Let's take a look at the latest column from Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News.
- Rockies "closer of the future" Casey Weathers will miss the '09 season due to elbow surgery. However, the Rox are still not likely to re-sign Brian Fuentes. Joel Sherman expects Fuentes to sign for three years, $36-39MM. Brad Lidge signed for three years, $37.5MM in July, but that was not on the open market. The Mets will be in on Fuentes.
- The Rockies are expected to trade one of Garrett Atkins or Matt Holliday this winter. The Phillies will inquire on both (they tried to acquire Holliday this summer). Ringolsby says the Red Sox have discussed Holliday internally and considers the Angels a match for Atkins. The Red Sox, however, are set at the corners with Jason Bay and J.D. Drew.
- Brothers Jayson and Laynce Nix are both free agents. Jayson, 26, hit .303/.373/.591 in Triple A. Laynce, 28, hit .284/.348/.539. Jayson plays second base, Laynce plays outfield.
I'm not trying to be annoying by saying this, but it may come across as such. I think you meant '09 for Weathers.

phils would be even better if they get holliday

Isn't Laynce Nix the guy who used to play CF for the Rangers? Yanks should look at both of the guys. Laynce played a good CF, they would come up cheap and they are not that old.

It's a long shot, but Peavy to the Angles and than Atkins for Saunders would be a huge boost for Colorado. They get the pitcher they need, they save money, and Peavy leaves the NL west.

If Atkins is available, look for the Brewers to show interest. They are in desperate need for some production at 3B and they don't have a viable internal solution.

Atkins for Saunders? No. As much as I'd love to see that deal go down, it probably won't happen. Atkins + top prospects for Saunders, maybe. Greg Reynolds factor into this maybe?
I thought Peavy wanted to stay in the NL. Maybe if the Angels got CC, one of Saunders/Santana could be on the chopping block.
Laynce was the Rangers guy, I'm pretty sure. Jayson was the guy who got hurt in the Olympics for Team USA.

Atkins for Saunders is about equal value, though i'd stay away from it for both teams, but especially for the Angels. Atkins has a good bat and while being away from Coors will hurt it won't negate it completely the real problem is Atkins defense. He is one of the worst defensive 3B in the league much better suited for 1B or DH.

If you read the original column, it suggests that Atkins for Saunders only became a possibility if the Angels were to aquire CC Sabathia. If not, they would likely hang onto the pitching they have.

Atkins is far from the worst defensive 3B. His .964 Fielding% would put him at least average if not a shade above average. What he lacks in range he makes up for in consistency. Also, he was much better this year. if anything, he is one of the worst defensive 1B in the league.

Brian Fuentes for $12-$13 million a year? This is getting ridiculous!

I am REALLY against Atkins as a white sox fan. his d SUCKS and he sucks away from coors.

There is ZERO chance that Santana is traded from the Angels unless its for a bonafide ace.

Atkins for Saunders? Umm ... no. That would be an awful trade for the Angels.
It's been covered again and again but Atkins is largely a product of Coors field. Outside of Coors he becomes completely average. Call me crazy, but a young lefty starter (pre-arb) with an ERA around 3.50 is worth a heck of a lot more than a league average 3B that is set to start making big bucks. There's also that small matter of the Angels displacing their lead-off hitter and having no place for Chone Figgins.
The Fuentes price tag is exactly what I predicted. The difference in dollars between K-Rod and Fuentes will be about $2m/year. That becomes a no-brainer. K-Rod is absolutely the better deal if the gap is that close.

"Brian Fuentes for $12-$13 million a year? This is getting ridiculous!"
Fuentes' salary will depend heavily on K-Rod's. If K-Rod gets 15MM/yr, Fuentes could see 12. If K-Rod gets somewhere in the 12 range, Fuentes probably sees 10.
