A.J. Burnett Opts Out

4:28pm: According to Ken Rosenthal, Burnett has officially opted out of the remaining two years and $24MM on his deal.  The Blue Jays remain in the mix.  If he leaves, they'll at least end up with two draft picks.

10:22am: What's the deal with A.J. Burnett?  We were supposed to have an opt-out decision yesterday before the GM meetings began.  Ken Davidoff talked to Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker.  Apparently Braunecker will meet with the Jays today to see if they'll make a "knock your socks off" offer to keep Burnett off the market.  Cathal Kelly of the Toronto Star says the Jays will have to look at other free agent starters if Burnett leaves.

Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald does not see the Red Sox in on Burnett or C.C. Sabathia, based on Theo Epstein's comments.  The Yankees are expected to be major players.

Ya its been weird. Ive heard nothing up here in Canada. So maybe just maybe Burnett is staying with Toronto

Someone from Burnett's side said the report that he'd make a decision by Monday was bogus.

Yea herd that to any way if the jays offered him 2 more years and 32m on top of what they already owe him will he stay????

Well... I'd guess the Yankees are the favorites to land him now.

The Jays don't want him to stay. If he does, they have no financial flexibility to pick up some hitting, and are going to be left with the same crappy offense in 2009 that they had in 2008. Plus, extending him is a bad idea, because they really only need him this year. By 2010 Marcum and McGowan will presumably be fully healthy, joining Halladay and Litsch as anchors for a rotation that sees no less then Casey Janssen, Brett Cecil, Brad Mills, Ricky Romero, Scott Richmond, and Mark Rzepcynski as other candidates to start.

It was nice to know you Burnett, you were worth the 3/33, but nobody will hate to see you go. The Jays will now have approx. 20m to spend on a SP (likely a guy like Pedro, Penny, Pavano...) and a DH (Bradley, Giambi, Ibanez...)

give Benjie 3 yrs instead!!! probably won't happen, but rather not give Allan James 4+1; just preference really.

are the sox still in the race to get him we need a pitcher

The Orioles will be the frontrunners as he's told Oriole players and other people close to him that he sees himself with the Orioles next season...

I don't care if the Braves get Peavy or not, Wren has to atleast make an offer to Burnett. David O'Brien of the AJC says he'll be looking for a contract in the 4yrs/$72 million range. I say make the extra push and offer him 4yrs/$75 million.

Burnett only pitches well when he's pitching for a contract. If I were signing him I'd like an opt-out clause every year.

4/75 is a lot of money for a pitcher who will give you 150 innings with an ERA in the high 3's.

4/75 is waaaaaaaaay too much money for a pitcher like Burnett....the 3 years hes been with the jays he's had 38 wins and 28 losses. His ERA has been in the 4-4.50 range with 1 shut out and only 5 complete games....if you give burnett 4/75 than imagine how much the Jays would have to pay Holliday to make him stay....I personally dont thing Burnett is worth it for more than 10 million a year but thats just me....if you are gonna spend 4/75 why dont they go for a CC or some one else who is a for sure thing....
