« Andruw Wants To Return To Atlanta | Main | Options Declined: Taguchi, Gordon, Counsell, Embree »
George King and Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reported today that the Yankees plan to offer arbitration to right fielder Bobby Abreu. It's an obvious decision, since the Yankees either get him on a one-year deal or get two draft picks when he signs elsewhere. Abreu has said he's looking for a three-year deal, but prefers the Yankees. The authors suggest the Mets could be a fit.

I don't see him signing with the Mets at all.

I don't see him with the Mets either, unless they trade Church in a deal for a closer.

He'll probably end up with the Braves.

He makes total sense for the Mets. Yeah, he is afraid of walls, but he can still throw and is no slouch in the box. Tatis, Beltran and Abreu can be a very productive OF.

addymaster...matsui alone for jarrod washburn is extreme overpaying. If he gets dealt, it'll be for a first baseman, be realistic, the Yankees cannot sign tex, cc and baldelli, while resigning moose(who may retire) and abreu. It simply costs way to much money. Plus, the Yankees have probably lost any interest they had in Washburn.

Abreu on the Mets would be a nightmare. Just another guy who puts up numbers but has zero heart. We need scrappy players, guys that can light a fire under the team; certainly not the corner outfielder version of Carlos Beltran. Please. How about Hudson, Cruz, guys like that? Not a chance. The Mets are rolling (or limping) to a third-place finish. I'm so sick of this team and the attitude. Of course I'll still root, but come on.

Abreu is not a good fit at all. They need a right handed power bat in the middle of that lineup. Not another lefty.
Posted by: metsfan99 | October 31, 2008 at 09:45 PM
Abreu seems a much better fit for the Cubs than the Mets, just my opinion.
Anybody know the likelihood that he will accept arbitration? Not that it really concerns the Yankees, since in this case it's basically a win-win unless they make a big move for like Manny or somebody and end up overloading on OF (hey, look, yet another reason not to sign Manny!). Abreu may not be the most enthusiastic RF, but he's a productive hitter for sure and will slot into the Yankees' lineup just fine if he accepts arbitration. If not, thanks for the memories and the draft picks. Hopefully Cashman is planning on not having him and will treat his accepting arbitration as a nice bonus.

"certainly not the corner outfielder version of Carlos Beltran"
WTF you do realize Beltran is one of the best outfielders in baseball, certainly the best all around player on the Mets. I would kill to have 3 Beltrans in the outfield.
Even more alarming then the idea that you wouldnt want another Beltran, is your comparison of him to Bobby Abreu. Theyre stats are similar, except Beltran has a higher OBP (Abreu's calling card) more power, and plays phenomenal defense.
I swear the lack of love for Carlos Beltran is absolutely insane in Queens.
P.S. AND he did it with the black hole known as the bottom of the Mets offense batting behind him. Abreu had ****ing A-Rod protecting him.

Beltran is a great player. I would kill to have to more of him in the OF.
If i'm the Mets like I have said i'm going after Holliday. A core of Beltran, Holliday, Reyes, and Wright would be very good for a long time if they could resign Holliday and if they want him bad enough that shouldnt be a problem.
The Phills are WS Champs now. Its time for the Mets to do something big again. They have collapsed in Spetember two years in a row. It's time to end that.

"He makes total sense for the Mets. Yeah, he is afraid of walls, but he can still throw and is no slouch in the box. Tatis, Beltran and Abreu can be a very productive OF."
I agree Abreu is a nice addition but he would just be another left handed hitter in a left hand heavy lineup.Church, Delgado, Schneider,Abreu and Murphy(if he plays second) is a lot of lefties for one lineup. Also Tatis won't start or for that matter even platoon in the OF.

"If i'm the Mets like I have said i'm going after Holliday"
I only go after Holliday If I could sign him right away (similar to the Johan situation last year). Otherwise I dont wan't a rent a player that sacrifices the little remaining prospects the Mets have.
I'm also tired of the Mets collapses but you have to realize the Mets were one game away from playoff baseball with no real lf, no closer, Maine out for the year and still dominated the phillies throughout the year. I still think the phillies have the talent and toughness the Mets lack. I'd kill for Victorino or Werth for that matter.

Abreu should stay with the Yankees.
Posted by: YankeeFan4life | November 01, 2008 at 10:03 AM
I am tired of the mets losing when they should be the best team in baseball, they need right now to make the deals that will put them over the top one deal is to get Chase Utley and the other is to get Matt Holliday. the nest thing is to get two quality starters who can win for them. Cliff Lee is one of them, and brandon webb is another one, we have enough players to make these deeds, and then we can then from that point make deals for relief pitching, which is needed. also bring up Gary Carter and make him one of your coaches, stop having excuses for not having this man on the team.

No way the phillies are trading Utley, especially to the Mets. The Mets have enough players but that doesn't mean any of them are going anywhere. The Dbacks aren't trading Webb (possibly the best pitcher in the nl). The truth is the Mets don't have the prospects it takes to trade to get these players. Unless you want Reyes or Wright out in which case you would have to replace them. Also wouldn't you like to see players like Murphy and FMart develop on our team instead of someone elses. It pains me to watch Kazmir pitch and know that he could be pitching for us.
Posted by: shaddix | November 01, 2008 at 10:31 AM
Wtf, why would the Yankees trade for Washburn, especially Matsui? The only reason they wanted him last year was because they had no other options, and needed someone for the remainder of the season. He is NOT an option. He is horrible. It would have been a salary dump for the M's when the Yankees tried to get him.
Posted by: letsgoyankees | November 01, 2008 at 10:34 AM
There is no way the yanks get tex, cc and burnett. Believe it or not there are other teams that will try to bid on these guys and not everyone wants to play for the yanks. I do see sabathia with the yanks, but i think tex stays with the angels.
Posted by: shaddix | November 01, 2008 at 12:28 PM
I know Carlos Beltran is a better player than Bobby Abreu. It's just obvious to me that Beltran has no heart, and is purely a stathog with no true desire to win. Abreu fits that persona. Please, no Bobby for me.
I'm only against trading Beltran because there's no one else to play center. Why not trade Delgado (and a guy like Niese or Kunz) to the Royals for Soria and Greinke? Then sign Tex, and you're ready to go.
Posted by: metsobsessed | November 01, 2008 at 01:21 PM
There is no trading Beltran because he has a no trade clause in his contract regardless. I agree with moving Delgado but I don't think he's a good fit for KC. Maybe a Delgado for BJ Ryan deal. Toronto needs power and the Mets need a closer. Murphy plays first and u just find a bat to replace Delgado's(Ibanez/Burell/Ramirez).

Beltran has no heart? Let's see. A few years ago he went all out after a ball and had that horrible collision with Cameron. This year, or maybe it was last year, he crashes into a wall and bangs up his knee. In both instances, he comes back and gives his best eventhough he is not 100%. There are different ways to lead. He does it quietly. Someone with no heart doesn't even try to catch those two balls that lead to him still not being 100%.
Posted by: surdo | November 02, 2008 at 04:59 AM
I'm usually one to respect other people's opinions, but there is no way I can be nice right now. If you think Beltran has no heart, you are an idiot. Seriously, what is that claim based on? Is it because he doesn't furrow his eyebrows and bare his teeth while in the outfield? Because if that's the case then you have no case. I watched probably 95% of the games this past season, and I witnessed him make sliding, colliding, and over-the-wall catches. I never saw him do ANYTHING but hustle. He also hit the only RBI's in the final game at Shea when he hit his two run homer. So if the only you have to go by to support your claim is his calm demeanor and his streaky hitting, shut up and stop mocking my core based on absolutely baseless claims.
