« Cubs Rumors: Ibanez, Abreu, Teahen | Main | Padres Rumors: Greene, Peavy »
MLB.com's Nick Zaccardi talked to Dave Ross' agent Ryan Gleichowski, who said the Astros are one of at least seven teams to express interest in his client. The interest is mutual. Ross, 32 in March, hit .225/.369/.352 in 182 plate appearances for the Reds and Red Sox. He showed big-time power in 2006, but not much since.
Zaccardi also talked to Barry Meister, who represents Paul Bako. The Louisiana native would be interested in playing for the Astros, but Meister wouldn't say whether the Astros have been in touch.

Ross or Bako may not be a bad idea for a couple years until Castro is ready to take over long term...

Man that would put the stros with a slew of .220 hitting catchers!

Solid signing. One of the more underrated catchers out there.

Well would be a solid signing rather. :)

Again, why are the Astros wasting money on FA catchers? Give Quintero the job, and spend that money on AT LEAST one type A and one type B.
What happened to the "if we can sign two FA Starting Pitchers, we'll be instant contenders" mindset? Every week they scale back their starting pitcher plans. Come on, Wade, is Wandy your answer for #2 behind Oswalt? Maybe you can sign Mark Loretta to the ultimate utility-man contract and have him in the starting rotation as your #5. After all, he does have 1IP in his career (with the Brewers).
Ed, tell Drayton McMoney-pants that you need to stretch the pockets a little this year, and go for broke.
Failures...

Hey Red, just because your team finished above the pirates doesn't mean you can start name calling. Heres hoping you guys can finish above .500 next year--

Caltx,
I'm an Astros fan - die hard, even (I'm naming my first born child after Nolan Ryan) - so I can demean them as I see fit; especially when they're beginning to cower from the FA Starting Pitcher race. There was so much promise and hope that if they could sign a type A guy and a type B to go behind Oswalt, they’d be set in ’09. Plus, if Paulino could be healthy and maybe make a mid-season emergence, you’d have to feel good about our chances.
But every time I read Ed Wade’s comments, that promise diminishes more and more. Why are they so focused on signing a veteran catcher with such a deep FA Starting Pitcher pool? Q will do just fine…
By the way, you wouldn't happen to be from Calallen, TX, would you?

PS: I was assuming you thought I am a Reds fan. Right?

Ross is a solid #2 for a team. I kind of wish Boston would have approached him instead of dave cash, then Wake prefers cash as his personal catcher and Ross may not be up to #1 duties anymore, but Ross does have a good glove and a + arm and has shown power in the past. The few at bats he had with Boston i saw his bat looked awfully slow and his judgement was off, then that could have been rust from sitting so long between his games played also.
Do not think a team can go wrong with this guy, he seems superior to guys like De Luca for certain and probably lots cheaper.
