trade market for a veteran back-up.

After that, he should attempt to pull off Kevin Kouzmanoff for Erick Aybar or Brandon Wood; maybe use a reliever in the mold of Justin Hampson to help LA ignore Kouz' .299 OBP.

They shouldnt file a greivance.hes still bettern than everyone but gonzales even w/ a broken hand

Greene to Pittsburgh for Ronny Paulino and a lower-level pitching prospect. Khalil was born in Butler County, about 30 minutes from Pittsburgh. And this makes even more sense once the Pirates trade Jack Wilson this winter and have on internal option to replace him.

Wow, this sounds really petty. Perhaps Greene should counter sue on a premises liability issue or something just to piss them off?

"After that, he should attempt to pull off Kevin Kouzmanoff for Erick Aybar or Brandon Wood; maybe use a reliever in the mold of Justin Hampson to help LA ignore Kouz' .299 OBP."

I doubt he could get either of those guys for Kouz, especially since Scioscia has already stated that he wants Chone Figgins to play 3B full time next year, and I don't think it is a stretch to say that he has the power to affect any more Reagins trys to make. That said, if any team can harness Kouzmanoff's potential, it is probably the Angels and Mickey Hatcher. They seem to have a soft spot for free swingers.

"Wow, this sounds really petty."

Why? Alderson seemed to make a lot of sense in the article:

“In a specific sense, it's about recovering payment for services not rendered based on contract language that legally supports our position. In the larger sense, it's about deterring this kind of conduct in the future because the consequences can be critical to a team."

Khalil's the one who acted petty after throwing a clubhouse tempter tantrum, which could have been avoided if he didn't strike out so much.

And what does "it is a stretch to say that he has the power to affect any more Reagins trys to make" mean?

Since it seems like the Padre's are being really cheap, why don't a team like the Blue Jays just trade Curtis Thigpen and $5M for Greene?

Send Peavy to the Reds for Homer Bailey, Drew Stubbs, Devin Masoraco, Juan Francisco, and Chris Valika. Maybe thrown in a PTBNL. But to me on paper that deal looks good. Better then Bedard by far. Maybe as insurance you take out Valika and add Matt Maloney just because Bailey's struggles. But whatever. It's still a good deal for both sides as far a I can see.

When are teams going to learn to pad the walls and storage cabinets to avoid these "self-inflicted" injuries? Recalling JD Drew injuring his head on the roof of a dugout, maybe teams should just pad everything....walls, roofs, lockers, gatorade coolers, laundry hampers, bat racks, helmets...

And since Carlos Quentin hurt his hand punching his bat, pad those too.

"Khalil's the one who acted petty after throwing a clubhouse tempter tantrum, which could have been avoided if he didn't strike out so much."

This is done by players all the time. Baseball needs to be consistent about such things.

"And what does "it is a stretch to say that he has the power to affect any more Reagins trys to make" mean?"

More = Move, sorry for the typo on that and on "trys" which was obviously "tries".

Re-read in that context.

hmmmm. Padres paring payroll. need backup catcher?? How bout a carlos Ruiz for Jake Peavy swap? lmao, jk!!!

These kinds of greivances happen every now and then in special circumstances. The Os did it to Sidney Ponson when they claimed his DUI charges were a symptom of a drinking problem which was self-inflicted and kept him from honoring his contract. I think it's a franchise's way of sending a message as a last resort, trying to get the player to wake up and act professional.

In both cases the possible recovery of $ was minimal. It's less to do with money and more to do with sending a message and drawing a line in the sand.

"In both cases the possible recovery of $ was minimal. It's less to do with money and more to do with sending a message and drawing a line in the sand."

Given how cheap the Padres are, I think this is about the money.

Alcoholism is a recognized disability, and they could get in big trouble for trying to fine him because of it.
